SAMPLE DESIGN
INTRODUCTION
●
The sample design is about a 5 storey commercial building
in which the water supply for the water closet will be
relined to supply non potable water stored in the cistern.
Roof Deck area is 250.75m2 there are 3 occupants per unit
●
The design approach will be as follows:
– Determine the size of the horizontal rainwater pipes
using the tables from the plumbing code
– Determine the size of the cistern tank
– Determine the pump capacity
– Determine the size of the riser pipe

DEMAND
DETERMINATION
●
The monthly demand for water closet use only is given
as follows
RAINFALL DATA
TREATMENT
●
The process starts with determining the rainfall. Since
the project site is in manila, the following monthly
rainfall are obtained
RAINFALL DATA
TREATMENT
●
Adjust the data for the months having the following
rainfall data of -1 and -2.
●
Traced and missing data are technically given a value of
0 for single station analysis.
●
If data for surrounding stations are available and it
shares the same corona climate classification, the
missing monthly data can be obtained using the inverse
distance method formula

TREATMENT
●
Take the average and the median values of the monthly
rainfall
CALCULATIONS USING
MONTHLY MEDIAN DATA
● Using the median value of 9.80mm of rain for January
in Manila Port Area, the number of liters of rainwater
that can be expected to be stored in January from a
250.75-square-meter roof assuming 75% collection
efficiency is determined from the equation:
Rainfall (mm) x roof area x 9.92 Li/m2/10mm. rain x
collection efficiency
9.8mm * 250.75 m2 * 9.92 li/m2/10mm * 0.75
= 1828.27 liters
● The monthly data
WATER BALANCE
●
The water balance for the system will be tabulated as
follows
STORAGE SIZING
●
From the given water balance as well as the site
development plan, a tentative storage sizing can
already be made.
●
From the site development layout the following area
can be effectively utilized for cistern as follows
●
It must be noted that the depth D can still vary
depending on the soil and structural conditions of the
building
STORAGE SIZING
5m x 4.0m x d
STORAGE SIZING
●
From the initial water balance method that were
obtained, a size of 60000 liter for the rainwater
cistern is possible.
●
In the previous assessment, a size of 60,300 liter is
already possible which results in 6 months of
negative water supply in which the balance can
be obtained from water utilities
PIPE SIZING
●
For a dual pipe system that isolates the rainwater from
potable water system, the pipe sizing can be made in
accordance to the principles set by the plumbing code
●
The plumbing code recognized three methods in pipe
sizing:
1. By Table
2. By Chart
3. Hydraulic Calculations
●
This example will use tables
PIPE LAYOUT
●
In laying out the pipe, the shortest
possible path that will result in the
minimum amount of pipe fitting
that will be required is considered
to be the perfect arrangement
WATER SUPPLY FIXTURE
UNITS
●
Fixture unit is defined as an arbitrary
quantity in terms of which the load
producing effects or water requirements
on the plumbing system of different kinds
of plumbing fixtures are expressed in
some arbitrarily chosen scale.
●
Load Producing effects means the
amount of water released into the
drainage and waste system
●
Water requirement denotes the amount
of water needed by a particular fixture.
WATER SUPPLY FIXTURE UNITS
●
The code has given a value of
fixture units for a particular fixture
and these are listed as follows:
WATER SUPPLY FIXTURE UNITS
WATER SUPPLY FIXTURE UNITS
WATER SUPPLY FIXTURE UNITS
Problem 1
For the attached plans given,
determine the water supply fixture
unit at the 4th floor of the building
WATER SUPPLY FIXTURE UNITS
Solutions:
From table 6-5 (1999 RNPC) the
following are listed:
WC = 3wsfu
SH = 2wsfu
LAV = 1wsfu
HB = 2wsfu
KS = 2wsfu
WATER SUPPLY FIXTURE UNITS
Solutions:
WC = 3wsfu
SH = 2wsfu
LAV = 1wsfu
HB = 2wsfu
KS = 2wsfu
Total WSFU per room = 11wsfu
Total WSFU for 4th floor
= 15 x 11 = 165wsfu
WATER SUPPLY FIXTURE UNITS
Problem 2
For a public CR having the
following fixtures:
– 4 WC (flush valves)
– 3 urinals (wall mounted, integral trap,
trap arm only
– 3 lavatories (in set)
Determine the total water supply
fixture units
WATER SUPPLY FIXTURE UNITS
Solutions:
From table 6-4
Water closets and
4WC = 105WSFU urinals are operated
by using flushometer
3UR = 45WSFU valves
D =19mm
D =25mm
SAMPLE PROBLEM
For a two storey house with a roof
footprint of 125m2. Determine the
amount of storage to be used in
storing the rainwater as well as the
size of the distribution pipes. The
site is in Iloilo city. It is assumed that
the house has 5 occupants
use 80% efficiency
SAMPLE PROBLEM
Fixture present are as follows:
1 – WC – 6 li/flush 6 flush/pax
1 – KS – 8.316 li/min 5min/pax
1 – LAV - 8.316 li/min 5min/pax
1 – SH - 8.316 li/min 5min/pax
1 – HB - 8.316 li/min 5min/pax
