ENERGY USE AND

CONSERVATION
Prepared by: Mary Joy F. Falceso, LPT
ENERGY
Energy can neither be
created nor it can be
destroyed. It can only be
converted from one form
to another.
HOW DO WE USE ENERGY?

28% Transportation

19% Commercial

22% Industrial

31% Residential
TYPES OF ENERGY

RENEWABLE NON-RENEWABLE

1. Petroleum
1. Solar
products ( kerosene,
2. Wind petrol, diesel, etc )

3. Geothermal 2. Coal
3. Nuclear
4. Hydro
4. Natural Gas
5. Biomass
SOLAR ENERGY
Solar energy is any type
of energy generated by
the sun.
Advantages : Disadvantage :
• Solar energy doesn’t • It is not constant
produce CO2
• It has minimal impact on
environment.
WIND ENERGY
Wind energy generated by wind
turbines is mainly used to generate
electricity.

Advantages : Disadvantages:
• Wind turbines Installation and maintenance

Geothermal energy is heat
from within the Earth. We
can recover this heat as
steam or hot water and use
it to heat buildings or
generate electricity.

Advantages : Disadvantages :
• Carbon dioxide emission • Installation cost is very

Hydro Energy
Hydro energy is generally generated from running water
using various mechanical methods.
Hydro Energy

Advantages:
• Produces very less
amount of carbon
dioxide.
• It is also being used Disadvantages:
to control flood and for • Natural environment is
irrigation purposes. destroyed.
Biomass Energy
Biomass is organic material
made from plants and animals
waste. (microorganisms).
Advantages :
• Equipment (biogas plant)
installation cost is less.
• Helps in garbage reduction.
Disadvantages :
• Releases high amount of
sulfurous gases.
NON-RENEWABLE
ENERGY
Non- renewable energy can’t
be generated again and
again from the same source.
COAL
Coal is a combustible black or
brownish-black sedimentary rock
composed mostly of carbon and
hydrocarbons.

Disadvantage :
• Responsible for 57% of
carbon dioxide in
the air.
NUCLEAR ENERGY
Nuclear energy is energy in the
nucleus (core) of a uranium-235
atom. Atoms are tiny particles
that make up every object in
the universe.

Advantages : Disadvantages :
• Even a small amount can release • After using it in nuclear
enough energy to light-up thousand of reactor then also its
energy for months. (1 kg uranium-235 radioactive substances are
corresponds to 2.7 million kg coal very dangerous for human .
equivalent.)
NATURAL GAS
Natural gas is a fossil
fuel energy source. Natural
gas contains many different
compounds. The largest
component of natural gas is
methane.
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

• Natural gas is less • It is dangerous in case

expensive than of irresponsible use
other fossil fuels. • It pollutes the
• Natural gas is the environment
most
environmentally
friendly fossil fuel
because it burns
cleaner

WHY DO WE NEED TO CONSERVE
ENERGY
✓ We have limited fuels available on
earth.
✓ Our demand for energy is
increasing day-by-day.
✓ It is possible that someday, most
of fuels will be exhausted , and we
will have to switch to alternative
energy
DATA RELATED TO ENERGY CONSUMPTION IN
THE PHILIPPINES
• The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act ((Republic Act No.
11285) is to institutionalize energy efficiency and conservation,
enhance the efficient use of energy, and grant incentives to
energy efficiency and conservation projects.
• This act makes it mandatory for energy-intensive industries to
obtain certification. Their "energy audit" was performed by an
energy auditor.
• The Department through its Fuels and Appliance Testing
Laboratory implements the energy labeling and undertakes energy
performance testing and certification of specific household
appliances and energy equipment in the implementation of the
energy standards and labeling program.
ENERGY
CONSERVATION
Energy conservation is any
behavior that results in the use
of less energy.
