TEACHING can bring about something great if right ideas and beliefs are
implemented in the classroom. In many cases, the true purpose of teaching is not
actually to teach students how to memorize facts, but to lead students to understand
and apply the concepts being presented.

In order to deliver the lessons in Araling Panlipunan effectively, there are

principles that the teacher should consider in choosing and deciding what strategy,
method and approach best suit the lesson and the learners as well. These principles are
ideas that influence the teacher when making a decision or considering on this matter.

ACTIVITY #1:

Let’s Do This!

Recall your old days during Elementary and High School days. Then, do the
following as you recall those days:

1. Draw an emoticon that would describe your thoughts about your Araling
Panlipunan subject (Elementary/High School). Why did you choose to draw such
emoticon?

2. Think of ONE WORD that best describes your experience in your Araling
Panlipunan subject during your Elementary and High School days. Why?

3. Draw an object that would represent your feelings towards the subject when you
are still in Elementary and High School.

Effective teaching of Araling Panlipunan is characterized as Meaningful,

Integrative, Value – based, Challenging and Active GUIDING PRINCIPLES.

Guiding Principles in Teaching Araling Panlipunan

1. Meaningful
 Students MUST see the relevance and connection of their lesson to their lives.
 Students are challenged to use disciplined inquiry or use high order thinking skills
to construct meaning.
 Authentic Learning builds the concept of “learning by doing” to increase student’s
engagement.

2. Integrative
It is multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary in nature.
Integrates the totality of human experience over time and space.
Connecting the past, linking to the present, and looking ahead to the future.
It must be sensitive to and integrates multiple intelligences and learning styles of
the students.
Integrates cognitive skills required in other disciplines.
It also integrates effective use of technology, communication and reading/writing
skills that add important dimensions to students’ Learning.
3. Value-based
A powerful and effective AP teaching is value driven.
Students learn democracy by experiencing democracy right there in the
classroom.
Its lessons are replete with value-laden concerns and issues where students
listen to competing arguments.
Adding emotional touch to AP teaching is also affective-based teaching.
“Let us add an emotional touch to learning. Without the emotional dimension, our
subject matter will remain cold and lifeless.” (Corpus and Salandanan 2013)
The values embodied in a democratic form of Government should be practiced in
AP classroom practice.
o Commitment to justice
o Equality
o Respect for human dignity
o Freedom of thought and speech

4. Active
It requires students to process and think about what they are learning.
Active learning is "hands-on-minds-on-hearts-on".
Students work individually or collaboratively.
Students interact teachers by asking and answering questions as teachers
explain.
Students also interact with learning materials.

5. Challenging
Learning task should neither be too easy to bore the students nor too difficult to
discourage them.

ACTIVITY # 2:

1. Is Araling Panlipunan one of your favorite subjects during your Elementary and High
School? Yes or No. Why?

2. How would you like Araling Panlipunan was taught to you during those days.
