What is

Grade Point Average (GPA)?

Your GPA, or Grade Point Average, is the average of
all of your final grades at the end of the year. It is
calculated by multiplying the # of credits in a course by the
grade value of the course.

Each letter grade is assigned a value. All regular classes (CP, Regular,
Fundamentals) are considered non-weighted. Honors and AP courses are
assigned a greater value called a “weighted” value, due to the additional rigor
and requirements of those courses.
Nonweighted Weighted
A=4 A= 5
B+ = 3.5 B+ = 4.5
B=3 B=4
C+ = 2.5 C+ = 3.5
C=2 C=3
D+ = 1.5 D+ = 1.5
D=1 D=1
F=0 F=0
The grade value of the letter grade is multiplied by the # of credits in the course.
This total is called MARK POINTS/QUALITY POINTS.

Nonweighted Grade Grade X Credits = Mark

Course Value Points
English 9 B 3 X 5 = 15

Weighted Grade Grade X Credits = Mark

Course Value Points
English 9 B 4 X 5 = 20
Honors

The total mark points from all of your courses are then divided by the # of credits taken during
the year to determine your GPA.
Your CLASS RANK (where you stand in relation to the rest of the students in your class) is not
officially determined until the end of junior year. Class rank is determined by the number of
mark points which you have at the end of the year, NOT by your GPA.

Every transcript (the official record of all of your final grades) is carefully analyzed by each
counselor and an official class rank is distributed at the beginning of your senior year.

If you choose a study hall as one of your classes, you do not receive any mark points, so it will
likely affect your CLASS RANK.

LET’S TRY AN EXAMPLE:

Here are the final grades of a freshman student:

Course Grade Credits

English 9 5
World History Honors 5
Biology 5
Spanish II 5
Algebra I 5
Phys Ed. 9 3.75
Health 9 1.25
Freshman Seminar 5
Journalism 2.5
Writing Workshop 2.5
TOTAL:

Schedule Grades Grade Value X Credits = Mark Points

English 9
World History Honors
Biology
Spanish II
Algebra I
Phys Ed 9
Health 9
Freshman Seminar
Journalism
