COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF BRICK TEST

BY: TARA ISSMAT JAMEEL

GROUP: A2

EXPERIMENT NO.: 1
EXPERIMENT DATE: 11/4/2023
1-Introduction:
The compressive strength of a brick is the ability of a
brick to resist or withstand compressive loads when
tested with a Compression Tester [CTM]. The
compressive strength of a material is determined by the
material's ability to resist failure in the form of cracks
and fissures.
In this test, a compressive force is applied to both sides
of the brick and the maximum compression that the brick
can withstand without cracking is observed and recorded.

 Purpose :
To determine the load-carrying capacity (compressive
strength ) of a Brick.

2- Materials and Equipment :

2-1 Material:
\

1- Bricks

2-2 EQUIPMENT :

Measure plywood sheet

Preparation & Precaution:

Compressive testing oven
machine
 The brick should be undamaged and the
corners shouldn’t be broken.

 Bricks without efflorescence are selected for

the test.

 The block shouldn't be less than 7 days old.

 Remove unevenness on the brick faces by

grinding or brushing.

Test Procedures:
1. Select 5 bricks at random from the stack of
bricks.

2. Dry the test specimens in a ventilated oven

at (110 to 115°C) for not less than 24h and
until two successive weightings at intervals of
2h show an increment of loss not greater than
0.2% of the last previously determined weight
of the specimen.

3. Cool the specimens in a drying room with a

relative humidity between 30% and 70% and
weigh each one.

4. Test brick specimens flatwise.

That is the load shall be applied in the direction
of the depth of the brick.

5. Put the brick specimens in the testing

machine and place plywood sheet in top and
bottom to hold the brick.

6. Load the brick until the specimens crushed

and record the maximum applied load.
