Background:
Clotting time measures the time required to form a clot. The two most
common measures of blood clotting time are prothrombin and activated
thromboplastin time. The average time range for blood to clot is about 10 to
15 seconds. A number higher than that range means that it takes longer than
usual to clot blood.
Materials:
1) Capillary tube.
2) Alcoholic pads.
3) Stopwatch.
4) Lancet needle.
Procedure:
1) First wash your hands thoroughly.
2) Clean your finger with alcohol pad.
3) Press hold your finger tightly.
4) Prick the finger with the lancet needle.
5) Clean some blood with alcohol pad.
6) Hold the capillary tube over the blood, capillary tube will fill automatically.
7) Using stopwatch, after waiting for 4 to 5 seconds, break the capillary tube after
regular intervals of time (30 sec).
8) A tiny fiber will be formed.
Results:
Blood starts clotting and a tiny fiber like structure is seen when we break the
capillary tube.
Blood clotting fiber
in 30 seconds.
Conclusion:
Hence we determined the blood clotting time.
