new lesson (Elicit) Imagine you are flying on a plane where you can see beautiful
skies and amazing views, but how do you know where to go?
There aren’t any signs floating in the air. So how do pilots know (Answers may vary)
where to land their planes?

These lines are called meridians.
H. Presenting Everything that we see around us makes up our environment. The
examples/ landforms and bodies of water that make up the landscape, the
instances of the mountains and valleys, rivers and seas; the climate, the rains
new lesson brought by the monsoons, the warm, humid weather that we
(Engage) frequently experience; the natural resources that we make use of;
every plant and animal that live around us. Truly, the environment
is made up of a lot of things. All these things that we find in our
surroundings and all the natural phenomena that we observe are
not due to some random luck or accident. What makes up our
environment is very much related to where our country is located
on the globe. Or, to say it in a different way, the characteristics of
our environment are determined by the location of the Philippines
on the planet.

Before we proceed with our lesson, can everyone please read our
lesson objectives.
(Students read the lesson
objectives.)

At the end of this lesson the students

are expected to:
1. Identify the imaginary lines of the
coordinate system;
2. label the imaginary lines on the
globe; and
3. recognize the relationship
between latitude and the climate of a
certain place.
Group Activity: PARTS OF THE GLOBE
I. Discussing new Material:
concepts and Globe
practicing new
skills #1 (Explore) Procedure:
1. Study the image of a globe on the right, then get a real globe
and identify the parts that are labelled in the image. Be ready to
point them out when your teacher asks you.

2. After studying the globe and the image on the right, try to define
“equator” in you own words. Give your own definition when your
teacher ask you.

3. The “northern hemisphere” is the part of the world between the

north pole and the equator. Show the northern hemisphere on the
globe when your teacher asks you. Where is the Southern
hemisphere? Show the southern hemisphere on the globe when
your teacher asks you.

4. Study the drawing on the right. It shows the latitudes and the
longitudes.
J. Discussing new Guide Question:
concepts &
practicing new 1. How will you define equator in your own words? 1. (Answers may vary)
skills #2 (Explore)
2. What are the two poles of the globe?
2. The north and south pole
3. Differentiate Northern and Southern
hemisphere in your own words. 3. (Answers may vary)

4. Are these lines of latitude imaginary or not?

4. (Answers may vary)
5. Are the lines of latitude parallel to the equator and to each other
or not?
5. (Answers may vary)
K. Developing (The teacher will discuss about the coordinate system)
Mastery (Explain)
Where is the Philippines? Some of you may answer, its located-on
Earth or it can be found in Asian continent but where exactly is the
location of the Philippines on Earth or in Asian continent?
Tricky question, right? But this can be answered in today’s lesson,
using the coordinate system or the imaginary lines on the globe.

What is coordinate system?

Coordinate system is an arrangement

of reference lines or imaginary lines
on the globe. By means of coordinate
system the position or location of any
What are does imaginary lines in the globe? place on Earth’s surface can be
determined and described.

Imaginary lines on the globe

are the following: latitude,
longitude, equator, and
prime meridian.
Latitude
- are horizontal lines; it is
progressive angular
measurements north or
south of the equator.
- are imaginary lines running
from east to west on the
Earth’s surface.
- Lines of latitude are often
referred to as parallels, this
is because latitude is a line
 The lines of latitude are also known as parallels of that runs parallel to the
latitude. That is because the lines of latitude are parallels equator and never
of latitudes. That is because the lines of latitude are intersects.
parallel to the equator and to each other. Five lines of - Parallels get smaller towards
latitude have special names. They are listed in the table. the poles than closer to the
equator. Latitude is
measured in degrees.

Latitude Name
0 Equator
23.5 N Tropic of
Cancer
23.5 S Tropic of
Capricorn
66.5 N Arctic Circle
66.5 S Antarctic Circle

Longitude
- are vertical lines; it gives
the measurements east or
west of the Prime Meridian.
- are imaginary lines running
from the North Pole to the
South Pole. -
- Lines of longitude are often
referred to as meridians.
- Meridians are important for
setting time zones.
- Longitudes are measured in
equal degrees per line.

Equator
- an imaginary line dividing
the earth’s surface into two
hemispheres; Northern
Hemisphere (half of the
globe from equator to North
Pole) and Southern
Hemisphere (half of the
globe from equator to South
Pole).
- is located at zero degree
(0º). With the Equator as the
reference point, the North
Pole lies at 90°N and the
South Pole lies at 90°S.

Prime Meridian
- an imaginary line dividing
the earth’s surface into two
hemispheres; Western
Hemisphere and Easter
Hemisphere.
- serves as a reference point
for measuring the distance
east or west, located at zero
degree (0º) at Greenwich,
England.
- The farthest point eastwards
from the Prime Meridian is
expressed as 180°E and the
farthest point westward is
expressed as 180°W.
L. Finding practical Scenario:
applications of
concepts and skills Have you tried to visit a place for the first time? For instance, you
in daily living are going to Pasig Mega Market, if you are unfamiliar with the
(Elaborate) location, what is the best way to
find specific stall or food section in the wet market?

Why it is important to use directory map?

(Answers may vary)

M. Making To sum up what we have discussed today.

generalizations
and abstractions What is the relationship between the latitude and equator the closer the latitude is to
about the lesson in the climate that we experience? the equator, the warmer the
(Elaborate) not climate. The closer it is to
change the poles, the colder. Thus,
it is clear that there is a
relationship between the
latitude of a place and the
climate it experiences.
N. Evaluating Directions: Read the questions carefully then choose the letter of
learning (Evaluate) the correct answer in each item. Write your answer in a ¼ sheet of
paper.

1. Equator divides the Earth’s surface into two hemispheres, which

two hemispheres are being determined? 1. A
A. Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere 2. A
B. Western Hemisphere and Eastern Hemisphere 3. C
C. North Pole and South Pole 4. C
D. None of the above 5. D

2. Why prime meridian serves as the reference point for

measuring west or east distance?
A. It is located at zero degree (0º)
B. It is an imaginary line
C. It intersects equator
D. It is a meridian

3. How do lines of latitude or parallels run on the globe?

A. From North Pole to South Pole
B. From North Pole only
C. From West to East
D. From West only

4. How does latitude differ from longitude?

A. Latitude measures south only while longitude measures
east only
B. Latitude measures north only while longitude measures
west only
C. Equator is the reference point of latitude while prime
meridian is the reference point of longitude
D. Prime meridian is the reference point of latitude while
equator is the reference point of longitude
5. Which of the following best described coordinate system?
A. It locates places on Earth
B. It describes the position of places on Earth
C. It is consisted of imaginary lines such as latitude,
longitude, equator, and prime meridian
D. All of the above
O. Additional ACTIVITY 5: PLACES I WANT TO VISIT SOMEDAY!
activities for Procedure:
Application or 1. Locate 3 places around the world that you wish to visit someday.
remediation. 2. Give its coordinates and the reason why you wanted to visit those
places.
(Extend)

(Answers may vary)
