Film Institutes or Film training institutes
- are primarily academic institutes for training young, aspiring artists and
technicians, grooming their talents in their respective fields i.e., acting,
directing, editing sound engineering, etc., so that they can serve the film
industry, this highly competitive and fast flourishing world of
entertainment.
The function of a film institute in to impart training in the disciplines of:
-
• Film direction, film acting, cinematography, editing, sound recording,
sound engineering, and film processing. Animation, T.V. engineering and
graphics.
• Film institute provides technical training in the production of films and
undertaking research in different fields connected with films
Film Production Stages
Stages are as follow:
• Development;
• Pre-production stage; Preparation of the script; Pre-Production
planning.
• Production stages; Picture Shooting/ Cinematography. Indoor shooting
-Studio; Outdoor shooting – on location
• Post- production stage;
• Distribution

Pre-Production Stage: During this phase of filmmaking, preparations are

made film making. Cast and crews are hired, location is finalized and
permissions are taken and sets are built for the indoor shooting of the
film. To control all these activities and all other activities during film
making and promotions a production office is established which controls
all the activities and does all the paperwork necessary during film
making.
Pre-Production Facilities:
• Office Spaces: During the pre-production phase of making motion
pictures, cast and crews are hired, location for shooting the movie is
finalized, permission for the location is taken, sets are built for indoor
shooting etc. To control all these activities during the pre-production
phase and during all other phases, office space is required. From here,
producers and all the other members of the crew control the movie-
making process.
For the workroom, a minimum area of 8.00 sqm should be allowed. The
free circulation space should be of a minimum of 1.5 sqm per employee,
and the width of the corridor should be such that each person can pass
each other easily.

Entrance area: The connection between public and working areas. The
important functions are the lobby, access control, information, visitor
registration, and waiting zone
Production Facilities: Studio complex A key common feature in the
international filmmaking industry has been the existence of studio
complexes with co-production services.
The term “studio-complex” has been termed because of these: •
Incorporate multiple sound stages of varying sizes to aid the filmmaking
process.
• Provide a range of production and post-production services.
• Are flexible to the needs for setting up outdoor shooting facilities
along with the indoor studios.
• Consists of huge backlot areas, storage facilities, and integrated
workshops. Overall Planning of the Studio Complex There will be
different types of studios with different sizes to accommodate different
needs. It is also supported with all required facilities as listed below:
• Reception
• Audience and client viewing area
• Meeting room
• Dressing room
• Catering and toilets
• Vision control
• Audio control
• Access stages
• Director and producer room
• Workshops and storages
• Loading area
• Common spaces
Space Requirements: • The minimum practical floor area for a small
commercial TV studio would be 60 m2 with static cameras.
• The TV station studios range between 200 and 400 m2.
• The studio height is determined by the clear space required below the
lighting grid (a function of the longest camera angle). The minimum
height for a small studio is 4 m; in the larger studios 11 m to the grid with
a clear above of 2.5 m, making something over 13.5 m overall.

• In these studios, and access gallery is required at grid level

approximately 4.5 m above studio floor level. This is normally to avoid
obstruction of access doors and observation windows, access to the
galleries from the studio floor level is mandatory and direct access to the
lighting grid level is desirable. Interview and Announcer Studios These
studios range in size from 30 to 60 m2 with a height of 4 to 6 m. Static
cameras and a simple form of lighting grid combined with floor lighting
stands are used.
Audience Participation Studios Some productions require audience
participation and fixed theatre-type seating on terraces are provided. In
smaller studios, this is demountable, so storage space has to be provided.
Audiences place more stringent demands on the planning of a TV
complex, as segregated access and emergency escape routes must be
provided. Animation Studio ‘Animation studio is a company producing
animated media.’ The idea of a studio dedicated to cartoons. Workshops
Architectural Considerations for a Workshop:
• Natural light should be provided in sufficient quantity and through a
ribbon window.
• Spaces like storage, cutting, finishing, etc. should be arranged
according to the sequence of work.
• For small workshops with up to 10 staff, production flow is in line or L
shape and for medium workshops having more than 10 staff, production
flow is in U shape, circular, or square.
• The workshop should have a height of 4.5 m Dressing Room / Make-Up
Room The dressing room is used in a studio for changing the dress and for
hair and makeup by actors. The dressing room.
