Characteristics of Good claim:
1. A claim should be argumentative and
debatable.
Example: Men are better in Math than
Women.

2. A claim should be specific and focused.

interesting and engaging.

should result from reasonable
weighing of support provided.

Claims of fact
Claims of value
Claims of policy

Claims of fact
-refer to a condition has existed
(past), exists (present), or will exist
(future).
- based on data, documents,
scientific observation, and research.

Guide Questions:

❑ Does it exist?
❑ Is it a fact?
❑ How can its truthfulness can be verified?

❑ The oldest known disease in

Claims of value
- Are value of judgement based on
morals, standards, and norms.
- Based on dislikes or likes/ good
or bad.

❑ Death penalty is unjust.
❑ It is better to have loved
and lost, than never to
have loved at all.

- Specific and measurable actions


that needs to be done in order
to address the issue or concerns
presented in an argument.
