What is Agriculture Instructor Guide

Objectives:

1. Student will be able to define agriculture.


2. Student will be able to describe the difference between a farmer, a rancher, and
a fisherman.
3. Student will be able to describe the impact of agriculture on daily life.
4. Student will be able to identify the major sectors of the agricultural industry.
5. Student will be able to identify career opportunities available in the major sectors
of agriculture.

Objective: Student will be able to define agriculture.


Word association: Have students write the first word that comes to mind for the
following list of words.

DNA, food, tractor, baseball, denim, tilapia, greenhouse, newspaper, zoo, farming

Then ask what they all have in common. Answer should be agriculture.

DNA – corn breeding,


food – farmers produce
tractor – farmers use
baseball – made of cow hide
denim – made with cotton
tilapia – from a fish farm
greenhouse – for food production or ornamental horticulture
newspaper – paper made from trees
zoo – animal science and veterinary care
farming – production of food and/or fiber.

Have students try to define agriculture. Then show Lesson Video 1 Definition of
Agriculture

Objective: Student will be able to describe the difference between a
farmer, a rancher, and a fisherman.

Ask students to identify the difference between a farmer, a rancher, and a fisherman.
Give them time to respond then show Lesson Video 2

Objective: Student will be able to describe the impact of agriculture on


daily life.

Before showing Lesson Video 3 have the students take the pre-quiz. Allow them to
correct their own answers while watching Lesson Video 3.

Following Lesson Video 3 discuss the following facts…


• Agriculture largest industry in US – 20% of all jobs
• Farmers and ranchers make up less than 1% of US population
• 97% of all farms and ranches in US are family owned
• Farmers and ranchers are diverse, growing biotech, organic, and conventional
products
• Each farm/ranch produce enough food and fiber for 169 people
• Farmers/ranchers receive 17 cents of every dollar spent for food.
• US consumers spend about 6.1% of their income on food each year.
• Ag research and a healthy food supply have contributed to longer life in US

Objective: Student will be able to identify the major sectors of the


agricultural industry.

Explain how agriculture has been divided into seven main sectors.

Objective: Student will be able to identify career opportunities available
