Introduction
Over the span of 20 years, the use of
nutritional supplements have
increased. With the rise of health and
fitness influences in the media, the
demand for quick fix products have
surged.

The new interest in health and fitness

supplements can pose many risks as
well as benefits for the public. It is
important that all communities stay
educated and understand to identify
red flags when choosing over the
counter supplements.

Why is this
important?
• Health and wellness supplements are not regulated by the
government
• Taking at least 1 informative class on health and nutrition can
improve one's knowledge on the subject substantially
• Preventative action
• Spread awareness
• Supplements should be used along with proper diet and exercise

Plan of Action
• Moving forward, ensure you are doing your part before
looking toward supplements.
• Speak with your primary care to get labs done before you
introduce a supplement into your diet
• Encourage your community to take a health lecture like this
one to prevent health risks
• Share your knowledge with the people around you
• Conduct ample research on the products you decide to
consume rather than choosing the first one you see

Multicultural and
Diverse Populations
• Multicultural and diverse populations are the most at risk for
a lack of health education
• This lack of education on the topic is one of the main factor of
their leading numbers for preventable disease like diabetes,
high blood pressure, depression and anxiety
• As health professionals, it is our job to know and understand
other cultures from our own so that we cater our practices to
their care and with respect

Why is Cultural Competence
Important?
- Cultural competence means that you are
aware of the differences between other
cultures. Which allows you to cater your
approach to their needs.
- It means that you understand there may be
outside factors affecting one's health that is
not in their control
- It means you respect cultural food choices
and don’t try to mold their diet into a western
way of eating rather than find similar
alternative.

Closing
Just like a doctor’s visit, everyone
needs to take accountability on what
they put into their body.

The nutrition supplement companies

are not regulated by the government;
therefore, we must educate ourselves
and our community on the risks and
benefits.

Cultural competence is everyone’s job

to learn about and implement.

Every patient is deserving of equal care

regardless of their race or religion.
