Cuban Missile Crisis

In 1959, following a brutal dictatorship, lead by Fulgencio Batista, a young Cuban, Fidel Castro took
power, following a rebellion. He began implementing socialist policies and leaned towards
communism. The American sugar plantations were nationalised by Castro, which caused the
American government to cut diplomatic relations. In 1961 the USA sent 1400 Cuban exiles to try and
invade Cuba, but were all captured, after landing in the Bay of Pigs. Soon after Castro requested
soviet support, to deter the Americans ever trying this again. The Soviets began constructing missile
launching pads in Cuba, which American U2 spy planes soon detected and President Kennedy had 3
options: bomb the missile sites with nuclear weapons, bomb them with conventional weapons, then
invade Cuba or enforce a blockade to cease soviet missiles continuing to be set up in Cuba.

In October, 1962 Kennedy announced the quarantine of Cuba and would stop any vessel, ones
carrying weapons were sent back.
