STARRY NIGHT
Artwork by : Van Gogh
Subject:
•The Starry Night is an oil-on-canvas painting by the Dutch Post-Impressionist painter
Vincent van Gogh. Painted in June 1889, it depicts the view from the east-facing window of
his asylum room at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, just before sunrise, with the addition of an
imaginary village.

Factual Meaning:
The Starry Night meaning is usually associated with Van Gogh's deteriorating mental health. The
blues he used in this painting are a return to the colors he used previously during his struggles with
mental illness. The swirling brushstrokes may also indicate his mental state.

Conventional Meaning:
In Starry Night contoured forms are a means of expression and they are used to convey
emotion. Many feel that van Gogh´s turbulent quest to overcome his illness is reflected in the
dimness of the night sky. The village is painted with dark colors but the brightly lit windows
create a sense of comfort.

Subjective Meaning:
This means that artists of this period took a subjective view of the visual world and painted
their world according to their own artistic perceptions. ... In particular, he liked to paint
landscapes that reflected his own emotions and soul.
The Scream
Artwork by: Edvard Munch
Subject:
The Scream, painting by Edvard Munch that became his most famous work. He completed
two versions in 1893, another in 1895, and yet another likely in 1910. The Scream is one of
the most familiar images in modern art. It stemmed from a panic attack that Munch suffered
in 1892.

Factual Meaning:
When he painted The Scream in 1893, Munch was inspired by “a gust of melancholy,” as he
declared in his diary. It's because of this, coupled with the artist's personal life trauma, that
the painting takes on a feeling of alienation, of the abnormal.

Conventional Meaning:
The Scream is a composition created by Norwegian artist Edvard Munch in 1893. The
agonized face in the painting has become one of the most iconic images of art, seen as
symbolizing the anxiety of the human condition.

Subjective Meaning:
The man appears to be terrified of something, as he screams and has a panic attack.
Skull of a Skeleton with Burning Cigarette
Artwork By: Van Gogh
Subject:
This skeleton with a lit cigarette in its mouth is a juvenile joke. Van Gogh painted it in early
1886, while studying at the art academy in Antwerp.

Factual Meaning:
According to some researchers, though disputed by Van Gogh's nephew, the artist chose this
macabre subject, in part, because he was suffering from syphilis. This painting reflects Van
Gogh's extreme poverty, which compelled him to smoke cigarettes instead of eating meals.

Conventional Meaning:
Some say that Vincent van Gogh's Skull of a Skeleton with Burning Cigarette was painted as
a joke or “satirical” image. Others say that it could have alluded to the idea of death, painted
as a type of “memento mori”, which were paintings with symbols like skulls that acted as
reminders of death.

Subjective:
What I see in the image is that the man's death was caused by cigarette addiction.
