III. Test Conditions

Follow the setup and environmental information below to ensure the PXIe-
4139 meets the published specifications.

1. Keep cabling as short as possible.

2. Verify that all connections to the PXIe-4139, including front panel
connections and screws are secure.
3. Ensure that the PXI chassis fan speed is set to HIGH, that the fan filters (if
present) are clean, and that the empty slots contain slot blockers and
filler panels.
4. Allow a warm-up time of at least 30 minutes after the chassis is powered
on and NI-DCPower is loaded and recognizes the PXIe-4139.
5. Use shielded copper wire for all cable connections to the device. Use
twisted-pair wire to eliminate noise and thermal offsets.
6. Keep relative humidity between 10% and 70%, noncondensing.
7. Do not use the NI-DCPower Soft Front Panel (SFP) to request test points
for any adjustment functions.
8. When making measurements, configure any specified digital multimeters
(DMMs) with the best available ranges and measurement settings for
each specified test point.
9. For verification procedures, maintain an ambient temperature of 23 OC +/-
5OC.
10. For adjustment procedures, maintain an ambient temperature of 23 OC
+/- 1OC.

3
IV. As-Found/As-Left Limits
The as-found limits are the published specifications for the device. NI use
these limits to determine whether the device meets the device specifications
when it is received for calibration.

The as-left limits are equal to the published NI specifications for the device,
less gourd bands for measurement uncertainty, temperature drift, and drift
over time. NI uses these limits to determine whether the device will meet the
device specifications over its calibration interval.

V. Calibration Overview
Calibration includes the steps shown in the following figure:

Figure 5.1 Calibration Overview

1. Initial setup – Check if PXIe-4139 to be calibrated is present in the system.

Note: Make sure it is configured and named ‘SMU_4139_C1_SX’ where X is
the slot number in Measurement & Automation Explorer (NI MAX).
2. Verification – Verify the existing operation of PXIe-4139. This step
confirms if the device is operating within the published specifications
prior to adjustment.
3. Adjustment – Adjust the calibration constants of the PXIe-4139.
4. Reverification – Repeat the Verification process to ensure that the device
is operating within the published specifications after adjustment.

4
VI. Calibration Main Program
This program is designed specifically for calibration of NI PXIe-4139. Figure
6.1 shows the Front Panel of the Main Calibration VI. The front panel
provides the last external calibration date as well as the external calibration
due date of the instrument. Instrument drop down menu allows the user to
pick the PXIe-4139 to be calibrated.

Figure 6.1 Main Calibration VI

VII. Verification
The performance verification procedures assume that adequate traceable
uncertainties are available for the calibration references. Follow the steps in
performing verification of the instrument. (Note: You do not need to
separately verify both measurement and output. The architecture of the
PXIe-4139 ensures that if measurement is accurate, then output is as well,
and vice versa.)

1. Click VERIFY button to start verification process. Upon clicking the VERIFY
Button, verification dialog box will pop up. (Note: Complete each
procedure only after successfully completing all previous verification
procedures. Verify ranges in the order listed on each table.)

VIII. Adjustment
Following the adjustment procedure automatically updates the calibration
date and temperature on the device. (Note: You do not need to separately
adjust both measurement and output. The architecture of the PXIe-4139
ensures that if measurement is accurate, then output is as well, and vice
versa.)

Follow the steps in performing adjustment of the instrument.

1. Click ‘BACK’ button to exit the verification dialog box and return to the
Main Calibration panel.
2. Wait a minimum of five minutes after completing verification.
3. Complete all the adjustment procedures in the specified order.
4. Click CALIBRATE button to start adjustment process. Upon clicking the
‘CALIBRATE’ Button, adjustment dialog box will pop up. If your device

16
passes all verification procedures successfully and you want to skip
updating the calibration constants, you can update solely the calibration
date by clicking “BACK” button. (Note: Complete all adjustment
procedures within 15 minutes or less after clicking the CALIBRATE
button.)
