Test Name:
ISEE - Independent School Entrance Examination

Description:
Used for admission to private middle schools and high schools. If you're looking to attend an elite private
middle or high school, this is a test you'll need to do well on. ISEE tests the Vocabulary, Math, and
Reading Comprehension of the students.

ISEE is the most trusted admissions assessment tool available, and an important part of well-rounded
admissions processes. The ISEE empowers schools to objectively compare student applicants
alongside (or in the absence of) other admissions inputs.

The ISEE isn’t like other admissions tests, because it not only measures what students know, it also
measures how they think. It is a standardized assessment of candidates' skills in four critical areas;
Reading Comprehension, Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Math Achievement. ISEE is
the most flexible admission assessment available with online, paper-based, and at-home administrations
available around the globe.

Structure:
There are three (3) different levels of the test offered, depending on where you are in your education:
 The Upper Level is designed for applicants in 9th grade and above.
 The Middle Level is for applicants in 7th and 8th grade, and
 The Lower Level is for applicants in 5th and 6th grade.
No matter which level of the test you'll be taking, the ISEE will always test the same sections—Verbal
Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, and Mathematics Achievement—but
there are certain differences within the sections depending on the level of the test.
The ISEE uses synonyms and sentence completion to test vocabulary.
The reading passages on the ISEE tend to be longer.
The ISEE also places a heavier emphasis on mathematical reasoning.
The test also contains an unscored essay that is sent to the schools you're applying to.

How is the ISEE scored?

Verbal Reasoning Reading Comprehension
 797-935 (Upper Level)  825-940 (Upper Level)
 782-926 (Middle Level)  799-940 (Middle Level)
 760-903 (Lower Level)  764-913 (Lower Level)

Quantitative Reasoning Mathematics Achievement

 815-940 (Upper Level)  806-940 (Upper Level)
 791-927 (Middle Level)  774-907 (Middle Level)
 766-911 (Lower Level)  769-899 (Lower Level)

Essay
 It's not scored, but a copy is sent to the schools to which you apply. All scores are converted to a
grade-appropriate “stanine,” which represents a percentile range.

The ISEE is available in multiple formats and testing locations around the globe. Applicants can choose
to register for the format and location that is most convenient for their family. Both formats have the same
number of questions, the same timing, and the same opportunity for students to change their answers
within a test section.

Students may take the ISEE once per testing season—Fall, Winter, and Spring/Summer—for a total of
up to three times a school year, but the majority of the testing dates fall during the fall and early winter.
If a student takes the exam in September during the Fall Testing Season, they’d need to wait at least
until December, the Winter Testing Season, to take the ISEE again.
The number of available ISEE test dates will depend on your location, and you can take the ISEE only
