2.3 Pile Testing & Instrumentation
The testing and quality control of piles at construction and post construction stages has become a
common practice in most of the projects. ACES delivers quality services with a focus on safety, val-
ue, innovation and excellence. Our comprehensive pile testing services includes:
Caliper Logging
Caliper log determines the shape and size variations of the drilled pile borehole to assess zones of
likely collapse, necking or bulging prior to concreting of the shaft.
Ultrasonic Crosshole Logging
An important very common test to investigate the quality of the shaft concrete and locate defective
zones within the pile shaft.

Shrinkage Monitoring
This instrumentation using Vibrating Wire Strain Gauges
(Embedment type) is carried out to monitor strain in the
concrete structure due to shrinkage. Shrinkage after hard-
ening of concrete is the decrease with time of concrete vol-
ume.

ACES have developed good reputation in solving “Construction Problems”. Accordingly, ACES es-
tablished a special studies & project department to handle a wide range of projects with an open-
ended scope. ACES employs highly qualified specialists in highways, structural and geotechnical
engineering for this purpose. Also, state of the art equipment for destructive and non-destructive
testing are utilized by ACES. All available equipment's are calibrated and in accordance with the
International Standards such as BS, EN, ASTM, DIN, AASHTO, CIRIA etc.
ACES have conducted this specialized work in several countries in the Arab World and in Asia.
Scope of services
Evaluation of condition and damage of existing structures.
Evaluation of fire damaged structures and design of repair.
Non-destructive testing of reinforced concrete to determine diameter, spacing and direc-
tion of reinforcing steel.

Surface Irregularities Test by Travelling Beam
Three meter long travelling beam device is used to check any irregularities in both concrete and
bituminous road surface. A sensing unit comprising a wheel connected to an indicator provides a
magnification of 4: 1. Deviation of the surface from a straight line is shown on a incremental
graduated scale.
- Surface irregularities tested by straight edge 3m & 4m.
- Friction properties of asphalt road using skid resistance pendulum test.
Visual Inspection Using (PCI) Pavement Condition Index technique
Determine the Pavement Condition Index (PCI) of the roads:
In order to obtain a useful condition assessment of the pavements, unbiased and repeatable sur-
vey procedures must be used. To provide for maximum usefulness, the survey procedures must
be easily understood and relatively simple to perform in the field. ARAB COMPANY FOR LABOR-
ATORIES AND SOIL had extensive experience in “condition-assessment” survey procedures that
are applicable to a wide variety of user's needs.
Determine the pavements structural characteristics through destructive testing program
(test pit and cores) for the pavement layers:
Determine, by use of laboratory and field testing, the physical and mechanical properties of the
materials of each pavement layer.
Determine, by use of test pits and cores, the existing thickness of each pavement layer.

2.8 Quality Control of Projects
The quality control of projects department is one of the largest departments of ACES. ACES pio-
neered this activity in Jordan several years ago and this service is gaining popularity with own-
ers, engineers and contractors. ACES has implemented quality control programs for majors pro-
jects in Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar and Jordan such as Airports, Hotels, Hospitals, Thermal Power
Plants, Highways, Large Fuel Tanks, Dams, Precast Factories and other major industrial projects.
ACES maintain several sets of laboratory equipment in order to establish site laboratories when-
ever requested.

Mobile Mapping :
Mobile mapping is the process of geographical data collection using a mobile vehicle, this system
is composed of a synchronized group of topographical and photographical de-vices completed
with remote sensing technology which work in compatibility in order to form and create high
quality point-maps.
3D Laser Scanning :
3D Laser Scanning is a non-contact, non-destructive technology that digitally captures the shape
of physical objects using a line of laser light. 3D laser scanners create “point clouds” of data from
the surface of an object. In other words, 3D laser scanning is
a way to capture a physical ob-ject’s exact size and shape
into the computer world as a digital 3-dimensional repre-
sentation.

Levelling is the measurement of geodetic height using an optical levelling instrument and a level
staff or rod having a numbered scale. Common levelling instruments include the spirit level, the
dumpy level, the digital level, and the laser level.
