SCORPIO
Its name is derived from the constellation Scorpius,
which in Latin means Scorpio, or literally translate as
the "creature with the burning sting".

It is also the one of the zodiac constellations, first


catalogued by the Greek astronomer Ptolemy in the
2nd century and it is known of the one of the oldest
constellation .

LOCATION AND OF THE


CONSTELLATION OF SCORPIO
Scorpio is a zodiac constellation located in Southern
celestial hemisphere, where it sits near the of the Milky
Way, between Libra to the west and Sagittarius to the east
and it can be seen in summer from the Northern
hemisphere.

Scorpio occupying an area of 497 square degrees. It lies in


the third quadrant of the southern hemisphere (SQ3) and
can be seen at latitudes between +40 degrees and -90
degrees.
SCORPIO LOOKS LIKE...
The scorpio constellation glitters against
the backdrop of the Milky Way. It has a
curvy S-shaped body ending in a set of
claws at the head and a pair of "stinger "
stars at the tail. Although the stars of
Scorpius are at the different distances in
space relative to our Solar System, from
Earth they look like a very distinctive fish
hook shape.

SCORPIO STARS
Often referred to as the heart of the scorpio, ANTARES is
the brightest star in the constellation Scorpio and its Latin
name is "Alpha Scorpii". The 15th brightest star in the sky,
has a magnitude of 1.1. Its name comes from the Greek for
“rival of Ares” or ( rival of the planet Mars) and was
probably given because of the star's red colour and
brightness.
The sting at the end of the scorpion's tail consists of two stars,
SHAULA and LESATH. These appear as double star to the
naked eye, sometimes called the "Cats Eyes".They point to one
of the brightest and most beautiful open star cluster in the sky.
MYTHOLOGY OF THE CONSTELLATION OF
SCORPIO
Scorpio, in Greek Mythology, comes from the story of
Orion. This giant of a man was the son of Poseidon and
Euryale, and was also said to be the most handsome man
alive. He and Artemis were hunting partners. Orion was a
great hunter who had boasted that he could kill any
animal on Earth. Gaia (Earth) was angry with Orion and
sent Scorpius, a giant scorpio to kill him. The two fought
and both were killed in the struggle, but from their ashes ,
rose the constellations Scorpius and Orion. The two
oppenents are never seen in the sky at the same time.
