What’s new in GeoMoS v8.1 released in December 2021

OVERVIEW Leica GeoMoS version 8.1 is an update from Leica GeoMoS 7.0 and newer versions. It includes sig-
nificant improvements and new functionalities.
GeoMoS v8.1 requires a valid CCP with an expiry date after 30th November 2021.
Overview of the highlights:
▪ Leica ComBox60 support
▪ New license: GeoMoS Monitor Professional TimeLimited (30 days)
▪ General Improvements

LEICA COMBOX60 SUPPORT GeoMoS v8.1 fully supports the new Leica ComBox60, an intelligent autonomous device for com-
munication and power management. ComBox60 is a new member of the Leica M-Com family and it
significantly reduces the time required to start monitoring. It is IP66 rated, thus it can be used out-
doors in harsh environments without the need for any special enclosures.

It’s equipped with an internal battery and Leica GeoMoS Edge, which means that in the case of
power and/or communication failure, the pre-configured measurement cycle will continue without
interruptions.
Multiple power and network connectivity options are available:
• Power: mains electricity, solar panels, other alternative power sources according to prod-
uct data sheet
• Connectivity: via EdgeConnect (Cellular or Ethernet) or within Local Area Network (Ether-
net only). Other services (e.g. DynDNS) aren’t required anymore.
ComBox60 can use the Power Saving Mode, which puts the device together with all connected sen-
sors to sleep while not measuring. This is especially important when ComBox60 is powered by alter-
native power sources.
Another important feature are diagnostic sensors: input voltage, internal temperature, pressure
and battery voltage are being read out from the device, so the user can set up limits and messaging
to these observation types to track its state.
Following monitoring sensors can be used with ComBox60:
• All total stations and MultiStations in Leica GeoMoS Monitor
• Leica GMX910 Smart Antenna
• Leica Nivels
• Weather stations: Leica TP meteo (new variant, Art. Nr. 950830) and Vaisala weather sta-
tions
• Dimetix Laser Distance sensor
• Levels: LS15, DNA, Sprinter 150/250
For more information about ComBox60, please download the Leica ComBox60 Getting Started

GEOMOS EDGE AND With Leica GeoMoS v8.0 we introduce a new concept for data acquisition, GeoMoS Edge. GeoMoS
EDGECONNECT Edge is a GeoMoS Monitor software component, that is embedded on ComGate20 routers. This
means that the protocol for data acquisition for total stations and weather sensors using GeoMoS
TECHNOLOGY, POWERED BY Edge has changed: GeoMoS Monitor is not communicating directly with the sensors anymore, but
XALT sending configuration to GeoMoS Edge on ComGate20, which is performing all measurement se-
quences based on the configuration.

GeoMoS Edge is available only on ComGate20 with valid GeoMoS Edge subscriptions. Following
types of connections are supporting GeoMoS Edge:
1. EdgeConnect technology, powered by Xalt – cloud-based service owned by Hexagon,
whose purpose is to provide a secure connection between the ComGate20 devices in the
field and GeoMoS Monitor. The benefit of using EdgeConnect is significantly simplified
setup and a possibility to use any SIM card for mobile data connection, as well as cable
connection to the world wide web.
2. Other connections – GeoMoS Edge is also available with LAN connection.

Workflow: GeoMoS Edge via EdgeConnect

To be able to use GeoMoS Edge over EdgeConnect, the following workflow is necessary:
1. Turn on / factory reset the ComGate20 → this will automatically set the ComGate20 in
pairing mode and connect it to EdgeConnect
2. In GeoMoS Monitor, a ComGate20 device needs to be inserted in the Communication De-
vice Manager

With GeoMoS v8.0 a new Measurement Cycle Editor is available. It allows creating sequences and
NEW MEASUREMENT CYCLE
putting sensors or actions in order of execution.
EDITOR
Measurement cycle is split into 2 main sections:
1. GeoMoS Server – contains all sequences which do not use GeoMoS Edge on ComGate20
with following subsections:
a. TPS / Meteo Sensors – sequences with total stations and weather sensors which
aren’t using GeoMoS Edge on ComGate20 (GeoMoS Edge is running in GeoMoS
Monitor)
b. Imports / Virtual sensors / Actions – sequences with all non-physical sensors
and actions (e.g. CSV Import, virtual sensors, emails, …)
c. GNSS / Nivels / Other Sensors – sequences with all physical sensors, which
aren’t supported by GeoMoS Edge and use direct communication with GeoMoS
Monitor (e.g. GNSS, Nivel, levels, …).
2. GeoMoS Edge devices – the list of all ComGate20 devices added to the project with active
GeoMoS Edge. Each device contains its own list of GeoMoS Edge sequences with total
stations and weather sensors.

Notes:
Further changes and functions are also available with the new measurement cycle:
1. New 2-face measurement routine is available for all total stations: measuring all points in
Face 1 first, followed by measurements in Face 2
2. All sequences can be set to active or inactive, depending on the dynamic requirements of
the project
3. Total stations can be operated with various GeoMoS functions (e.g. Remote Positioning,
Sensor Location) without stopping the measurement cycle
4. Pausing the measurement cycle and measuring the selected point group is not available
anymore. Instead, a whole (active) sequence can be tested by setting the start time to
current time and starting the measurement cycle.

NEW SENSOR TYPE: IN- In-place inclinometers are typically used for monitoring subsurface deformations around
PLACE INCLINOMETER excavations or within slopes. An in-place inclinometer is designed to operate in a borehole and
provides inclination changes in defined depths of the borehole.
The inclinometers can now be grouped together as an in-place inclinometer per borehole, and
the inclination displacements can easily be calculated from the raw data using the new In-
Place Inclinometer template in Virtual Sensor Editor. The workflow is very simple, combining
the CSV Import and virtual sensors. A new template feature is available in the Virtual Sensor
Editor, by clicking on Use Template button. The new template allows the straightforward
definition of boreholes and automatic creation of required formulas and aliases for calculation
of displacements from the imported inclinations.

There are two types of displacements calculated: incremental and cumulative. The formulas can
be edited to include the calibration of the sensors as well.

All displacements can be subjected to limit checks and included in messaging. The results are
shown in GeoMoS Monitor in Observations and Charts tabs, as well as in GeoMoS Now! graphs,
Tables and Point Details in maps.

API KEY The new functionality API key provides even more secure API interface. It’s strongly recommended

Page 16
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

to use the key with the API functionality, in order to ensure the highest connection protection.

The GeoMoS API is an option to use on any project and is license protected. This option can be or-
dered using the article number 838 783.
Similar to all other options in GeoMoS Monitor, the Option 5 can be active for one project only, i.e.
in case of multiple active projects. To activate this option, please select it in the Project Properties
editor, after you have activated the GeoMoS API license in the CLM tool.

EXTENDED GEOMOS API New GeoMoS API features have been added. It is an easy-to-use interface, enabling the use of in-
formation from the GeoMoS database in any other application. The result is delivered in XML struc-

COORDINATE IMPORT Coordinate import is now a part of the CSV Import. This allows the import of coordinates coming
from the TPS Monitoring APP available for Captivate and SmartWorx, as well as any other
coordinate file comprised of an epoch, point name and at least one coordinate (Easting, Northing,
Height).
The configuration is done in the CSV Import wizard by choosing the “Coordinates” in the type
dropdown menu. Choosing the “Observations” will lead to the import wizard for all other
observation types.

Special options which are valid for the coordinate import only:
▪ The unit of the coordinates must be selected
▪ Available observation types are Northing / Easting / Height
▪ Define blunder check threshold for imported coordinates (3D distance)
▪ Possibility to update reference coordinates with imported values

Once configured, the coordinate import must be added to the measurement cycle and triggered. All
files in the defined folder will be processed.
Imported coordinates can be visualised in GeoMoS Now! by creating graphs and tables or in Point
Details in the maps.
Note: Coordinate import feature is protected by GeoMoS Monitor Option 1 (Computation).

SUPPORT FOR WISENMESHNET ® are geotechnical sensors working in node-gateway principle. Each node (sensor)
WISENMESHNET ® takes its own readings and relays data to other nodes by using the radio mesh network technology,
to the gateway which transfers the data to the internet. The data is then downloaded from the
SENSORS SFTP server and processed by GeoMoS automatically.

Page 19
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

The configuration for each sensor output file is done in 3 steps:

1. Configuring the download in the Message Configurator by inserting the “Download Files from
SFTP” action.

2. Configuring the CSV Import in the Sensor Manager

3. Adding the download action together with the corresponding CSV Import to the measurement
cycle.
The data coming from the WISENMESHNET ® sensors can be visualised in GeoMoS Now! by creating
graphs and tables or in Point Details in the maps.
Note: In order to have a smooth flow from downloading to processing the data, there must be a
small offset in the measurement cycle between the download action from the SFTP server and the
CSV import.

API IMPROVEMENTS New GeoMoS API commands have been added. It is an easy-to-use interface, enabling the use of in-
formation from the GeoMoS database in any other application. The result is delivered in XML struc-
ture (Extensible Markup Language) or in JSON structure (JavaScript Object Notation). New functions
included in GeoMoS API are:

SINGLE-POINT SCAN AREA Scan areas can now be defined by measuring only one point. The square with selected side
DEFINITION length will automatically be drawn on the image around the measured point, creating the scan
area.
Along the existing manual definition of the scan area, where in minimum 3 points must be
measured, there is a new functionality “Predefined square”, where only the centre point of
the desired scan area has to be measured.
Single-point scan area definition speeds up learning of new scan areas and allows the user to
simplify monitoring of large objects and roads by splitting them into multiple smaller scan
areas.

Finally, options for visualization and saving to the database have to be selected. If the image is
linked to a point, it will be visible on the GeoMoS Now! map.
Once the image capture has been created, it can be added to the measurement cycle.
Image Capture Editor is available in the basic GeoMoS Monitor module 774 119, i.e. no additional
sensor licenses are required. Visualisation of captured images is available both from GeoMoS Now!
And GeoMoS Analyzer. Images can be extracted from the database by using GeoMoS API.

The GeoMoS API is an option to use on any project and is license protected. This option can be or-
dered using the article number 838 783.
Similar to Option Scanning, the Option 5 can be active for one project only, i.e. in case of multiple
active projects. To activate this option, please select it in the Project Properties editor, after you
have activated the GeoMoS API license in the CLM tool.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Some 3rd party software tools, external database scripts, Microsoft Excel queries, Adjustment pack-
ages and more sophisticated Web Portals in the market are directly accessing the SQL server data-
GEOMOS MONITOR base of GeoMoS Monitor. Direct access over the open interface to the GeoMoS database will not
DATABASE ENCRYPTION be available in the future. The direct SQL server interface will be replaced by an API. Some of the
following implementations are planned for the future releases of GeoMoS Monitor:
▪ Database encryption is important in order to protect highly confidential monitoring data from
any unauthorized user access. This is especially driven by more and more data hosting on un-
known server infrastructure in the cloud. Even if the server infrastructure is stolen, we will pro-
tect the critical monitoring data.
▪ Increase the monitoring system stability and reliability because 3rd party tools would only be
using the new standardized interface GeoMoS-API.
▪ Prevent 3rd party software from writing data back to the database and creating potential risk to
stop the monitoring service completely or partially.
▪ Provide a standardized interface when future database design changes would be required, to
optimize the handling of growing data volumes. The 3rd party software using the GeoMoS-API
would not be affected by these changes.
We’re officially announcing the new interface strategy with the release of GeoMoS version 7.1. All
3rd party tools must be changed and all GeoMoS data must be accessed over the new GeoMoS-API
(838783). The GeoMoS-API of GeoMoS version 7.1 provides full functionality to read all required
information from the GeoMoS database.
For more information about the GeoMoS-API check the manual after software installation.
In the transition period until 2019, direct access to the GeoMoS SQL Server database is still open
and the GeoMoS-API can be used in parallel to change all 3rd party software. In all releases after
2019 only data access through the GeoMoS-API will be provided. The direct access to the GeoMoS
database will be closed.

VAISALA WXT530 SERIES Added support of the Vaisala WXT530 series weather transmitter. The sensors, depending on the
SUPPORTED model, measure air pressure, temperature, humidity, rainfall, wind speed and wind direction.
All observation types are measured and recorded to the GeoMoS database when the measurement
is scheduled in the Measurement Cycle Editor.
The weather information supplements the geodetic and geotechnical measurements. It can be used
to calibrate other instrumentation (e.g. meteorological corrections to total station measurements).
GeoMoS can connect via the Sensor Manager to the Vaisala WXT530. A Vaisala WXT530 series
weather transmitters require 3 Sensor Licenses (article number 774 134).
The Vaisala sensors come with accessories (cables, mounting, etc.). Please check the Vaisala order
form.

Note: The Vaisala Weather Transmitter WXT530 series must be ordered directly from Vaisala:
http://www.vaisala.com/en/products/multiweathersensors/Pages/WXT530.aspx

GeoMoS Monitor

IMPORT OF SHAPE FILES It is now possible to import shape files into GeoMoS and push them to the GeoMoS Now! service to
be displayed on maps and images. Adding new data format to AnyData has created huge benefits
for monitoring in the mining and infrastructure industries. By using this new functionality, sched-
uled import of shape files, such as velocity or hazard maps, is now possible. These files can be
added as an additional layer to maps or images in GeoMoS Now! then analysed over time together
with other geodetic and geotechnical data.
A simple wizard has been added to GeoMoS Monitor to import shape files. Shape files can be
added to GeoMoS Monitor Sensor Editor as an additional sensor. To do this, open the Sensor Editor
and choose the Shape File Import to activate the wizard.

Page 36
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

After completing a simple setup, the shape file import can be added to the automatic measurement
cycle as any other sensor. After the shape file import, processed files are moved to the backup
folder.
For a successful shape file import it is necessary to have the following file formats in the import
folder: .shp, .shx and .dbf. If the listed mandatory files are missing, the import will not be carried
out.
It is useful to have a .prj (projection file) in order to display shape files on e.g. Google map. In case a
.prj file is needed, all shape files should be added to a Zip file.
Only one shape file data stream is allowed at a time. If multiple shape files are available in a folder,
use the precise identifier definition to differentiate between them.
The shape file import requires no special licensing option to be purchased. Only one sensor license
is used per shape file data stream.

SHAPE FILE IMPORT OVER If a user has an XLink API enabled in IDS Guardian software, a direct connection from GeoMoS to
IDS XLINK API Guardian using a special Sensor Editor wizard can be established. Prior to the wizard setup, commu-
nication between GeoMoS and Guardian has to be set. The Settings wizard will not open as long as
communication has not been established.

Page 37
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

This wizard differs slightly from the general shape file import wizard. Project information, such as
project creation, start and end date, and project description, is read directly from the Guardian
software. The user is offered a list of map types, e.g. displacement or hazard maps that can be im-
ported in GeoMoS. This list will depend on the settings in the Guardian software. The shape files
are calculated on-the-fly using the Time Interval setting. The shape file that is imported and dis-
played in GeoMoS will display the change with respect to the selected time interval. A separate im-
port has to be set up for different map types or time intervals.
Additionally, the shape files are stored in the GeoMoS database via an automatic measurement cy-
cle and then pushed to GeoMoS Now! service for viewing and analysis.

Other improvements and changes

▪ Note: The size of the images imported in GeoMoS Monitor is limited to 10 MB. Images
larger than this will not be imported and a message will be displayed. A maximum of 100
MB of images can be pushed to GeoMoS Now! in one data push interval.

GeoMoS Monitor

IMPORT OF IMAGES With the version 6.5 it is possible to import, store and distribute images in .png, .tif, .tiff .gif, .jpeg
and .jpg format within the automatic measurement cycle of GeoMoS Monitor. Images stored on
the local drive are imported automatically using a simple wizard. The image import has been added
as a new sensor in the Sensor Manager editor of GeoMoS Monitor. Each “sensor” can be added to
the measurement cycle with a defined time and frequency. Only one sensor license is needed for a
single image import sensor. No additional software option needs to be purchased.
Image import wizard consists of two pages where the most important parameters of the image im-
port are defined.

Page 39
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

It is important that images have a defined time stamp in their name, as they are used to define the
time stamp in the GeoMoS database.
Once imported, the images can be viewed in GeoMoS Analyzer and GeoMoS Now!*.

*The release of GeoMoS Now! with image viewing functionality will follow in March 2016.

DATABASE SIZE STATUS IN In the Status bar of GeoMoS Monitor the information about the size and the availability of database
STATUS BAR is added. This information is particularly useful in case of image import where the database can get
full quickly. This information shows if there is enough space in database or the database needs a
cleanup.

IMAGES IN ANALYZER The support of image import functionality has now been added to the GeoMoS Analyzer version
6.5. Using the menu Tools → Image Viewer all images can be viewed. The Image Viewer opens in
another window, allowing easier comparison with other graphs for faster analysis.

The user can choose between viewing all images and viewing images in a selected time period. The
time slider can be used to browse easily through the image history. Selecting Point and Sensor
enables fast switching between images sets.

OTHER IMPROVEMENTS ▪ The license count for CSV import in GeoMoS Monitor has been changed. Version 6.5
allows up to 10 import units (observation type per sensor) per single sensor license.
▪ For subsequent service packs and bug fixes following GeoMoS v6.3.0.160, please see the
section at the end of the next chapter.

6.5.0.72 (SP2) ▪ Automated Null Scan functionality has been added to the Scan Editor. Until now it was only
possible to obtain the scans and related deformation values for the scan areas with manually
defined null scans. These null scans are a reference for any future deformation calculation.
From GeoMoS version 6.5.0.72 it is possible to use automatic null scan functionality. Based on
the settings in the Scan Editor, the GeoMoS will create an automatic null scan. Other scan area
settings have to be defined as usual.

It is still highly recommended to choose the manual null scan creation because it provides the
verification of the reference measurement.

GeoMoS Monitor

GEOMOS ANYDATA GeoMoS Monitor introduces the new feature – GeoMoS AnyData – which allows you to import nu-
merical data from any sensor or any software provided in a CSV formatted file.

Numerical data from any sensor stored in CSV file format can be configured as a new sensor, and all
the software features assigned to a sensor and observations can be used. Features included are:
▪ Create new sensor,
▪ Assign sensor location,
▪ Define observation types,
▪ Assign limit checks and alarming,
▪ Import the observations automatically using the Measurement Cycle editor,
▪ Visualise and analyse data in GeoMoS Now!,
▪ Create reports and send them to multiple recipients.

A simple and flexible sensor wizard allows defining the import of any CSV file, regardless of the file
structure. The mandatory columns in the CSV file are Time/Date and at least one column with val-
ues.

Page 45
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

It is possible to import a CSV file containing the measurements for multiple sensors, e.g. a file con-
taining observations of the water level sensors for all the rivers in a region. All these sensor obser-
vations, if available, will be imported in an automatic measurement cycle process.

Import of CSV file enables the import of historical files. This is particularly useful for new projects
where observations from different sensors were stored previously in a file structure. This function-
ality also enables reprocessing; if the data for the same sensor, observation type and time stamp
are imported, the old value in the database will be re-written.

All defined observations from CSV files are stored in the GeoMoS database and provide another
storing location for valuable data. Although the CSV import provides the possibility to import the
observation with any measurement frequency, we advise caution because of possible performance
issues. Due to technical reasons, measurements with time stamps in milliseconds or higher will be
rounded to the nearest centisecond. This might lead to a situation of two measurements having the
same time stamp and might display as a double entry in database.

CSV import functionality is implemented using a simple licensing model. Only sensor licenses are
needed and no special option needs to be purchased. The number of sensor licenses depends on
the number of active sensors and observation types assigned to them.

Page 46
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

Sensor name Observation type Number of obser-

vations
Sensor A Temperature, pressure, hu- 3
midity
Sensor B Water level 1
Sensor C Energy consumption, height 2

Total number of sensor licenses 6

It is also possible to define sensors and observation types, however they should be kept inactive un-
til needed. A simple click changes the state from inactive to active. The licenses are recounted
based only on the active sensors and their observation types.

GEOMOS API GeoMoS introduces an API (Application Programming Interface) to connect to the GeoMoS
database. It is an easy-to-use interface, enabling the use of information from the GeoMoS database
in any other application. Therefore GeoMoS provides a slim webserver which replies to http
requests. No additional webserver is needed for this purpose. The result is delivered in XML
structure (Extensible Markup Language) or in JSON structure (JavaScript Object Notation). These
two structures make it easy to integrate the information with a desktop or web application.
Currently, functions included in GeoMoS API are:
▪ Get version of API
▪ Get all available commands
▪ Get active projects
▪ Get points of projects
▪ Get points in a defined polygon
▪ Get all results of points
▪ Get results of points in a defined epoch
▪ Get the last result of points

The GeoMoS result is the Easting, Northing, Height coordinates of a point and the displacements
with respect to the null measurement. This information can be used to plot timeline diagrams, dis-
placement vectors or trajectories of vectors.

MS60/TS60 SUPPORTED Added support of the new instruments from the Leica Nova Series.
▪ MS60 MultiStation
▪ TS60 Total Station

TS16 SUPPORTED Added support of the new instruments from the Leica Viva Series.
▪ TS16

OTHER IMPROVEMENTS ▪ Reduced minimal value of maximal age of aliases.

It is now possible to define the maximal age of aliases in the Virtual Sensor Editor to less
than 1 hour. Changing this input from integer to a floating number of hours allows us to
create virtual sensors for high-frequency applications. The minimal allowed value is 1s
(expressed in unit of hours).

▪ At times, the message "No answer from GeoMoS Controller” has been received within
timeout. Try restarting the Leica.GeoMoS.Controller service. If this problem continues,
please check the logfile and contact support. This occurs due to the measurement cycle
waiting to stop. This issue has been fixed.
▪ Improved managing of multiple connections to Campbell Dataloggers. Improved writing
of additional information in the log files. In the measurement cycle, starting interval for
reading different tables can now be different.

Service pack contents

6.3.0.167 The new temperature and pressure sensor TP meteo sensor RS485 is supported by GeoMoS
Monitor.
The new meteo sensor can easily be added to the automatic measurement cycle of GeoMoS
Monitor via the Sensor manager. The observed temperature and pressure can be used as an
observation in the monitoring system as well as to calibrate other instrumentation (e.g.
meteorological corrections to total station measurements). A single TP meteo sensor RS485
requires only one sensor license.
The TP meteo sensor RS485 uses the RS485 interface and must be combined with a RS485/RS232
converter to connect to the PC, ComBox or Comgate10.
The new sensor TP meteo sensor RS485 can be ordered using the article number 837 816. The
sensor comes equipped with a 7m open-end cable, which can be connected to the RS485/RS232
converter.

With the release of the new meteo sensor, the sales of the existing DTM STS sensor will be
discontinued. The following article numbers will be phased out:

667 726 DTM STS meteo sensor

764 328 GEV222

The old meteo sensor DTM STS will continue to be supported by future GeoMoS Monitor versions,
and can still be used in all existing or new monitoring projects.

Page 49
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

6.3.0.180 ▪ Push service to GeoMoS Now! has been updated. Customers that have had occasional
problems with sending data to the GeoMoS Now! cloud should see improvements.
▪ A new blunder check has been implemented for the scanning results.

Blunder check values can be defined to remove the large outliers and thereby false alarms.
These settings should not be too tight, otherwise the possible real result could be removed.
The valid values are in a range between minus 10 and plus 10 meters. The limit check will be
done on values which have passed the blunder check. Furthermore, only the values that have
passed the blunder check will be available for further use, e.g. calculations, virtual sensors, etc.
The number of filtered points is given in a message in the GeoMoS Monitor Message tab.

▪ The new observation "Median Deformation" has been added to scanning results. The median
deformation of a scan area for a given time stamp is now compared to the null measurement.
This functionality is particularly useful and advisable for small scan areas where it is expected
that the whole area undergoes the same deformation, for example parts of a road, parts of a
building (see image), etc. In this case we can eliminate unrealistic values (outliers) and
consider the whole scan area as a prism.

Page 50
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

▪ Since Monitor 6.0, a regression limit check also includes measurement values marked as
outliers, resulting in an increase of limit level exceeded messages. The regression check of
Monitor 6.3.0.180 no longer takes outlier values in calculation.
▪ The licensing problem when using the demo license with the released version of GeoMoS Moni-
tor (6.3.0.160) has been resolved.

process of the software.

GeoMoS Monitor

MULTIPLE ACTIVE PROJECTS It is now possible to run several active projects on one computer.

Running projects are marked with [*]

The sensor control, collection of data, computation and event management is setup per project,
making it possible to create and use several GeoMoS Monitor projects simultaneously. For each ac-
tive GeoMoS Monitor project a Windows Process “Leica.GeoMoS.Services.Sequencer.exe” will be
started. Acquiring measurements from geodetic and geotechnical sensors can be done in parallel.
There was no change in the licensing model of GeoMoS Monitor. Each active project requires a Ge-
oMoS basic license with all its options and enough sensor licenses.

TPS VOLTAGE Before every measurement cycle current voltage (power status) is read from the TPS instrument.
The voltage read-out is linked to the TPS point, therefore it can be used as an observation in “Vir-
tual Sensor Editor”, “Limit Class Editor” and can be analyzed in GeoMoS Monitor (Chart) and Geo-
MoS Now!.

Page 53
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

Instruments with firmware at least Viva or Nova are supported.

SPLITTER VIEW Main window of GeoMoS Monitor is split to two areas, accommodating the message view in the
lower part of the UI window. Messages can be now viewed and analyzed in every tab (separate
message tab removed), and compared to correlated data, status and graphs.

MESSAGE CONFIGURATOR Existing QueryAndPush.exe tool is fully integrated in “Message Configurator” in GeoMoS Monitor.
QUERY AND PUSH It allows querying data, writing the data to a file, pushing the data to a FTP server or sending them
via email. The integration implies that the existing QueryAndPush.exe as a separate tool will not be
available anymore. The implemented Database Query menu is displayed in the image below.

Page 54
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

After an upgrade to GeoMoS Monitor v6.2, it is necessary to configure again the

settings for query and push of the data.

CONDITION Existing condition handling has been improved in the new version of GeoMoS Monitor to meet the
diverse customer’s preferences.
Following triggers are adapted:
▪ Enable/disable triggers for each week day
▪ Update from earlier version: adapt or if not possible to adapt then default values are
used

In addition, the user interface has been simplified.

TIMELIMITED LICENSE The new license model has been introduced which targets the short-term monitoring projects. It is
now possible to order one or multiple 30-day GeoMoS Monitor licenses.

Article number

Page 55

The GeoMoS Monitor TimeLimited license offers 30 days GeoMoS Monitor including Option 1
(Computation), Option 2 (Limit checks and messaging) and 100 sensor licenses.
The number of TimeLimited licenses has to be defined when ordering, and the license cannot be
extended. Validity of the license starts as soon as the order is successfully executed.
The TimeLimited license includes the CCP during the defined period.

CHANGE FOR AUTO In GeoMoS Monitor versions up to 6.0 digital I/O was toggled by auto-acknowledge. If the auto-
ACKNOWLEDGE OF DIGITAL acknowledge was active, it would change the status of digital I/O every time it would be executed.
I/O From GeoMoS Monitor version 6.2 the digital I/O is not toggled by the auto-acknowledge. To toggle
any digital I/O a manual action in message configurator is required, even if the GeoMoS Monitor
project is running.
Selecting the digital I/O and pressing the “Test” will toggle this digital I/O.

VERSION COMPATIBILITY For more detailed information refer to the section “Version Compatibility”.
WITH GNSS SPIDER

VERSION COMPATIBILITY From July, 2013 onwards, Leica MonBox30 will be delivered with the corresponding GeoMoS
WITH MONBOX30 software versions.
Due to special storage requirements, the scanning functionality is not available for current MonBox
installations of GeoMoS.

GeoMoS Monitor

SCANNING AND IMAGING GeoMoS Monitor is the first software ever that integrates the scanning functionality in automatic
FUNCTIONALITY deformation monitoring. It provides the ideal interoperability in combining the point monitoring
with deformation monitoring of surface areas with high density of monitoring points. Additional im-
aging functionality complements the set by providing yet another information source for better de-
formation analysis.
GeoMoS Monitor extends the situation information using contactless scan data in combination with
TPS, GNSS, geotechnical and meteorological data, providing the most complete data collection in
monitoring application.

Easy definition of the scan area using the Scan Wizard.

Implemented Scan Wizard allows the image-assisted definition of scan areas using different param-
eter settings and different scan result types. Once defined, the scan area can be scanned manually
and via the automatic measurement cycle.
The new Leica Geosystems n.Vec Technology is used to define the null cloud to which all consecu-
tive manually or automatically measured point clouds will be compared. The maximal deformation
and deformation volume of defined scan areas are calculated automatically during the measure-
ment cycle. The n.Vec Technology is based on a principle of finite number of “patches” defining the
null cloud of the scan area surface. The calculation of the deformation of the measured point cloud
is based on normal vectors of the null cloud points intersecting the measured point cloud surface.
Leica GeoMoS Scanning functionality makes use of all current automatic functionalities such as au-
tomatic measurement cycle scheduling, real-time notification via e.g. SMS/email, automatic limit
level check, etc. In addition, embedded point cloud and image viewer assures powerful 3D

Page 60
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

visualisation and traceable history of deformations in the scanned area.

Result viewer shows the result colour-coded point cloud with deformation on a dam.

Due to the large amount of data produced by scanning, GeoMoS stores data also outside the data-
base structure. This includes raw scans and scan result clouds. Important configuration information
such as null cloud, as well as numerical and graphical results is stored in the database.
Currently the scanning functionality only supports the Leica NOVA MS50 MultiStation sensor. The
sensor setup is done in a traditional way and is a prerequisite to use this sensor for scanning appli-
cations.
GeoMoS Monitor Scanning functionality overview:
- Scanning functionality is available as a GeoMoS option, and can be ordered with the arti-
cle number 807 098.
- Image assisted remote learning and easy configuration of scan areas, even from the office
by using the newly integrated Scan Editor and Scan Area Wizard.
- Automated scanning and analysis: Scan of multiple dedicated scan areas with defined
measurement interval. No system operator required to analyse the scan data.
- Automatic limit check for deformation inside the scan area and instant information distri-
bution.
- Automatic computation of colour coded deformation cloud.
- Automatic distribution of all results to GeoMoS Analyser and GeoMoS Web platform.

Recommendations for scanning applications

Page 61
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

Several notices should be taken into account when using the Scanning functionality with the Geo-
MoS:
- It is not advisable to scan highly reflective surfaces, such as glass, mirrors, metal. Avoid
scanning through the glass, because the raindrops and dust can cause many missing
points of the measured cloud, which can cause bad calculation conditions.
- Make sure there are enough measured scan points by choosing the scan area grid of
5000-100000 points. Make sure to have more than 1000 points if possible. Optimal num-
ber of points is a pre-requisite for successful deformation calculations.
- Use realistic and avoid undefined scan objects such as sky, water and vegetation.
- Use realistic limits for deformation limit check, and consider the accuracy of the reflector-
less measurement of the used sensor.

TPS NOVA SUPPORTED Added support of the Leica Nova Series.

▪ The following Leica Nova Series TPS are supported: TM50 0.5”, TM50 1”, TM50 I 0.5”, TS50 I 1”,

update existing SQL Server 2005 to the new SQL Server 2008. The SQL server can be
updated manually.
▪ For updates where Microsoft SQL Server 2000 or SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE)
was installed, it is not possible to run the GeoMoS installation before uninstalling the
current SQL server or updating the SQL server manually to the new SQL Server 2005 /
2008 Express.
This step is required because in the near future the Microsoft support for the SQL Server 2000 will
come to an end.

Please also note the special installation advice “Upgrade Information” for upgrades to version 5.3.
Do not proceed with the installation unless you have read and are confident that you have
understood this advice.

GEOMOS WEB DATA PUSH The new “Data push to GeoMoS Web” is improved since GeoMoS Monitor v5.2. All monitoring data
from GeoMoS Monitor to the GeoMoS Web server is now transferred via “https only” over port 80
and 443. This new data transfer automatically applies for all new GeoMoS Web customers.
Customers using the previously used data transfer who update to the new GeoMoS Monitor ver-
sion v5.3, stay on the data transfer via “FTP” over port 21, 80, 443 and 30000…31000. It is possible
to change to the “https only” data push with assistance by the Leica Heerbrugg support team.

VERSION COMPATIBILITY From September, 2012 onwards, Leica MonBox30 will be delivered with the corresponding
WITH MONBOX30 GeoMoS software versions

GeoMoS Monitor

GEOMOS MONITOR The GeoMoS Monitor is sub-divided into a graphical user interface and a Windows service, ensuring
MEASUREMENT CYCLE RUNS a 100% uptime for the runtime of the critical automatic measurement cycle, which is responsible
for the sensor control, data acquisition and storage.
AS A WINDOWS SERVICE
Running the GeoMoS Monitor measurement cycle as a Windows Service has several advantages:
▪ The new service runs without the GeoMoS Monitor graphical user interface being open.
▪ The new service will automatically launch whenever your computer system boots and re-
starts in case of any Windows crashes.
▪ The new service starts before a user logs on to Windows and is fully functional.
▪ The new service will always run no matter which user is logged-in to the computer.
▪ By default, the new service is executed with the local system account user. No special
user rights from your IT are required.

Page 65
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

▪ The new service fulfils advanced IT requirements

▪ Much faster GeoMoS Monitor GUI when pressing OK, Cancel etc. for multiple sensor con-
nections
The new GeoMoS Monitor Windows Services are listed in the Control Panel > Administrative Tool >
Services as Leica.GeoMoS.Services.Controller.

INCREASED INTERVAL FOR The interval for “long time limit checks” is increased from 100 hours to 3 months (2500 hours) to
THE LONG TIME LIMIT CHECK enable limit checks on long term trends.

USE CASE For several monitoring installations the limit check over longer time periods offers certain ad-
vantages. For example, a monitoring customer measures with a total station to monitoring points
and expecting an object movement of 10 mm per month. This expected small movement may be in
some circumstances very close to the measurement noise of a sensor. Increasing the limit check in
this case from 10 mm / month to 30 mm / quarter reduces the risk of false alarms.

SORT POINTS IN POINT To increase the measurement cycle efficiency and to reduce unnecessary wear on the total station
GROUPS BY HZ ANGLE motors, the points within point groups are ideally measured in an optimum order, e.g. based on the
Hz angle.
The Point Editor dialog is extended with a new column per point group to enable an automatic sort-
ing by the Hz angle.

This new function is active by default, but the original sort order of the points within a point group
(see Assigned Points) is not overwritten.

EXAMPLE The sorting on the basis of the Hz angle is determined by GeoMoS Monitor on pressing the Start
button.
The Hz angles are computed with the latest valid setup coordinate of each total station and the

Page 66
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

actual measured coordinate of each point. Each point group starts with the point that has the big-
gest Hz difference to the previous point and not with the point closest to the azimuth north or the
system orientation.
Optimized point group order:

ENHANCEMENTS WHEN The new GeoMoS v5.3 comes with two extensions for learning new points in the Point Editor dia-
LEARN NEW POINTS log:
▪ The list box with the “selected TPS sensor” is always updated on the basis of the selected
point in the left hand side of this dialog.
▪ New added points can be listed separately in the Point Group Editor dialog away from all
points. This ensures that new points can be easily added to a point group.

SELECTED TPS SENSOR In cases where a monitoring system works with multiple total stations, this new feature makes the
“re-learn” of existing points simpler. Based on the point group a point is assigned to and the total
station that measures this point, the list box “selected TPS sensor” is automatically updated.

The automatic list box update is interrupted for the time the Point Group dialog is open, in case the
customer selects a different total station.

Note: It is not possible to update the list box “selected TPS sensor” in case a point is measured with
more than one total station.

NOT YET ASSIGNED POINTS It is possible to display these points in a separate list to ensure new points can be easily added to a
IN THE POINT GROUP point group.

ABILITY TO VIEW ALL Before GeoMoS v5.2, it was not possible to view any GeoMoS Monitor configuration dialog when
DIALOGS WHEN the measurement cycle was running. To display and check any configuration it was always neces-
sary to stop the complete automatic measurement cycle.
MEASUREMENT CYCLE IS
RUNNING With v5.3 we added the ability to now view all GeoMoS Monitor dialogs, even when the measure-
ment cycle is running. The dialogs can be opened in a new non-editable mode. Any verifications and
checks on the existing configuration are easily made without any interruptions to the system. Un-
necessary data gaps are avoided.
Important: Edits to the GeoMoS Monitor configuration dialogs are only possible when the auto-
matic measurement cycle is stopped.

USE CASE With this new feature, the customer or support member is able to display the system configuration
while the automatic measurement cycle is running. To verify important monitoring system settings
it is no longer required to stop the complete automatic measurement cycle.

IMPORT / EXPORT On request of many customers we have moved the import and export functionality from GeoMoS
Analyzer to GeoMoS Monitor.

Note: The import is only available when the measurement cycle is stopped. The export is always
possible. Network drives are not supported.

IMPROVED MESSAGES A new message has been added to enhance the management of large databases:
▪ Maximum database size almost reached
Every free SQL Server Edition comes with pre-defined database size limit (e.g. 2005 4GB, 2008 8GB).
In case the database size limit is reached, the system reacts with unpredictable behavior that can-
not be automatically managed by GeoMoS. Therefore, we implemented a new GeoMoS message
that is triggered in case the size of the database reaches 90% of the maximum available size.
The new message can appear 1 minute after the start of the measurement cycle and from then on

Page 68
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

every 12 hours if the database is not reduced.

The database can be reduced with the menu Tools > Shrink database. First make a backup of the
database, delete the non-required database entries and then shrink the database itself to release
database memory.

Important: With GeoMoS v5.3, this new database check is done even before any previous version is
uninstalled.

LOGFILE IMPROVEMENTS ▪ All GeoMoS logfiles including the Sensor_Log.txt are now automatically written to the lo-
cal data path by each connected sensor. After the maximum size per file (10MB) is
reached, a new logfile will be written. After 10 logfiles the oldest file will be deleted.

IMPROVED ENTITLEMENT For customers using multiple GeoMoS licenses within a centralized local license server, in the past it
MANAGEMENT was not possible to assign separate options to a specific GeoMoS Monitor project.
With the GeoMoS v5.3 license assignments can be done in File > Projects > Project Properties:

Only the functionality that is assigned to a specific project is checked out when the automatic
measurement cycle is started.
The use of Demo, Evaluation and Training licenses in combination with full GeoMoS license is now
supported within a single local license server.

MINOR IMPROVEMENTS ▪ Prevent the Edit Mode in the Point Viewer

▪ The export to GeoMoS Adjustment allows a sensor selection to be defined. Before, all
points of a project have been exported automatically to the GeoMoS XML files. With the
latest version it is possible to control the exported raw data based on the total station.
▪ Released Russian version of GeoMoS Monitor / Analyzer
▪ Static IP address for ComBoxes

COMPATIBILITY NOTES FOR ▪ From GeoMoS v5.3 there is no default project “GeoMoS Database” created anymore
OLDER VERSIONS OF when creating a new project in GeoMoS Monitor. This will affect the defined limit classes.
GEOMOS ▪ If a new project is created, no default limit class is defined. When opening the Limit Class
Editor for the first time, it is possible to create the “default limit class”.

Page 69
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

▪ If a database with a modified “default limit class” is imported in a project with an already
defined default limit class, these settings cannot be overtaken from the previous monitor-
ing system and the "default limit class" must be manually re-adjusted.

BUG FIXES ▪ Solved the issue to store some angle / time units persistent in the user interface. The
stored data was not affected.

GeoMoS Analyzer

CHANGES ▪ The import and export functionality is moved from GeoMoS Analyzer to GeoMoS Monitor
▪ The Projects dialog is slightly changed due the new software architecture with sub-di-
vided graphical user interface and Windows Services.

GEOMOS ADJUSTMENT

COMPATIBILITY ▪ This version of GeoMoS is compatible with GeoMoS Adjustment v1.6.

GeoMoS Monitor

TPS VIVA SUPPORTED Added support of the latest robotic total stations TS15.
▪ The TS15 A, TS15 G, TS15 P and TS15 I are supported

Page 72
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

▪ The EDM mode Standard (STD) 1 mm + 1.5 ppm is available and supported with GeoMoS
▪ The ATR modes Normal, Low Vis and Automatic are available and supported with GeoMoS
▪ The TS15 A, TS15 G and TS15 P support the TargetCapture
▪ The “TS15 I” is equipped with a wide-angle camera (OVC feature) that captures a high resolu-
tion image of exactly what the total station sees.

Notes:
▪ The TS15 is suited for temporary monitoring installations or low intensity monitoring. The TS15
has a maintenance interval of 6 months or 500 hours of motor usage.
▪ The TS15 has a normal ATR field of view of 1° 30’ and an ATR small field of view of approx 30’.
▪ The GeoCOM Imaging License for TS15 (article number 781 349) is included in Leica GeoMoS
Monitor and TS15 from the next SmartWorx Viva Release onwards. The application authenti-
cates the GeoCOM Imaging License and the GeoCOM Robotic License (article number 781
351) automatically.

Important: The TS12 total stations are not supported via GeoMoS.

OVERVIEW IMAGE GeoMoS supports the remote use of the wide-angle camera picture of the TS15 I.
Leica GeoMoS Monitor can capture the Overview image via the “Point Editor” dialog:
1. Use the “Posit To” button to make the currently selected total station position to (aim to)
the currently selected point
2. Press the “TargetCapture” button on the right hand side to capture the Overview camera
picture with the required resolution.
Small 640x480; medium 1280x960; high 2560x1920
3. The picture will be stored on your local drive
4. The picture will be displayed in a separate window
5. Use the mouse to click to a position inside the picture. Double click to posit (aim) the total
station at the currently selected point

Notes:
▪ All total stations without an overview camera will capture the telescopic camera image. A
posit inside the telescopic camera is not possible.
▪ Crosshair: GeoMoS only uses a coarse crosshair that is approximately in the field of view
of the telescope. GeoMoS does not take into account a valid distance measurement to
resolve the parallax. The telescope crosshair and the GeoMoS overview image crosshair
might slightly differ, especially in close ranges. An ATR measurement is possible.

USE CASE ▪ Obstructions in the line of sight can be inspected remotely, avoiding safety concerns in
high-risk environments.

Page 73
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

▪ In installations where the access to the total station is not easy, but new prisms have
been added to the system, the camera picture can be used to posit the telescope close to
new points. Then the ATR is able to detect the prisms and to take a high precision 3D
measurement.
▪ The camera can be used to take images of survey relevant objects for documentation
purposes.

VAISALA WXT520 Added support of the Vaisala WXT520 weather station. The sensor measures air temperature, rela-
SUPPORTED tive humidity, barometric air pressure, wind speed, wind direction, rain and hail intensity.
All observation types are measured and recorded to the GeoMoS database when the measurement
is scheduled in the Measurement Cycle Editor.
▪ The observation temperature, relative humidity, barometric air pressure, wind speed and
direction represent the current site condition.
▪ The observations rain and hail represent the rain and hail intensity as a one minute run-
ning average in 10 second steps. For example, the sensor can measure every 10 seconds
the rain and hail intensity (rain with [mm/h] and hail with hits per hour [hits/h]) over the
last minute. A measurement interval of 1 minute is recommended.
The weather information supplements the geodetic and geotechnical measurements. It can be used
to calibrate other instrumentation (e.g. meteorological corrections to total station measurements).
GeoMoS can connect via the Sensor Manager to the Vaisala WXT520. A Vaisala WXT520 requires 3
Sensor Licenses (article number 774 134).
The Vaisala sensor comes with accessories (cables, mounting, etc.). Please check the Vaisala order
form.

Note: The Vaisala Weather Transmitter WXT520 must be ordered directly from Vaisala:
http://www.vaisala.com/en/products/multiweathersensors/Pages/WXT520.aspx

POWER SAVING MODE This new option can be used to switch off the total station during the measurement pause to save
power.
If this checkbox is set, GeoMoS will switch off the power on the total station in cases where no
measurement is scheduled and the measurement pause is greater than the warm up time. The
warm up time guarantees precise measurements. GeoMoS will switch on the power on the total
station in advance of the next scheduled measurement.

These new settings are located on the new TPS Properties → Power tab.

Notes: This option is only recommended when the energy supply is limited. All installations with a
permanent energy supply should not use this option.
This option is only recommended when the measurement pause is greater than 1 hour.

Page 74
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

USE The new power saving mode can be used in remote installations. For example landslides, where the
CASE energy supply is limited due to the use of an autonomous energy supply, such as solar panels or
fuel cells.

SCREEN ILLUMINATION GeoMoS can remotely control the total station screen illumination to allow more convenient work-
ing in monitoring installations (e.g. inhabited areas).

This new setting is located in the new Sensor Manger > Theodolite Parameters dialog. Per default =
active
This new option can be used to switch off the screen illumination during the automatic measure-
ment mode to avoid that the total station attracts attention e.g. in urban city installations during
night etc. At any time the automatic measurement cycle is stopped or any keyboard button is
pressed, GeoMoS switches the screen illumination on. The configured onboard screen illumination
settings (CONFIGURE Lights, Display, Beeps, Text) are ignored whenever the GeoMoS setting Screen
Illumination OFF is active.
Note: Only TM30 and TS30 with FW 8.50 are supported.

NEW RESTART SEQUENCE The old “Reset TPS Before Normal Group” setting has been replaced with two new total station re-
start settings:

Reboot Whenever Commu- If this option is set, GeoMoS will restart the total station in any
nication Fails case where the total station does not respond properly to Geo-
MoS.
Per default = active
This function should only be used in setups with stable communi-
cation lines.
Reboot At Regular Inter- If this option is set, GeoMoS will restart the total station on a reg-
vals Before Any Group ular basis to avoid e.g. problems with instable firmware on the
total station.
Per default = not active
GeoMoS will wait with the restart of the total station until the
next group is scheduled. The restart does not interrupt any run-
ning point group. The restart is done before any next point group
starts.
This function is independent from the communication line and
can be used for both, stable and non-stable communication lines.

Page 75
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

These new settings are located on the new TPS Properties → Power tab.

Note: For most installations the default settings are sufficient.

Page 76
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

REBOOT AT REGULAR As an example, a “Free Station” and “Normal” group is scheduled on an hourly basis starting at
INTERVALS BEFORE ANY 00:50. At midnight when the restart is scheduled, the “Free Station” group is running:
GROUP

GeoMoS will wait with the pro-active restart of the total station until the “Free Station” group is fin-
ished. In this example the restart takes place just before the “Normal” group.

Important: Customers that had the following Windows Registry setting configured must update to
the new settings:
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Leica Geosystems\Leica GeoMoS\Projects\<pro-
jectname>\SequenceManager ResetTheoWheneverPingFails
The old Windows Registry key is not supported anymore.

CORRECTION GROUP “Free Station” and “Distance Intersection” group updates can be limited based on user defined
QUALITY CHECKS quality verification. This option is used to avoid, that control groups that do not match the quality
criteria are used to correct adjacent monitoring groups as “Normal” and “Special”. The existing
quality checks have been extended:

The new options set the maximum accepted standard deviation of the calculated coordinates. If
the standard deviation does not match the check, than the complete “Free Station” or “Distance
Intersection” result is set to invalid.

Page 77
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

SUSPEND “NORMAL” / The "Normal" or "Special" group properties (groups with moving object points) have been extended
“SPECIAL” GROUPS with a new setting:

Do not measure group If this option is selected, then the system will temporarily sus-
when corrections are older pend the "Normal" or "Special" group from the measurement cy-
than xx hours cle when the defined total station corrections do not match the
configured quality.
per default = not active
In cases where total station corrections that do not match the specified quality are used to update
the adjacent "Normal" or "Special" groups, it may happen that the precision for these groups is de-
creased.
The existing messages:
▪ Reference group out of tolerance and
▪ Not enough measurements for reference group calculation
must be monitored very carefully in case the new setting is activated for any reference point group
(free station, distance intersection, orientation, vz correction, ppm). It is recommended to assign
the message listed above to an action e.g. email or SMS to be able to react to this situation in time.
At any time a normal or special group is suspended the new message “Station correction not valid
or too old! Skip normal/special group” occurs.
The advantage of this setting is that only high precision "Normal" or "Special" groups are measured
and stored in the database. The chance of outliers is decreased and faulty limit check messages are
eliminated. The clear disadvantage is that in the case that the control point properties are not ful-
filled; GeoMoS will not measure any "Normal" or "Special" groups.

NEW TPS READ OUT DIALOG The existing TPS Read Out dialog has been updated and many new total station onboard parame-
ters can now be remotely read and stored to a file:
▪ Instrument type with serial number ▪ Refraction and corrections
▪ Firmware version ▪ Offsets
▪ Prism information ▪ Power mode
▪ PPM values

In addition, it is now possible to read out the EDM signal strength:

Page 78
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

To access the updated dialog, go to Tools → TPS Read Out

USE CASE The new TPS Read Out allows to remotely read out the necessary total stations onboard parame-
ters without being on site. It is recommended to store these settings e.g. before and after the total
station is sent to service.

NEW SWITCHBOX TEST It is now easier to make basic check-up tests during monitoring installation via a new Switchbox
DIALOG Test dialog. The dialog verifies the hardware function between total stations and the switchbox.

To access the new dialog got to Tools → TPS Switchbox Test

To guarantee the correct functioning of the switchbox, it is recommended to perform these tests
during the initial installation and after the change of an instrument (e.g. because of service etc.).
Important: Do not forget to turn on the switchbox relay before leaving the dialog with Power On.

NEW MESSAGES The limit level messages have been extended with new messages to indicate a change to the next
limit level:
▪ Absolute limit level changed
▪ Short time limit level changed
▪ Long time limit level changed
▪ Regression time limit level changed
These messages only occur if the limit level increases from one level to the next.
Messages for limit levels now have two levels. The “limit level changed” message is only recorded
once, when a new limit level is reached. Whereas the message "limit level exceeded", is recorded
together with every measurement or result that exceeds the set limit level.

Page 79
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

In cases where the observation scatters around a certain limit level e.g. due measurement noise,
this new message is only recorded once whereas the messages "limit level exceeded" (message
type: 4, 5, 34, 35, 52-69) is recorded together with every measurement or result that exceeds the
set limit level.
This message occurs only if the limit level increases. This message does not occur when the limit
level decreases.
In cases where the observation frequently results in different limit levels, this message is only rec-
orded once when a new limit level occurs in the increasing direction.

USE CASE For example, the existing limit level messages “absolute limit level exceeded” are suitable for moni-
toring system providers to continuously check the deformation health of a structure.
The new limit level messages “absolute limit level changed, level 3, movement +0.09m, tolerance
+0.05m” can be assigned to end customers that should only be informed of critical situations, for
example the change of monitoring points to a certain limit level.

Important: Customers that had the following Windows Registry setting configured must update to
the new settings:
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Leica Geosystems\Leica GeoMoS\Projects\<pro-
jectname>\EventManager\Heimgartner
▪ TriggerLimitMessagesOnlyIfLevelChanged
▪ TimeOutInMinutes
The old Windows Registry keys are not supported anymore.

NEW CRITERIA FOR ACTIONS Added support of new criteria for the Message Configurator dialog.
The existing GeoMoS Monitor dialog lists on the left hand side all available system messages (e.g.
point not found, limit level exceeded, etc.) and on the right hand side the user defined actions (e.g.
application, email, SMS, digital out, database query).

Page 80
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

It is possible to assign multiple messages to a single action. Based on the combination of the mes-
sages and for an action it is possible to define a certain condition.
With the existing GeoMoS version there was no differentiation within a condition if different mes-
sages had been assigned to a single action.
With the new GeoMoS version the existing conditions have been extended by a new criteria.
▪ Message related
▪ Point related
The criteria allows you to define options for the combination of messages, action and it’s condition.

These new settings are located in the Configuration → Message Configurator → Conditions dialog.
By default the new checkboxes are not activated.

EXAMPLE 1 As an example, the “Absolute limit check level 1”, “level 2” and “level 3” is assigned to a SMS. None
criteria checkbox and the Trigger On Every 5th message is activated. The monitoring system per-
forms measurements as scheduled and records all messages to the system. The monitoring system
counts the defined messages of all points until the 5th message occurs.

The 5th message of the three message types and all points is now “Absolute limit check level 1”. The
system sends a SMS with “level 1” at 11:47:53 to the responsible staff. An issue on the monitoring

Page 81
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

site might be underestimated and it is not clear that there have already been bigger movements
“level 2” or “level 3”on other points.
Note: This is example is identical to the functionality of all GeoMoS versions before v 5.2.
Example 2 explains how to differentiate between single messages before an action is triggered.

EXAMPLE 2 As an example, the “Absolute limit check level 1”, “level 2” and “level 3” is assigned to a SMS. Now
the message related checkbox and the Trigger On Every 5th message is activated. The monitoring
system performs measurements as scheduled and records all messages to the system. The monitor-
ing system counts the defined messages of all points per message “level 1”, “level 2” or “level 3”.

The identical situation as in example 1 does not trigger any action.

The 5th message of all points and per message, “Absolute limit check level 3”, now sends an SMS
with “level 3” to the responsible staff. It is clear that there are less messages of “level 1” or “level
2” in the system and only the set number of 10 messages “level 3” triggered an action.

The criteria “point related” is very similar to “message related”. An action is triggered per point and
not per message.
The combination of “point related” and “message related” checks both options before it triggers an
action.

USE CASE With the existing GeoMoS version there was no option to trigger actions based on single message
types e.g. “Absolute limit check level 1” and a single point. The new criteria offers an additional op-
tion. The new criteria exactly allows to distinguish between a message type and a single point. The
customer has the possibility to monitor the events for special points more precise.

Note: The Message Configurator dialog with the Conditions is very flexible. Some combinations
may not be valid. For example, any message type that is not point related (e.g. power failure) will
be not affected from the new criteria.

Important: Customers that had the following Windows Registry setting configured must update to
the new settings:

NEW BAROMETRIC METEO Next to the existing meteo corrections (no correction, temperature/pressure, reference distance
CORRECTION and multiple temperature/pressure) a new barometric method has been added.

The temperature and pressure measurements from a single meteorological sensor will be used to
correct the measured distances. In addition, the height difference between the total station and
the measured point will be applied to the temperature and pressure (= barometric correction). The
meteo sensor next to the total station will be used.
An approximate of the international barometric height formula is used.
The new barometric meteo correction can be selected in the TPS Properties → Calculations tab.

USE CASE The new barometric meteo correction is a very valuable option in monitoring installations with long
distance measurements and a large height difference between the total station and the measured
prism, for example land slide or volcano monitoring.

OTHER IMPROVEMENTS ▪ The default value for the TPS and GNSS blunder tolerance is reduced from 10m to 1m

Page 83
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

▪ The GeoMoS Support Tool now works on 64bit computers

▪ The TPS1200 total stations now support both ATR Normal mode and ATR LowVis mode
within GeoMoS
▪ The QueryAndPush feature can now email files
▪ Bug fixed that caused mix of English and German in GeoMoS Monitor
▪ Bug fixed that caused in some installations that the GNSS blunder tolerance was not
stored due to a missing Trigger in the GeoMoS database
▪ Manual GeoMoS XML files can be created with epochs before the year 2000
▪ The regression limit computation includes now the latest measurement

GeoMoS Analyzer

SMOOTHING All GeoMoS Analyzer graphs now support smoothing with a new algorithm. The new smoothing al-
gorithm is based on a median filter that allows the selection of a smoothing factor with a filter
length. The amount of data is not reduced; it is only smoothed according to the available data and
filter length.
The screenshot below shows GNSS raw data with a position every 10 seconds and a filter length of
1 hour:

The customer can select the smoothing type (on, off, both) and the appropriate filter length in
every graph tab (Displacements, Vector and Multiple Graphs tab).

Important: The previous “Fritsch Filter” and the “Velocity” tab is removed.

Page 84
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

OTHER IMPROVEMENTS ▪ The “Site Map” now supports the selection of the positive and negative direction of the
Cartesian coordinates to fit for example, maps in the southern hemisphere as e.g. South
Africa.
▪ Bug fixed that the radio buttons for the graphic smoothing allowed multiple selections

GeoMoS Adjustment

OVERVIEW Leica GeoMoS Adjustment v1.6 is an update to the Leica GeoMoS Adjustment 1.2 and 1.5 (build
1.2.250). It requires a valid CCP (not expiring before August, 15 2011).

INTRODUCTORY GUIDE The GeoMoS Adjustment – An introductory guide has been updated with the latest settings.
The section 5 GeoMoS Monitor includes additional tips and requirements for a practical setup of
GeoMoS Monitor and GeoMoS Adjustment.
Please download the updated introductory guide v1.1 from the Leica Geosystems homepage or
contact your monitoring support team.
www.leica-geosystems.com/geomosadjustment --> Downloads tab

INSTRUMENT DATABASE A new instrument database has been added to the menu and project dialog. This new functionality
allows selecting an instrument type with a user-defined specification.
GeoMoS Adjustment automatically retrieves from GeoMoS XML files the required a priori standard
deviation of sensors. These values are based on the Leica technical specification. In special condi-
tions these a priori standard deviations can differ from the real situation and for example, the
sigma o value of the computation is outside the 0.7-1.3 boundary.
With the new user-defined a priori values the stochastic model of the network can be optimized.

PROJECT ENHANCEMENTS Two new settings have been added to the project dialog
▪ Additional tab: Output angular units → Select between Degree 360° or Grad 400gon
▪ Management tab: Add new points to first epoch

GRAPHIC CARD DRIVER With recent support cases we have discovered that an outdated graphic card driver may cause
problems with the functionality of the GeoMoS Adjustment software. A new “GeoMoS Adjust-
ment.log” file has been implemented to identify problems with outdated graphic card drivers.

LANGUAGES The new GeoMoS Adjustment version is prepared to be easily translated into different languages
via XML files.
Select from the menu Home, Menu, Change current language… to switch between available lan-
guages.

VERSION COMPATIBILITY For more detailed information refer to the section “Version Compatibility”.
WITH GNSS SPIDER

GENERAL FIRMWARE SmartWorx Version 8.00 for System1200 version contains two major improvements with regards to
IMPROVEMENTS FOR TPS the measurement performance and the overall system stability. For this reason we strongly recom-
mend to upgrade all System1200 TPS instruments to SmartWorx Version 8.00. In order to easily fa-
INSTRUMENTS cilitate this general upgrade recommendation the maintenance date is remained on 23.October
2009 for SmartWorx Version 8.00.
The first improvement relates to the amount of successful ATR measurements, for instance in per-
manent measurement installations. In some reported cases the ATR measurement process was ran-
domly not executed although the prism was visible in the telescope and ATR field of view. In the
Telescope firmware 4.91, which is part of the SmartWorx Version 8.00 package, a improved sensor
communication robustness results in an increased number of successful measurements.
In a second improvement the system stability and database robustness of TPS1200+ and TS30 /
TM30 instruments has been significantly improved. By this measure the likelihood of system shut-
downs will be reduced.

New software licensing

NEW SOFTWARE LICENSING Leica Geosystems has changed its existing software licensing from software projection keys (don-
gle), to a new system based on license activation.
The new software licensing …
▪ no longer requires any dongle shipments
▪ allows instant upgrades of additional purchased software options
▪ allows self-service for customers with Leica myWorld to download the Entitlement Certifi-
cate
▪ provides centralized license management for customers with a local license server
▪ allows easy use of multiple software products on the same PC without any dongle issues
▪ is future proofed and very flexible

INTRODUCTION & Leica Geosystems provides a detailed manual that explains the new Leica Software Licensing and
INSTALLATION guides you step-by-step through the new software installation process.
Please download the Introduction & Installation manual from the Leica Geosystems homepage or
contact your monitoring support team.
www.leica-geosystems.com/geomos → select the Download tab
This manual does not contain specific GeoMoS information.
Please finish reading the New software licensing section for specific information relating to the cur-
rent GeoMoS installations that effect the new software licensing.

LICENSE MODELS Leica Geosystems offers two different License Models matching the different user requirements:
▪ Node-locked
▪ Floating
Leica GeoMoS only uses Floating Licenses.
Floating licenses can be shared between multiple users working on different PCs within the same

Page 87
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

network. A Local License Server running within the network manages the floating licenses.

USE CASE A Local License Server manages that the number of simultaneously used licenses does not exceed
the total number of purchases licenses. If no more licenses are available, the user is notified and
has to wait until another user finishes the license use.
The Local License Server can be installed on either a normal PC or a dedicated server.

The setup above shows a Local License Server. The management of the Local License Server is done
via the separate tool, CLM Administrator Server.
Per software product an Entitlement ID is activated on the Local License Server.
Entitlement ID Software products
1 00101-33333-33333-33333-AE99F GeoMoS Monitor
GeoMoS Sensor Licenses
2 00101-44444-44444-44444-AE99F GeoMoS Analyzer
3 00101-55555-55555-55555-AE99F GeoMoS Adjustment
4 00101-66666-66666-66666-AE99F GeoMoS Monitor
GeoMoS Sensor Licenses
A Local License Server steers the number of simultaneously used licenses. Therefore GeoMoS Sen-
sor Licenses (article number 774 134) or GeoMoS Analyzer (article number 774 120) can be shared
easily within projects.

ENTITLEMENT ID The Entitlement ID is the key to the software product and replaces the dongle.
The Entitlement ID is the key to the initial license activation and the re-ordering of additional soft-
ware options or CCP’s.
The Entitlement ID consists of 25 alphanumeric numbers, for example
A1234-B5678-C9012-D3456-E7890

▪ The Entitlement ID for a software product never changes and should be kept in a safe
place.

▪ Do not forget to re-host your Entitlement ID before you intend to change your operating
system or format your PC hard disk.

Page 88
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

ACTIVATION OF GEOMOS For the initial installation and activation of Leica GeoMoS an Internet connection is required. The
SOFTWARE Entitlement ID must be entered during the installation of GeoMoS.
Once installed and activated this internet connection is no longer required. It is only required for
activating additional purchased software options or software maintenance (CCP’s).
All subsequent orders like maintenance contract extensions, additional options, etc. are linked to
the same Entitlement ID by the adding of additional products to the Entitlement. This follows the
concept one Entitlement ID per product and PC. Each new product must be activated first for get-
ting the additional license rights.
The entire Entitlement ID is activated. It is not possible to activate particular products out of the En-
titlement ID (no partial fulfillment).

MAINTENANCE CONCEPT Software maintenance entitles a customer to free of charge software updates within a given time
period. GeoMoS includes software maintenance of 90 days after the software order. Software
maintenance can be extended by ordering Customer Care Packages with durations of 1, 2 or more
years.
Note: Expired software maintenance does not stop the usage of the software. It is not an expiring
license. An expired maintenance only prevents the use of newer software versions.

Monitor changes and improvements

TM30 AND TS30 Added support for the latest robotic total stations TM30 and TS30.

LEICA MONITORING The Leica TM30 forms one component of a unique Monitoring solution, which seamlessly
SOLUTIONS integrates total stations, GNSS receivers and antennas, geotechnical sensors, software and IT
communication infrastructure.

Leica GeoMoS software provides a highly flexible automatic deformation monitoring system that is
able to combine geodetic, geotechnical and meteorological sensors to match the needs of your
monitoring project, whether it is large or small, temporary or permanent.

EDM MODES The following EDM modes are supported together with GeoMoS Monitor to achieve the highest
possible accuracy and reliability of a measurement:
▪ Standard (STD) Single measurement with 2.7 s measuring time and 1 mm +
1 ppm
▪ Precise (PRCS) Single measurement with 7 s measuring time and 0.6 mm +
1 ppm
Up to 500 meters
▪ Automatic Combination of the Standard and Precise EDM modes
within GeoMoS Monitor.
For slope distances < 500 meters the EDM mode “Precise”
will be used automatically.
For slope distances > 500 meters the EDM mode
“Standard” will be used automatically.
Note: For distances > 500 meters, the use of the EDM mode “Precise” decreases, because the
measurement signal is highly influenced by the atmosphere. Therefore, for distances > 500 meters
the EDM mode “Standard” is efficient. In addition, the EDM mode “Precise” can be less reliable for
long distance measurements.

Page 101
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

ATR MODES The TM30 includes SmartEye vision technology to automatically measure targets up to 3000 meters
with millimetre accuracy. This advanced technology enables large areas to be monitored with a
single instrument.
The ATR capability helps to increase the measurement reliability during suboptimal weather
conditions over shorter distances.

The following ATR modes are supported by GeoMoS Monitor, achieving the highest possible
measurement reliability:
▪ Normal The measuring ability during normal weather conditions is
ensured.
▪ Low Vis The measuring ability during suboptimal weather
conditions (e.g. fog, rain) is increased.
▪ Automatic Combination of the Normal and Low Vis ATR modes within
GeoMoS Monitor.
The measuring ability is increased in all weather conditions
and distances.
By default the software attempts measurements in both
modes, Normal and Low Vis ATR.

USE CASE Practical example Automatic ATR mode:

For example, when the Normal ATR mode succeeds, the measurement data is stored and the point
displacements are calculated directly.

If due to poor weather conditions the Normal ATR mode fails, then the Low Vis ATR mode attempts
a second measurement.
The probability to receive valid ATR measurement data is increased.

TARGETCAPTURE TargetCapture makes the telescopic camera image available for visual documentation of the point
measured. Obstructions in the line of sight can be inspected remotely, avoiding safety concerns in
high-risk environments.

Page 102
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

Leica GeoMoS Monitor can capture the telescopic camera images via the “Point Editor” dialog.
1. Use the “Posit To” button to make the currently selected total station position to (aim at)
the currently selected point
2. Press the “TargetCapture” button to capture the telescopic camera image
3. The TargetCapture will be stored on your local hard disk
4. The TargetCapture will be displayed in a separate window

The TargetCapture makes the telescopic camera image available. This means the image is based on
colours of the near-infrared light. For the human eye the images will appear miscoloured.
Notes:
▪ The TargetCapture feature is only available for TM30 and TS30 total stations.
▪ The TargetCapture feature is only available in the manual mode. It is not possible to use the
TargetCapture feature in the automatic measurement cycle and to capture images once a day
for example.
▪ The GeoCOM Imaging License for TM30/TS30 (article number 765 231) is included in Leica
GeoMoS Monitor. The application authenticates the GeoCOM Imaging License and the
GeoCOM Robotic License (article number 734 754) automatically.

USE CASE In large monitoring systems the sensors are connected to multiple measurement stations via
TCP/IP. Very often the GeoMoS computer is located remotely from the monitoring site in an office,
the so-called control center.
In this control center, day-by-day the GeoMoS system messages are stored in the database and
checked by the responsible staff. Often, messages such as “Point not found”, create uncertainty in
the staff members minds. They do not know if there is an obstruction or a significant movement in
the monitoring area.
The new TargetCapture functionality allows remote inspection of obstructions in the line of sight
and easy visual documentation of the point measured. The on-site inspection time can be reduced
and the safety of workers increased.

Analyzer changes and improvements

MULTI GRAPH TAB The Multiple Graphs tab has been extended with special Velocity graphs.

The analysis of Velocity graphs is related to the field

of geotechnical design.
Important: Please verify the Velocity results with
qualified experts.

The Velocity graphs support the following new graph types based on the measured data (available
series):
▪ Instantaneous Velocity
▪ Accumulated Velocity
▪ Inverse Instantaneous Velocity
▪ Inverse Accumulated Velocity

Open the Series dialog and the Velocity graphs with a right-mouse click on the Multi Graphs tab.

VELOCITY The velocity is given by: v = speed

x = distance
t = time

USE CASE “SLOPE The monitoring of natural and excavated slopes is related to the field of geotechnical design. The
MONITORING” slopes stability is influenced by stratigraphy, groundwater level, gradients, strengths of the slope
mass, geometry and driving forces. The common point of interest is the speed of the slope. Failures
of slopes most frequently occur as a result of sliding or separation that exceed set limits. The
control of these slopes usually requires a combination of surface monitoring, subsurface monitoring
THE FOLLOWING USE CASE IS and other additional geotechnical information.
PARTLY SOURCED FROM MR. A very common procedure for surface monitoring of slopes is to use robotic total stations. Points
JOHN DUNNICLIFF’S BOOK in and outside of the possible movement zone are marked with prism (discretize points) and
continuously measured to gain precise 3D measurement data. The analysis of the slope surface is

“GEOTECHNICAL mainly based on the speed.

INSTRUMENTATION FOR
MONITORING FIELD
PERFORMANCE”

The new velocity graphs in GeoMoS Analyzer provide information on the velocity of the slope
movements. Different computation methods such as instantaneous, accumulated speed and the
inverse of both are available.
Besides the surface monitoring other geotechnical information such as crack measurements and
subsurface monitoring (e.g. groundwater pressure, inclinometers and extensometers) are a
necessity. The integration of Campbell Scientific dataloggers in GeoMoS Monitor allows
geotechnical data measurements directly on the surface (e.g. crack measurements) or below the
surface (e.g. groundwater pressure, inclinometers and extensometers).

DISPLACEMENT EXAMPLE The diagram on the left shows an example of

displacement over a certain period of time.
Based on this displacement example, the
four velocity graph types are explained.
The red circle marks a time period where the
chance of a failure was more likely.
The quantity of displacement increased
within identical time periods.

INSTANTANEOUS VELOCITY The instantaneous velocity is the speed at a specific moment.

The velocity graph shows the velocity on an epoch-by-epoch basis. Each measurement result is
compared to the previous measurement result.
The major use of the instantaneous velocity is to get real-time information on the velocity.
The input value time is selectable; the result is always given in meters/day.
The diagram of the left shows an example of
the Instantaneous Velocity based on the
displacements above.
The red circle marks a time period where the
chance of a failure was more likely.
When the displacement and hence the
velocity is reduced, then the graph of the
instantaneous velocity tends upwards.
An increased velocity is an acceleration of
the displacement.

ACCUMULATED VELOCITY The accumulated velocity is the velocity between the selected start time and the current epoch.
The velocity graph shows the velocity by comparing each successive set of measurement data, with

Page 108
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

the values backwards to the selected time.

The major use of the accumulated velocity is to get long-period information on the velocity
average.
The diagram on the left shows an example of
the in Accumulated Velocity based on the
displacements above.
The red circle marks a time period where the
chance of a failure was more likely.

INVERSE INSTANTANEOUS The inverse instantaneous velocity is the reciprocal of the instantaneous velocity.
VELOCITY The inverse instantaneous velocity shows the time (t) it would take to displace a defined distance
(x) at the current instantaneous velocity (v).
This graph provides very valuable information for the geologist.
The diagram on the left shows an example of
the in Inverse Instantaneous Velocity based
on the displacements above.
The red circle marks a time period where the
chance of a failure was more likely. The
inverse instantaneous velocity (day per
meter) trends close to null.
When the displacement and hence the
velocity is reduced, then the graph of the
instantaneous velocity tends downwards.

INVERSE ACCUMULATED The inverse accumulated velocity is the reciprocal of the accumulated velocity.
VELOCITY The inverse accumulated velocity is the time (t) it would take to displace a defined distance (x) at
the current accumulated velocity (v).
This graph provides very valuable information for the geologist.
The diagram on the left shows an example of
the in Inverse Accumulated Velocity based
on the displacements above.
The red circle marks a time period where the
chance of a failure was more likely.

Page 109
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

MULTI GRAPH TAB

The velocity graph above shows the 3D accumulated velocity over a period of 1 month. The
measurement noise of the data in the beginning of the curve makes data analysis difficult.

Important: Selected time periods that are too long may cause the accumulated average of the real
velocity to be misunderstood.

OUTLIER REMOVAL In the Multiple Graphs tab it is now possible to set the state of each measurement similar to the
configuration in the Report tab.
This is achieved with the introduction of the state. The de-activation of outliers in the raw data (for
example Hz angles, V angles, slope distances, etc.) is now possible.

The state can be set to valid or invalid. An invalid measurement is a so-called outlier. Outliers can
be hidden in the Multiple Graphs tab.

FURTHER INFORMATION For more detailed information on Velocity graphs and Outliers please refer to the following sections
in the updated GeoMoS online help:
▪ Multiple Graphs - Series
▪ Multiple Graphs - Outliers

OTHER IMPROVEMENTS The Multiple Graphs can be used to combine the data from multiple points or sensors in a single
graph. This enables checking for correlations.
Continuing the improvements the following new graph types have been added:
▪ Compensator Longitude Tilt

Page 110
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

▪ Compensator Transverse Tilt

BUG FIXES ▪ Daily average with US time stamp

EXTENDED ANALYSIS SERVICE Consultation, training and data analysis services are available from our partner company Technet
GmbH. Technet’s highly qualified engineers have over 15 years of experience in high precision de-
formation surveys, network adjustment and deformation analysis in a wide range of projects.

Please contact SurveyMonitoring.Support@leica-geosystems.com for more detailed information.

TECHNICAL BACKGROUND Leica GeoMoS Adjustment combines automatic network adjustment with deformation analysis. In
addition a simulation tool (network design mode) for the setup planning of monitoring systems is
available.

NETWORK ADJUSTMENT The monitoring system is described with a mathematical and stochastic model. The network is opti-
mally adjusted without destroying the inner constraints. Leica GeoMoS Adjustment is able to auto-
matically detect and remove outliers and identify unstable reference points.

DEFORMATION ANALYSIS The detected movements are qualified by their statistical significance allowing for more informed
decision making. Unstable reference points and monitoring points that have significant movements
are clearly identified. The results of different monitoring epochs can be easily compared.

SIMULATION The precision and reliability of the monitoring system can be quantified using simulated data, al-
(NETWORK DESIGN MODE) lowing the operator to design or adapt the sensor configuration to maximize performance.

USE CASE “SIMULATION” The Network Design Mode requires estimated monitoring system point coordinates. These esti-
mated coordinates can read in as GeoMoS XML files or Technet’s NEPTAN files.

Three components influence the network design:

▪ Network geometry

▪ Network topology

▪ Accuracy

With the Network Design Mode it is possible to optimize these three components to adapt the net-
work planning and sensor configuration to the required accuracy and budget of the customer.

WEBCAM Webcam images show at a glance the situation on site. The images can also be documented
overtime, improving and aiding further data analysis.

USE CASE In monitoring projects, the site (dam, bridge, landslide, …) is often very remote and the Leica
GeoMoS automatic monitoring system acquires autonomous 24/7 spatial data. With a total station
involved in the monitoring system the weather and on site conditions become more significant,
because the station requires line of sight for measurements. For responsible staff it is very
important to indicate clearly if no measurements, “Point not found”, are due to obstructions or

Page 116
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

structural movements.
The screenshot below shows a webcam image of an IP cam directly connected to Leica GeoMoS
Monitor.

In addition, the webcam images document the situation on site overtime, improving and aiding
data analysis.

WEBCAM REQUIREMENTS Nowadays various webcam manufactures are on the market with many different hardware and
software options. Leica GeoMoS Web only supports IP cam models that meet the following
requirements:
▪ IP address (dynamic or static)
▪ unique path to the latest webcam image, for example:
http://your_camera_address/current_image.jpg
▪ jpg, jpeg or png format
Please note that web cams that are connected via USB are not supported.

GEOMOS TEST CAM During our implementation and testing phase at Leica Geosystems headquarters in Heerbrugg we
used a standard web cam model (M22M) from the company Mobotix.

www.mobotix.com

INTEGRATION INTO GeoMoS can connect via the Services to the webcam.
GEOMOS Two steps are required to use a webcam with GeoMoS Monitor:
1. Configuration - Services dialog: The webcam can be configured in GeoMoS with the
Insert… button on the right hand side of the dialog.

Page 117
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

2. Measurement Cycle Editor: The webcam needs to be included in the measurement cycle
in the column Action.

It is the users’ decision to display the webcam image in the Overview tab.
To display the webcam image in the Overview tab click Configuration, Customize from the menu
and check the option “Display Image From Web Cam If Available”.

DATABASE STORAGE With webcam images it is very likely that the GeoMoS SQL database grows very fast and hits the
SQL database limitations. Therefore GeoMoS Monitor checks before storing a webcam image if the
database size of 1GB is not exceeded.
The application generates a message “Too many webcam pictures in database” and displays the
webcam image only in the Overview tab without storing.
Old webcam images can be deleted from the database with the Shirk Database dialog. To open click
Tools, Shrink Database from the menu.

WEBCAM IMAGE TO LEICA Webcam images that are stored in Leica GeoMoS Monitor can be transferred with the Data Push to
GEOMOS WEB GeoMoS Web service to the Leica GeoMoS Web server and are available as Graph type “Webcam
images”.
For more detailed information about this functionality please refer to the Leica GeoMoS Web
Release Notes and Online Help.

Monitor changes and improvements

CAMPBELL SCIENTIFIC GeoMoS supports the integration of Campbell® Scientific dataloggers that support most
DATALOGGER commercially available analog geotechnical sensors.

http://www.campbellsci.com/dataloggers

The Campbell Scientific CR1000 datalogger can perform both, signal measurement and sensor
excitation.
A Campbell datalogger is programmable and records data over time from connected geotechnical
sensors. GeoMoS Monitor reads the data into the GeoMoS database.

Each Campbell datalogger can support several geotechnical sensors of different types because a
datalogger has multiple channels. The numbers of channels are extendable using multiplexers.
In addition Campbell dataloggers can be combined to a bus system.

SUPPORTED CAMPBELL The Campbell® Scientific CR1000 is the preferred model in the range of supported dataloggers:
SCIENTIFIC MODELS ▪ CR200
▪ CR10XPB, CR23XPB, CR510PB
▪ CR1000
▪ CR3000
▪ CR800, CR850

GEOTECHNICAL SENSORS Geotechnical sensors measure non-georeferenced displacements or movements and related
environmental effects or conditions. The major uses of geotechnical sensors are to:
▪ directly measure mechanical, electrical, thermal, chemical or optical parameters
▪ Mechanical: pressure, gas and liquid flow, …
▪ Electrical: resistance, current, voltage, magnetism, …
▪ Thermal: temperature, heat, …

Page 122
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

▪ Chemical: oxygen, pH, …

▪ Optical: light, infra-red, …
▪ measure relative movements directly on the structure
▪ measure below the surface
▪ measure environmental affects that can be used to calibrate other instrumentation (e.g.
meteorological corrections to total station measurements)
Supplementing the geodetic measurements with geotechnical data can help to understand the
reasons for any detected movements and to improve the prediction of failure.
Therefore a huge variety of geotechnical sensors are available, such as:
▪ extensometers
▪ piezometers
▪ strain gauges
▪ inclinometers / tiltmeters
▪ thermometers
▪ barometers
▪ rain gauges

SIGNALS Depending on the sensing technology, the geotechnical sensor data can be obtained by measuring
the
▪ voltage range (from 0-2.5 V to 0-2500 V)
▪ current (typically 4-20 mA)
▪ bridge resistance (2,3,4 and 6-wire half or full bridge)
▪ pulse count (frequency up to 250 khz)
▪ resonant frequency after excitation of a vibrating wire
▪ specialized sensor-dependent signals

CABLING Geotechnical sensors are provided with technical data that includes detailed mounting and cabling
instructions.
The sensor cabling must be adapted to the type of signal transported and taken into account in
calibration phases. The sensitivity to interferences is completely different from one signal type to
the other.
Please consider that a well-planned and thoroughly carried out electric installation does not only
protect the cables against damages, but also looks professional.
▪ For the installation of the cables, the general rules for the installation of electrical wiring
apply.
▪ Avoid sharp bends and lay the cable in large loops within the range of rotating or moving
parts.
▪ When installing the cables, please observe the already existing installation of electric sys-
tem.
▪ After having completed the installation, please drive through all possible positions in or-
der to make sure that the cables are not touching, stretched or even squeezed by any
moving parts.

PROGRAMMING THE The Campbell datalogger requires a small and simple onboard program for retrieving and storing
CAMPBELL DATALOGGER geotechnical sensor data.
We recommend using the free of charge PC200W Datalogger Support Software. This is a simplified

Page 123
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

windows-based software with quick start tutorials that guide the user through the complete
process.
Leica monitoring specialists can help you setup the optimal datalogger program for your
application.

ONBOARD STRUCTURE In addition to the onboard program each Campbell datalogger requires a unique ID, the so-called
(TABLES AND FIELDS) PakBus ID. PakBus® is the network communication protocol of Campbell Scientific.

Each geotechnical sensor connected to the Campbell datalogger records the data into a table.
Each measurement value is recorded to a field in the table.
It is also possible to configure the datalogger so that multiple geotechnical sensors record data in a
single table.

SENSOR LICENSES FOR For each geotechnical sensor you need to order a particular amount of Sensor Licenses (Art. No.
GEOTECHNICAL SENSORS 758 750).
The required amount of sensor licenses depends on the number of measurement values that
GeoMoS Monitor reads out from the Campbell Scientific datalogger.

Sensor connected to the Campbell Scientific datalog- Sensor

ger Licenses
1 sensor measuring one value type (e.g. wind speed) 1
1 sensor measuring three value types (e.g. tempera-
3
ture, pressure and humidity)
1 sensor measuring one value type (e.g. wind speed)
and 2
1 sensor measuring one value type (e.g. rain fall)
5 sensors measuring three value types (e.g. tempera-
15
ture, pressure and humidity)

EXAMPLE If the customer wants to use an anemometer sensor for measuring wind speed he needs 1 Sensor
License.

Page 124
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

Each wind speed measurement is recorded to a field into a Campbell Scientific datalogger table.
The GeoMoS Sensor Manager connects via IP address, datalogger name and PakBus ID to that
particular Table and Field to read out the measurement values.

EXAMPLE If the customer wants to use a meteo sensor for measuring temperature, pressure and humidity he
needs 3 Sensor Licenses.

Each measurement is recorded to a different field into a Campbell Scientific datalogger table. The
GeoMoS Sensor Manager connects via IP address, datalogger name and PakBus ID to that particular
Table and Fields to read out the measurement values.

INTEGRATION INTO The geotechnical sensors connected via the Campbell datalogger are handled in the same way as all
GEOMOS MONITOR other sensors in GeoMoS.
The workflow for a customer is intuitive following a nearly identical work flow as for total stations,
GNSS data and all other sensors that can be connected to GeoMoS.
GeoMoS can connect via the Sensor Manager with TCP/IP or serial interface to a Campbell
datalogger.

The correct PaKbus ID of the Campbell datalogger is required.

Page 125
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

PakBus® is the network communication protocol of Campbell Scientific and is used in the onboard
program.
With Add Table… GeoMoS connects to the Campbell datalogger and reads the available onboard
tables.
In the simplest case, a table corresponds to a geotechnical sensor. Therefore it is possible with the
read out time interval to define for each geotechnical sensor how frequently the results of the
table are read out by GeoMoS Monitor, processed and stored to the GeoMoS database. As an
example it is possible that the measurement rate of the geotechnical sensors is 1Hz but the read
out time interval checks only every 10 minutes for valid data, processes it and transfers the results
to the GeoMoS database.
As a next step, every geotechnical sensor must be assigned to a sensor stand point. The stand point
can be set either in the Campbell datalogger Configuration or Sensor Location dialog.

In addition the data must be identified. Therefore an observation type (e.g. distance, temperature,
...) with the corresponding unit (e.g. meters, feet, …) is required. The observation type can be set in
the Campbell datalogger Configuration dialog.
After the mounting of a geotechnical sensor it is common to set a Null Value for each sensor to
simplify the detection of changes later on. Null values can be set in the Null Measurements dialog.

Differences between the current measured value and the null value can be determined and limit
checks executed if set tolerances fail.
All active geotechnical sensors connected to a Campbell datalogger must be inserted in the
Measurement Cycle Editor.

Page 126
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

Note: The read out time interval only defines how frequently a Campbell datalogger table is read
out to GeoMoS Monitor.
All received and valid results are all stored in the database.

USE CASE In rail construction projects, engineers have to ensure that movements due to construction
activities (e.g. subsidence) do not affect the safety of the rail users.

The setup above shows the rail track at a construction site. A total station monitors prisms that are
mounted on the masts of the railway power lines.
Besides the option of mounting prisms directly on the rail track (see photo 1), the integration of
Campbell datalogger allows the possibility to measure geotechnical displacements or movements
directly on the structure.

Photo 1 Photo 2

Photo 2 (right) shows an inclination sensor directly mounted on the sleeper between the rail tracks.
Every inclination sensor is connected to a Campbell datalogger that performs sensor excitation,
measurement and temporary data storage. The measured inclinations are retrieved by GeoMoS
Monitor and stored in the centralized GeoMoS monitoring database.
Combined with the geodetic measurements of the total station, GeoMoS is a flexible and multi
purpose full real-time monitoring system. It helps responsible engineers to measure and confirm
movements and supports the prediction of structural failure.

Page 127
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

ADDITIONAL USE CASES Two additional use cases underline the importance of an integrated solution that supports geodetic
and geotechnical sensors for an overall understanding of structural movements and to possibility
increase safety.
The amount of snow that falls on the roof of buildings affects the stability of the roof and walls. A
snow gauge measures the amount of snow. This result helps to understand the movements of the
building roof and walls measured by a total station inside the building.
The movement of a concrete dam is highly influenced by the water level of the reservoir.
Supplementing the measurement of the water level with the dam displacement helps engineers to
understand the reason for deformations of the dam.

VIRTUAL SENSORS GeoMoS supports real data transmitting sensors and so-called "virtual sensors". With virtual
sensors the output of one or more sensors can be modelled using constants, mathematical
functions and/or logic operators.
The major uses of virtual sensors are to:
▪ Get reasonable and customized results types (e.g. convergences, torsion, …)
▪ Combine information from independent sensors (e.g. inclination with height and perform
a plausibility check)

INTEGRATION INTO Virtual sensors are handled by GeoMoS in a similar way to all other sensors in GeoMoS.
GEOMOS MONITOR GeoMoS can compute virtual sensors in the Virtual Sensor Editor dialog. Every virtual sensor must
be added in the upper part of the dialog.

A virtual sensor is defined by a name, an observation type and a sensor stand point. In addition the
result of a virtual sensor can be limited to a minimal and maximum value.
The associated formula can be entered in the middle part of the dialog.
It is possible to include data from physical sensors in the virtual sensors computation using aliases.
An alias is defined with the sensor name, sensor stand point and observation type (e.g. easting
coordinate, inclination x, etc.) in the lower part of the dialog.

Page 128
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

In almost the same manner as for normal sensors it may be reasonable to set a Null Value where
the monitoring system starts. Null values can be set in the Null Measurements dialog.

Differences between the current measured value and the null value can be determined and limit
checks executed if set tolerances fail.
All active virtual sensors must be inserted into the Measurement Cycle Editor so that they can be
used in the monitoring system.

Note:
The virtual sensor computation can be purchased with GeoMoS Monitor Option 1 (Computation).

USE CASE A monitoring system can save time and money during construction by reducing the amount of
reinforcing that must be installed in order to ensure safety. After construction the monitoring
system provides assurance that the tunnel remains within the designed tolerances.
During or after excavation the distances within the tunnel profile, the so-called convergences are
one of the most important characteristics that must be monitored.

Using a total station, the coordinates of fixed prisms mounted in the tunnel can be automatically

Page 129
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

measured with high accuracy. In GeoMoS Monitor, virtual sensors can be configures that will
compute the tunnel convergences, which can then be displayed in GeoMoS Analyzer.

Additionally, GeoMoS Monitor can control and input data from geotechnical sensors installed in the
tunnel, such as extensometers, via a Campbell Scientific datalogger.
An extensometer measures relative changes in distance between two
anchors in a borehole with sub millimetre accuracy which may be
caused by mechanical load on the tunnel.
A combination of geodetic and geotechnical sensors provide an
excellent foundation for quickly discovering unfavourable stress
conditions on the rock or concrete mass.

SMS OVER INTERNET It is common for the GeoMoS computer to be connected to the internet. As such, GeoMoS v4.0
supports SMS over internet with the ASPSMS.com provider.
Besides the already existing transmission of GeoMoS messages via SMS using the GFU24 is still
available.

DIGITAL IO DEVICE In addition to the ICP DAS Digital card, the W&T Digital IO device is now supported to switch a
digital output channel.
All available GeoMoS system messages of the Message Configurator can be configured to switch an

Page 130
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

output channel via a digital card/device.

USE CASE An external digital output card can be mounted in a communication box outside the GeoMoS
Monitor computer.

Monitor changes and improvements

NEW LIMIT CHECKS Added new limit checks for

▪ Corrected slope distance (Ref PPM) and
▪ Corrected slope distance (Atmospheric PPM)
Specially suited for highly accurate monitoring of distances known as “1D Monitoring”. The two
new series are added certainly to the Multiple Graphs view in the GeoMoS Analyzer.

USE CASE “ROCKFALL” A rockfall is when a fragment of the rock becomes detached and slides, rolls , bounces or flys down
a slope. Rockfalls can occur due to extreme weather conditions (e.g. heavy rainfalls, temperature
and climate changes), earthquakes, etc. The challenge is to measure the very small movements and
compute the deformation of the rock before it is detached due the gravity.

Page 132
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

GeoMoS supports the most accurate total stations on the market. With a setup where the total sta-
tion is placed nearly in the direction to the predicted rockfall slope it is possible to use only the very
high precise distances to measure the movements. GeoMoS uses temperature and pressure data or
reference distances to compute the meteorological model and reduce the atmospheric influence
from the measured distances. The new limit checks can be configured in GeoMoS and messages
generated when significant movement occurs.

OTHER IMPROVEMENTS ▪ GeoMoS version 3.1 is compatible with Leica GPS Spider version 2.2, 2.3 and the new

USE CASE Many monitoring systems do not need advanced geodetic instruments such as total stations or
GNSS receivers to fulfil the customer’s requirements. Many monitoring systems just use
meteorological or geotechnical sensors to measure important environmental effects or conditions.

GeoMoS is now an economical solution for small monitoring projects using geotechnical sensors.

USE CASE Many engineering companies and universities are active in a wide range of areas within the
monitoring market. Together they have achieved phenomenal technical competence and skills. The
new modular and flexible GeoMoS offers an affordable option as a simple and reliable monitoring
engine that operates the measurement scheduling and stores only raw measurements in an open
SQL database without any computation. Customers can use GeoMoS as pure data acquisition
software and focus on combined and advanced data analysis with either own developed software
or for example MS Excel to compute the desired monitoring information required for managing the
risks.

Monitor changes and improvements

TCP/IP SUPPORT FOR ALL Direct TCP/IP based communications interface has been added to GeoMoS to support a current
SENSORS mobile network and Ethernet technology in addition to the traditional serial based communication.
With this communication technology implemented into GeoMoS Monitor, communication becomes
more powerful and flexible than before.

BENEFITS… ▪ Ethernet enabled

▪ Direct connection to the internet or mobile networks (GSM/GPRS/EDGE)
▪ No virtual COM ports needed
▪ Save costs for cable or radio lines

USE CASE Reliable and flexible communication between the sensors and the GeoMoS Monitor computer is
one of the most important parts in every monitoring installation. However in many areas the
communication channel causes problems - serial cables cannot be used all the time because of
infrastructure problems, radio signals may be affected by interference or the monitoring site and
the GeoMoS computer are very far from each other.

The setup above shows a total station at the monitoring site where the distance between the total
station and the GeoMoS computer that controls the measurements is very long.
To manage this situation the total station and GeoMoS communicate directly and seamlessly over
the internet. A Wireless Router box connects the total station via a mobile network
(GSM/GPRS/EDGE) to the internet. The total station is accessible from everywhere, measures the
monitoring structure and streams data in real-time to the GeoMoS computer located in the office.

Page 138
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

USE CASE Since GeoMoS is Ethernet enabled, multiple connections of sensors through a network (LAN/WLAN)
are supported. The following picture illustrates a typical solution.

The sensors are plugged into a standard COM server and both, the GeoMoS computer and COM
server are connected to the LAN/WLAN.
Within the Sensor Manager it is possible to define the TCP/IP connection for each sensor.

SITE MAP The Site Map shows at a glance the status of your monitoring project using traffic light symbols
overlaid on a photograph or geo-referenced map. Use the Site Map to manage the whole project
and navigate to measurement and result data for more detailed information or to check on critical
areas.
The Site Map shows by default all monitoring points with their original coordinate. The customer
can rearrange the position of the points within the Site Map.

Page 139
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

The overlaid photograph or geo-referenced map is called Background Map.

BACKGROUND MAP You can register photographs or maps in various formats using the Background Map dialog.

You can identify the points with the context menu Set Reference Point and assign local grid
coordinates to these points. GeoMoS will then calculate the transformation from the pixel
coordinates to the local grid coordinates to reference the image to the coordinates of your survey.

Page 140
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

The Background Map can be switched on or off using the Graphical Settings or context menu. The
context menu allows customizing the appearance of the image.
To use a photograph as Background Map proceed with the geo-referencing of two faked points and
customize the position of the points in the Site Map tab to fit into the photograph. This needs to be
done only once at the beginning of the project.

MULTIPLE GRAPHS The Multiple Graphs can be used to combine the data from multiple points or sensors, in a single
graph to check for correlations.
Continuing the improvements the following new multi graphs have been added:
▪ Atmospheric PPM correction
▪ Reference PPM correction
▪ Orientation
▪ Vz Correction
▪ Temperature
▪ Pressure
▪ Easting / Easting Difference
▪ Northing / Northing Difference
▪ Height / Height Difference

The following graphs have already been added for version 2.1:
▪ Raw slope distance
▪ PPM corrected slope distance
▪ Raw Hz angle (Face I)
▪ Orientation corrected Hz angle (Face I)
▪ Raw V angle (Face I)
▪ Corrected V angle (Face I)
▪ Level reading
▪ Nivel X and Nivel Y

Page 141

USE CASE With the Multi Graphs the accuracy of raw measurements and results can be visualized together
and possible correlations can be easily detected, enabling more thorough analysis of the
monitoring data.

Monitor changes and improvements

MAJOR GPS The Spider Positioning Products (real-time) and Post Processing Products are now handled as every
IMPROVEMENTS other sensor in GeoMoS.
The workflow for a customer is intuitive following an identical work flow as for total stations,
temperature sensors and all other sensors that can be connected to GeoMoS.
GeoMoS can connect via the Sensor Manager and TCP/IP to a Spider Site Server.

Each active Spider Post Processing Product or Positioning Product is displayed in the Sensor
Manager and can be also activated for GeoMoS.

A Spider Positioning Products and Post Processing Products can be assigned in the Sensor Location
dialog
▪ to a total station to update the stand point coordinates before the measurements or
▪ as a target point to update the coordinates of a reference point that is measured with a total
station in a correction group.

USE CASE

In seismic active areas (e.g. mines) the total station stand points or reference points cannot be
assumed to be absolutely stable. Undetected movements in these points can introduce systematic

Page 144
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

effects making it harder to detect movements of the monitoring points. Using GPS, the coordinates
of these reference points can be automatically updated with high accuracy, enabling the total
station to measure the true movements of the points of interest.

(1)

(3)

(2)

The setup above shows three GPS antennas GPS antenna (1) is mounted in a stable area as
reference station. The reference station should be as close as possible (<3km) to the monitoring
area so that the baselines can be computed with the highest accuracy. GPS antenna (2) is mounted
on the top of the measurement hut and applied to the stand point with an three-dimensional
offset. To orientate the system the third GPS antenna (3) inside the unstable area is used to update
the reference point. A GPS receiver can also be used for monitoring points and is especially suited
to high speed applications (such as bridges) and where line of sight is an issue. A direct interface
has been made between GeoMoS and Spider to support advanced GPS monitoring using advanced
ambiguity resolution techniques and automatic post processing. GeoMoS and Spider communicate
directly and seamlessly. Combined with GPS Spider, GeoMoS supports centralized real time GPS
processing, reducing communication infrastructure and both single frequency (L1 only) and dual
frequency (L1/L2) RTK. GeoMoS is able to compute median values of the GPS results over user
defined time periods to avoid the influence of outliers, thereby ensuring reference point update is
done with highest possible accuracy.

Various additional GPS Properties can be accessed from the Sensor Location dialog.

Notes:
▪ The option Do not update height in the GPS Properties dialog will not influence the stored
results. Only the update procedures of the coordinates are affected by this setting.

USE CASE GeoMoS is able to compute the GPS Spider Positioning Products and Post Processing Products a
median value over several hours for higher accuracy and reliability.

Page 145
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

The example above shows the 2D displacement for a 4km baseline with a 24 hours post processing
product. Positions can be measured with sub-centimetre accuracy and slow movements can be
detected. Therefore it is possible to reliably update
▪ total station stand points and
▪ reference points.

For the GPS position update of reference points the required offsets for Easting, Northing and

Height can be entered.

USE CASE The example below shows the setup of a GPS antenna to update the total station stand point
coordinates.

This principle can also be used to update prism coordinates.

All active Spider Post Processing Product or Positioning Product must be inserted in the
Measurement Cycle Editor.

Page 146
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

Notes:
▪ The Spider Site Server supports streaming rates up to 20 Hz. GeoMoS calculates an average
from the data with a minimum interval of 10 seconds and stores the averaged result in the
GeoMoS database.
▪ Only Quality Factor 4 (ambiguity fixed phase position) is accepted for Spider Positioning and
Post Processing Products.

VERSION COMPATIBILITY For more detailed information refer to the section “Version Compatibility”.
WITH GNSS SPIDER

LEVELS The Leica Sprinter and DNA are now supported for high accurate subsidence monitoring
applications.
The DNA is the high precision digital level and the Sprinter is the low cost digital level from Leica
Geosystems.
Structures that require subsidence monitoring can be measured and analysed with the GeoMoS
software and the superior Leica Levels. To guarantee permanent operation of the system it is
recommended that the Switchbox (Art. No. 744 793) be purchased.

USE CASE Engineering structures such as buildings and bridges require subsidence monitoring to ensure their
integrity.

With GeoMoS and the digital levels a simple temporary or permanent monitoring of settlements
can be realised.

START AND END TIME OF Optimisation of the conditions in the Message Configurator dialog. The Start and End time for
ACTIONS actions can now be configured.

Page 147
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

USE CASE The person in charge of the safety for a monitoring system can now decide that actions are not
triggered at certain times e.g. during night times when no one is working on-site. Another option
can be that actions only be triggered at the beginning of the shift of the workers.

SIEMENS MC75 In addition to the GFU17, the new GFU24 (Siemens MC75) supports sending SMS from your
monitoring system to responsible staff members.
All available System messages of the Message Configurator can be sent via the GFU17 and GFU24
to other mobile phones.

USE CASE Important monitoring system information can be published everywhere to dedicated staff
members and simplify your work flow.

TPS POST PROCESSING Improved TPS station Post Processing to re-process displacements if the Null coordinate of a station
point was changed after the measurements were made.

FREE STATION Further improvements in the Free Station log file output have been implemented.
▪ The used meteorological values (temperature and pressure) are stored together with the
raw measurements into the Free Station log file.
▪ The standard deviations of the horizontal angles are updated correctly to improve the
analysis of the free station computation results.

COORDINATE TYPE UPDATE An improved Learn button in the Point Editor dialog avoids the reset of the coordinate type
‘Reference’ by mistake.
The functionality Learn point now updates only the coordinate types ‘Current’ and ‘Scan’. The
coordinate type ‘Reference’ is not overwritten and, as such, the correction groups Free Station,
Distance Intersection, Orientation, PPM and Vz Correction are not influenced by wrongly re-learnt
points.
The coordinate type ‘Reference’ can be overwritten with the Set Null Measurement context menu
option manually, when editing coordinates or when importing points in the Point Editor.

AUTO EXPORT The Auto Export has been moved from the GeoMoS Analyzer to the GeoMoS Monitor application.
The export of data can be done from GeoMoS Professional, GeoMoS Server and now also from
GeoMoS Lite!
In addition, the size of the backup files has been reduced.

USE CASE The Auto Export function can now be used in the automatic measurement cycle e.g. as daily action
to allow frequent backups and therefore improve the database security of the monitoring system.
Now GeoMoS Lite customers can also use the Auto Export to backup the data from their
monitoring system.

OTHER IMPROVEMENTS ▪ The meteorological corrections are again applied to the raw measurements in all correction

Page 148
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

groups. This was not done in versions 1.6 and 2.0 and made analysis of the data more difficult.
▪ The search window of the onboard software is not applied for TPS1200 Series anymore. Only
the system Search Window configured in the Point Group Editor is used to find prisms. This
avoids the incorrect measurement of points causing outliers.
▪ Cycle history bug, mix of start times of correction groups.

▪ Optimization of the GeoCOM protocol-handling component. The GeoCOM response of the total
stations is checked more rigorously to avoid potential problems caused by corrupted
messages.

Analyzer changes and improvements

MULTIPLE GRAPHS The Multiple Graphs tab has been added to the GeoMoS Analyzer. The Multiple Graphs tab
supports new graph types and is able display multiple series in a single plot. You can find the
Multiple Graphs in the tabbed view below the main window.

With the Multi Graphs the accuracy of the sensor, raw measurements and results can be visualized
together and possible correlations can be easily detected, enabling more thorough analysis of the
monitoring data.
Available series:
▪ Raw slope distance
▪ PPM corrected slope distance
▪ Raw Hz angle (Face I)
▪ Orientation corrected Hz angle (Face I)
▪ Raw V angle (Face I)
▪ Corrected V angle (Face I)
▪ Level reading
▪ Nivel X and Nivel Y

USE CASE The example below shows the slope distance to a single prism at a distance of approximately 1000
meters. The grey curve is the raw slope distance without any corrections and the blue curve is the
ppm (atmospheric) corrected result.

Page 149
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

▪ It is clearly visible that the accuracy over 1000 meters increases from 2 cm to 0.5 cm with the
meteorological distance correction!
The next example shows the horizontal angle to a single prism at a distance of approximately 50
meters. The grey curve is the raw Hz angle without any corrections and the blue curve is the
orientation corrected horizontal angle.

▪ Due movements of the measurement hut and the pillar there was an extreme drift in
orientation. However, the orientation correction group was able to correct this effect
perfectly.

OTHER IMPROVEMENTS ▪ Calculate outlier button is working again.

▪ Display of Grid lines for plots with inverted north south axis are working again.

▪ SQL queries optimized to display displacement graphs and vector plots faster.

▪ Point blunder tolerance exceeded points can be switched on and off in the multiple graphs tab.

TPS POST PROCESSING TPS Post Processing has been included again. Post Processing is possible when changing the
following Options:
▪ Meteo Model,
▪ Coordinate System and Distance Reductions,
▪ Coordinate Calculation Method between 1D and 3D monitoring.
Editing and reprocessing of the following fields is possible:
▪ Null Coordinate,
▪ Profile direction,
▪ Additive Constant,
▪ Reflector Height,
▪ Temperature and Pressure,
▪ Station Coordinates (only editing),
▪ Instrument Height,
▪ Manual import of coordinates.

USE CASE Imagine that e.g. a prism was measured with an additive constant of 23 mm. After a while the
operator realised that there was a setup problem and that the additive constant should have been
0 mm. After changing the additive constant there was a step in the time series. With the use of the
post processing functionality the wrongly used additive constant can be corrected.

SOUTH AFRICA Inverse function to swap North and South directions in the vector and height vector plot.

OTHER IMPROVEMENTS ▪ More flexible and customizable handling of colours and graphic settings in the time-line
diagrams. Persistency of the customized colour settings for the timeline diagrams.
▪ GPS data is now shown in the report view.

GeoMoS Server release

NEW RELEASE! Officially supported in GeoMoS v2.0!

▪ Database replication over TCP/IP and serial line (for example Satelline radio modems).

▪ Two-way configuration of the system is supported (Client-Server, Server-Client).

▪ Secure database replication between multiple GeoMoS Professional and one GeoMoS Server
system. Data integrity is preserved also if there is a temporary loss of communication between
the client and the server.
▪ Server database can be used as backup database for the client.

▪ Server system will generate a message if the client system is no longer running.
▪ The Message Configurator will run on the server machine to distribute the information from all
connected monitoring systems.

USE CASE The GeoMoS Server system is perfectly suited to large monitoring systems with sensors connected
to multiple measurement stations. Each station itself can work independent from the overall
system. The data is replicated to server from which all systems can be controlled and all data
accessed. Even if the communication to the server is interrupted the stations continue their
essential monitoring tasks. The server is the central part that allows easy configuration of the
individual monitoring stations and centralised messaging.

Monitor changes and improvements

USER INTERFACE The user interface has been completely renewed and the overall look and feel has been improved.

▪ The Overview tab has been revised. In

addition there is now a customizable
picture on overview pane to add a personal
touch to the installation.

▪ A new Sensor Status tab has been added.

▪ A new real time Chart tab has been added.

ENHANCED MULTI SENSOR More flexible configuration of sensors:

MONITORING ▪ Previously global settings are now sensor specific and new settings have been introduced to
increase the accuracy of the measurements and performance of the system.
More flexible and customizable calculation with TPS
▪ Previously global settings are now point group specific and new settings have been introduced
to ensure reliable and accurate calculation of displacements and corrections.

USE CASE Previously global settings e.g. the number of required reference points of a total station to
compute a free station are now specific configurable.

Each total station can now measure exactly the specific number of reference points.

Page 157
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

USE CASE A monitoring installation that may have

problems with temporary point obstructions can
use the option ‘Retries if point not found’.
For example in monitoring projects of railway
tracks and train stations the line of sight to the
monitoring prisms is at regular intervals not
possible because of train traffics. With the
settings ‘Retries if point not found’ and ‘Delay in
between’ it is possible to define how often
GeoMoS will re-try to measure a point if it is not
found and the delay between each subsequent
attempt to measure the point after the prism
was not found.

SENSOR MANAGER GeoMoS can now connect to GPS sensors via both TCP/IP and serial.
The sensor manager has been improved to allow faster recording of GPS data, especially when
multiple sensors are attached.

INTEGRATION WITH GPS A direct interface has been made between GeoMoS and Spider to support advanced GPS
SPIDER monitoring.
GeoMoS and Spider communicate directly and seamlessly without the need for the user to
configure TCP/IP or serial ports. Combined with GPS Spider v2.0, GeoMoS supports centralized real
time GPS processing, reducing communication infrastructure, and both single frequency (L1 only)
and dual frequency (L1/L2) RTK.
Together with GPS Spider 2.01, GeoMoS is able to read in results of post processed GPS for higher
accuracy and reliability. The Post Processing is performed directly in GPS Spider using either
recorded from a real time stream or logged on the sensor and downloaded periodically.

USE CASE In tectonically, seismically and volcanically active areas, unstable mountainsides or mining areas,
the total station stand points or reference points cannot be assumed to be absolutely stable. Any
undetected movement in the stand points or reference points will reduced the accuracy of the
deformation calculated for the monitoring points. This problem can be avoided by updating the
coordinates of the total station stand points and reference points using GPS measurements.
GPS Spider expands the use of GPS measurements in comparison with classic GPS, especially with
integration of GMX902 receivers.
When combined with Leica GPS Spider advanced GPS processing software for coordinate
calculation and raw data storage and Leica GeoMoS monitoring software for analysis of movements
and calculation of limit checks, the Leica GMX902 unfolds its full potential: high-precision
measurements, accurate and reliable data processing and data analysis. Third party analysis
software can also be easily integrated via the standard NMEA interface of Leica GPS Spider.

VERSION COMPATIBILITY For more detailed information refer to the section “Version Compatibility”.
WITH GNSS SPIDER

VARIOUS CHECKS FOR Correction groups (Free Station, Orientation, e.g.) are measured to compute corrections for
CORRECTION GROUPS systematic effects in the measurements due to the measurement environment. The corrections are
applied to the measurements to the monitoring points in order to increase their accuracy. The most
common corrections are the change of orientation or a slow movement of the station point. High
quality corrections can only be computed if there are reliable measurements to stable reference
points. It is possible to define tolerance checks for the residuals of a free station computation or
tolerances for the standard deviation of orientation, PPM or vertical circle corrections. If one of the
defined tolerances is exceeded the system will send an information message. The following types of
checks are supported:
▪ Minimum number of valid reference points
▪ Repeat correction group if one of the checks failed. A delay time can be defined before the
system will start the repeat measurement
▪ Residuals (Hz Angle, Horizontal distances and Height differences)
▪ Tolerances for standard deviation of orientation, vertical correction and PPM correction.

USE CASE The line of sight between the TPS instrument and a reference point can be disturbed due to e.g.
bad weather conditions, traffic of people and vehicles. In such a case the minimum number of
reference points is not reached for the free station group. The system will repeat the free station
group. Only if the repeat measurement was successful the system will apply the new corrections for
the station. In all other cases the system will inform the user with the message “Correction group
failed, minimum number of reference point not reached!” and the last valid set of corrections will
be used.

LIMIT CHECKS Absolute limit checks are now integrated: Messages are generated if the total movement from the
null value exceeds specified limits. Works with all supported observation types, not just
displacements.
Multiple levels of limit checks (blue, yellow, red) have been added.
Added limit checks for many measurement types, not just displacements:
Hz Nivel X
Vz Nivel Y
Slope distance Rain Measurement
Easting Leica Disto

Page 159
Leica GeoMoS Release Notes

Northing Water Level

Height Temperature
2D displacement Pressure
3D displacement Humidity
Longitudinal displacement Extensometer
Transverse displacement ....

USE CASE The ability to detect and react to potential problems before they develop will help in the reduction
of insurance costs and the prevention of catastrophic failures that may result in injury, death and
huge financial loss. For this all movements and displacements can be tracked with dedicated limit
and different levels.

SIEMENS MC45 Integrated support for SMS messages: Connect and configure the transmission of messages via SMS
using the GFU17 Siemens MC45 mobile phone (art. No. 733278).

USE CASE Important monitoring system information can be published everywhere to dedicated staff
members and simplify your work.

MESSAGING AND New messages added to improve communication and recording of the system behavior. The
CONDITIONS messages have three different types being
▪ Information
▪ Message
▪ Warning
To trigger and filter this information the Conditional messaging is added.

SUPPORT FOR LEICA The Nivel200, the new Leica Geosystems inclination sensors for monitoring applications, is now
NIVEL200 fully supported in GeoMoS.
The Nivel200 sensors are two-axis high precision inclination sensors with a resolution of 0.01mrad
(6.4cc) to detect and monitor displacements where high precision information about the inclination
and the direction of movement is needed.

USE CASE The Nivel200 sensors make it possible to monitor the structural stability of buildings, bridges and
dams in near real-time e.g. during construction work. The very high precision and long term
stability make it possible to detect movements deep in the foundation of the structure.

PROFILE DIRECTION The direction of the standard profile is changed. The direction of the standard profile is by default
the direction from the total station to the measured target point.

OTHER IMPROVEMENTS ▪ Fixed the bug that caused the display units not to be saved.

▪ Fixed the bug that caused the signal scan to sometimes produce the “Point not found message”
during the final measurement.
▪ The timeout after a sensor reset using a switchbox has been increased for the TPS1200 to allow
for a longer restart time.
▪ Changed the default Compensator Setting from OFF to ON.

▪ Changed the default Quality Factor for GPS sensors from –1 (accept all) to 4 (ambiguity fixed
phase position).
▪ Improved the information given in the messages that are displayed if there are communication
problems with one or more sensors when closing the Sensor Manager or starting automatic

Page 160

measurement.

Analyzer changes and improvements

OTHER IMPROVEMENTS ▪ An option has been added to the automatic export to enable/disable automatic deletion of the
data from the database after the export
▪ Post Processing has been temporarily removed. An update will be released that includes post
processing
▪ Fixed the bug that caused the daily average to not be shown correctly for the height
displacement.

GEOMOS VERSION 7.0 – LATEST

ABOUT CCP GeoMoS Monitor, GeoMoS Analyzer and GeoMoS Adjustment require a software maintenance key
(CCP). Software maintenance (CCP) is always linked to the Entitlement ID.
Expired software maintenance does not stop the usage of the software. It is not an expiring license.
An expired maintenance only prevents the use of newer software versions.

Leica Geosystems provides a detailed manual that explains the new Leica Software Licensing and
guides you step-by-step through the new software installation process.
Please contact your monitoring support team.
This manual does not contain specific GeoMoS information.

UPDATES AND UPGRADES 1. CCP is valid: Installation of the latest version is allowed

2. Last valid CCP not expired more than 3 years ago: Order a CCP to install the latest Geo-
MoS version
3. Last valid CCP expired more than 3 years ago: Order the GeoMoS Upgrade Bundle
(6004463) to install the latest GeoMoS version
4. Last valid CCP expired more than 6 years ago: It’s recommended to order (and sell) a
new GeoMoS license because the software upgrade procedure is not supported
Note: Please refer to the Structural Monitoring Equipment List for more info
Upgrade Information
BACKUP OF DATABASE AND Before uninstalling GeoMoS it is important to make a full backup of the installation so that the
REGISTRY previous setup can be restored in the event of problems.

Backup. Save the entire database as a .BAK file.
3. Make screenshots of all global system settings.
4. Close GeoMoS Monitor.
5. Open “regedit” using the Run command on the Windows Start Menu. At the prompt type
“regedit” and press OK. In Windows Registry navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Leica Geosystems\. Select the
folder “Leica GeoMoS”. Use the menu File → Export and save the registry as a .REG file.

Note: for Leica GeoMoS customers with Leica GNSS Spider v6.2 or older, it is recommended to stop
all Leica GNSS Spider services when upgrading to the latest Leica GeoMoS version.
The downgrade to a previous GeoMoS version is not supported.
Upgrades from versions older than 7.0 are officially not supported anymore.
When updating a GeoMoS Monitor DB greater than 9 GB, it is recommended to reduce the data
before the update or to ensure that the SQL license allows databases larger than 10 GB. During the
update the GeoMoS Monitor database may grow because of adding functionality to improve the
performance and sustainability. If during the update the database exceeds the 10GB limit, it may
result with the stopped system.

Support Notes
We hope that all customers can be upgraded to the current GeoMoS version by now. We believe
that our customers are interested to work with the newest version to benefit from the many
improvements that have been made. Do not forget that the monitoring systems are working in
critical situations involving mining, landslides, construction and other important infrastructure. The
systems are expected to deliver continuously high accuracy deformation data and information to
