My Professional Introduction

I am Alfred Poyser. I am an educator from Jamaica, but I am currently teaching in the

small island of Montserrat. I have been in education for over twenty years and have gained a

wide array of experiences and skills in teaching. Being a facilitator of education has allowed me

to serve students of various age groups, racial profiles, and socio-economic backgrounds in

multiple countries. I also gained additional knowledge and experience while serving as acting

principal for a small secondary school. My philosophy towards education is that every student

can learn the same things but not in the same way; and while every student can learn the same

content, every student may not grasp the same content. As educators, our role should be to

facilitate an avenue the promotes a yearning for learning.

As an educator I have also made sure that I remained a constant learner. With a full time

job in education this meant that most of this learning had to be online. With years of online

learning experience, I have gained an understanding and appreciation of online learning from the

students point of view. This means that I can now tailor online lessons that are less technically

challenging and easier for students to access and manipulate.

It is important for educators in the online environment to be creative and proactive.

Creativity enables us to design and implement online learning strategies that reach every student

using their unique learning styles, and proactivity ensures that we plan for unforeseen responses

and actions within the online environment. Educators have to be more careful within the online

environment, since we have less control over the actual lesson and how students participate

within the lesson activities. We must think like the students in order to detect how students will

utilize the lessons within the online environment.

While I consider myself a survivor, I know that there may be challenges and hurdles that

may prove difficult to mitigate. These challenges include, financial constraints, time

management, and personal motivation. As a single parent with a yearning to excel and set an

example for my children, I know that I have to find a way to clear these hurdles and make it to

the finish line. I know that while I may not be on the podium for a medal, but I will definitely

complete the race.
