Protagonist

Through using the website ’16 Personalities’ and answering a vast number of

multiple-choice questions, my personality was deemed to resemble that of a protagonist.

Although I was initially skeptical of how accurate this would be, as I scrolled further down, I

realized I could relate to many of the listed ideals and characteristics. Protagonists are

described as individuals who are passionate and reliable in all that they do. Furthermore, their

charismatic, open-mindedness and altruistic traits often pave the way for leadership roles,

with former US president Barack Obama an example. Although I would not necessarily

consider myself to be a natural leader, I do think that I am open-minded and that this trait

proves useful in group settings. However, the same high expectations and intensity that make

protagonists high-functioning members of society can also prove to be their shortcoming.

Their consistent focus on self-improvement and imprinting this philosophy on people around

them can at times make them come across as condescending. From their own perspective too,

their willingness to help whoever and wherever they can often lead them into carrying other

individuals’ burdens. From my own experience, I have noticed and dealt with my instinct to

help others before getting my own affairs in order. Although in some scenarios it can be

beneficial, I now recognize the importance of putting myself first.

There are numerous ways in which the above-mentioned personality traits can both

propel and diminish me in a classroom setting. In a group setting at school, a protagonist’s

focus on helping others can prove wonders for those around them. However, at the same

time, it can prove detrimental for the protagonist themselves, as their focus is on others rather

than themselves. Protagonists also struggle with monotonous work in the classroom,

something I can relate to. Classwork that is bland and disengaging often results in me losing

concentration in class and focusing on something else. However, I have definitely become

aware of this over the last few years and can now recognize when I am at the stage of losing

focus.
