Planning TO tHE People:

Building a Sustainable Future

Project Summary
As a class, you have learned about diverse model cities around the world and created a scorecard for an “ideal city.” In
a group of five, you will conduct field work and independent research to score San Diego in your assigned category.
Then, you will write and pitch a proposal to improve San Diego’s score. The strongest proposal for each category will be
submitted to the City of San Diego.

Final products
1. Research Portfolio (100 points, individual score): Captures your learning from independent research and
field work, including a score for San Diego in this scorecard category. Each group member is responsible for
their own portfolio, but your scores should be the same. This score includes:
a. Field work reflection: 50 points
b. Independent research (annotations and summary): 40 points
c. Rationale for score: 10 points
2. Proposal (75 points, 50% group score, 25% individual score, 25% peer assessment): What would you
improve in your category and how? This needs to be informed by your research portfolio. You will submit one
proposal as a group.
3. Pitch (25 points, individual score): At our exhibition, your group will briefly describe the problem you’ve
identified and how you intend to solve it. Be prepared for audience questions. Your group will submit your pitch
materials, including a description of each group member’s contributions.

Group roles
Each person in your group will have a professional title for this project, which will be assigned to you. You will be
required to include a list of tasks you completed relevant to your role in your RSAs.
● Team Lead: This individual is a people person who can coach the team and feels most confident with public
speaking. They will most likely lead the pitch.
● Project Manager: This individual is highly organized and responsible, and will keep track of appointments,
deadlines, and materials.
● Research Officer: This individual loves data and research, and will be the “go-to” for any technical questions that
arise. Your research officer must sign off on the proposal being evidence-based.
● Associates (2-3): These individuals are “Jacks of all trades” and will support the team, switching quickly between
tasks. They will work closely with the project manager.

Deadlines
Aligning with the real world, we will have End of Day (EOD) deadlines for this project. Your group must submit by 5 pm.
You will not be able to move onto the next phase without submitting, meaning you would have less time to complete the
project.
● Friday, May 12: Research portfolio
● Tuesday, May 30: Final draft of proposal
● Friday, June 2: Pitch materials
If your group anticipates missing a deadline, your project manager must send Annelise an email outlining the
circumstances, what you need to complete the work, and when it will be completed.
Field work logistics
Your group will be conducting at least one afternoon of off site field work specific to your scorecard category.
Permission slips will be sent home on Wednesday, April 26 and must be returned by Friday, April 28. This visit
will be scheduled for you, but you are responsible for researching the site and coming up with questions for the expert.
Annelise, Conner, or Elyce will accompany your group. On the afternoons that you do not have field work, you will be
conducting research on your own.

Homework
There will be a handful of tasks throughout the project that you will need to complete outside of class. These will be
communicated to you with advance notice and will have very clear guidelines. You are welcome, and encouraged, to
find time outside of class to connect with your group to ensure that you meet the deadlines.
