WESLEY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

THE WESLEY WORD

September 1, 2011

JESUS INVITES US INTO HIS PRESENCE

Jesus, as Wesley invites people to become part of small group prayer, we also invite the Holy Spirit to wash over us, to guide and lead us on the path you have planned for us. As we lift up a sacrifice of praise, we open our hearts and lives to receive your grace and mercy. You are our Rock and Redeemer, our Savior, the provider of all we have and all we need. Amen

Wesley gives a warm welcome to Kevin and Jason! Kevin Davis has joined the Wesley Staff as our Contemporary Worship Leader. Many of you have gotten to know Kevin the last couple of months as he has stepped in to help with music. Kevin has a day job working for UT Southwestern Medical Center, but brings his musical talents to Wesley for our contemporary service. Kevin has a Bachelors degree in church ministries from Southwestern Assemblies of God University. He also teaches private guitar and piano lessons. He and his wife Libby live in Lewisville while Libby works on her degree to become a teacher. Jason Stillwell has also joined the Wesley Staff as Accompanist for the traditional service. Jason has a day job as a software developer, but has amazing talent on the piano. He has lived in McKinney for about a year. Prior to moving to McKinney he worked for a Meth-

odist church in Oklahoma. He has even worked as part of a trio on board a cruise line for several years. I know you will all enjoy listening to the talented men we have hired to fill the music at both services. Please help the Staff Parish Committee in extending these gentlemen a warm Wesley welcome!

Dear Wesleyans,
Then Jacob woke from his sleep and said, "Surely the LORD is in this place-and I did not know it!" And he was afraid, and said, "How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven." So Jacob rose early in the morning, and he took the stone that he had put under his head and set it up for a pillar and poured oil on the top of it. Genesis 28:16-18 (NRSV) As heroes of the faith go, Jacob is an odd one. He was a cheat and a liar with a track-record of cons and good deal gone bad and messes of his own making. He was no saint, in the typical sense of the word, and yet God plan to save humanity somehow included Jacob as a key figure. He would be re-named Israel, and a nation would spring from his sons. From that line the very Son of God emerged. It seems that Jesus has always been destined to become known through less than perfect people. There was an old custom in Jacobs day of making monuments when you encountered God. Before Jacob came along, his grandfather had a habit of building alters. Later on, the prophet Samuel would erect at stone of help (Ebenezer in the Hebrew.) These served an important purpose: to give people a tangible reminder of Gods faithful activity in our lives so that when times got hard again, the person would remember that the God who triumphed in some past crisis or guided them through some past journey, that same God remains active and able today, tomorrow and forever. I have my share of monuments in my past. I can look back at moments when God did something that changed the course of my life. I remember the hotel room where I asked Jesus in my heart while on a youth retreat. I remember where I was kneeling at the prayer rail at St. Paul UMC Midland when I felt the call to preach. I can describe in vivid detail the coffee table I wept on when God convicted me of some of the sins I backslid into during my early 20s. I could go on. There are many sacred stones in my memory- and each of them speaks, witnessing to the faithfulness of God when my journey gets difficult and my faith falters. So how about you, beloved? Where are the anointed and sacred spaces of your past? Keep them dear to your heart and alive in your memory, for they can explain the new twists God brings your war. Above all, keep your eyes open- for you never know when God's Kingdom may suddenly and wondrously break out into place where you are. When it does, have a stone ready to mark the occasion. Grace and peace,

John

Did you know that when you carry the Bible, Satan has a headache, when you open it, he collapses, when he sees you reading it, he loses his strength, AND when you stand on the Word of God, Satan cant hurt you!

We Confess by Barry Smith

You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Matt. 5: 14-16 We are at a place where all who regard Wesley as their spiritual home are confronted with a personal responsibility. We are venturing through the narrow gate, and whereas I have no doubt we are on course, we are not immune to hardship and trials along the way. It is good, therefore, that from time to time we pause to take stock of where weve been, where we are and where we are going, and to renew our call upon the Holy Spirit to provide the wherewithal to get there. In this spirit it may serve us well to remember that, not too long ago, Wesley celebrated of a century of service. A host of faithful witnesses from every generation endured difficult times so that those who followed could build, in turn, on their achievements. And now its our turn. In the August newsletter I had a poem of encouragement and challenge; one verse read as follows: Give thanks for all those saints who from decades past, Prevailed because they nailed their colors to the mast. Three years ago Wesley took a decision that was symbolic of nailing its colors to the proverbial mast; by electing to become aligned with the Confessing Movement. Then came Councils decision to compile an all embracing strategic plan to plot the future direction of Wesley. Those non-negotiable doctrinal truths and moral directives, fundamental to vibrant Christian faith, and as emphasized by the Confessing Movement, were fashioned into the Strategic Plan as a clear statement of the core beliefs that would govern Wesleys direction into the future. This plan, having been approved by Council, is presently in the implementation stage and we ought all to be encouraged by those elements of progress that are becoming evident: Just days after this newsletter features on the Wesley website Council will meet for the first time in its new format. Working committees such as Trustees, Staff Parish, Education, Finance, Visitors & New members and Nominations are functioning, albeit with openings, in most cases, for additional committee members. The positions of Choir Director, Soloist and Youth Director have been filled and it is anticipated that we will soon be appointing a Director of Childrens Ministries. On September 4 we will be launching our new worship schedule with clearly identifiable traditional and contemporary services at 9:00 am and 11:15 am respectively. Our Adult Education ministry is vibrant and poised for further expansion and the Wesley Christian Preschool continues to be a beacon of excellence in our community. Integral, as they are, to the success of our work and witness going forward we have occasion to be thankful indeed for a pastoral family who, while bringing enthusiasm and energy to Wesley, are also entirely in tune with, and committed to, our core beliefs. Notwithstanding the positive things, and I have mentioned only a few, that are cause for encouragement, a prerequisite to Wesley becoming again a truly viable church, continues to elude us; Im referring to the need for increased visitor attendance at our services with resultant membership growth. The challenge can be simply stated; to attract visitors and potential new members to Wesley. The question; how to do it is simply answered but not so simply implemented. Lets start by considering a couple of popular expectations that are not solutions

It is the responsibility of the pastor. Well it is not really. His responsibility, among other things, is to lead a worship service that will so touch the hearts of visitors that they will wish to return.

Visitors will just arrive as if led by the Holy Spirit to seek out Wesley. This may well apply in some special cases but not as a general rule. Visitors will come in response to our website. Again this may happen from time to time but, again, not as a general rule. So how do we attract visitors and whose responsibility is it? The answer is, by personal invitation, and the responsibility is ours. Although we are charged to go further than this in the Great Commission, the thought of approaching strangers, or near strangers, with an invitation to attend church, doesnt sit well with some. Lets look at several ways in which even the most reserved among us can play our part in inviting visitors to Wesley:

Strike up a conversation with a friend or relative as to the positive things that are happening at Wesley; for example, how you are been blessed during the worship services and the wonderful fellowship that exists in the Sunday School group you attend. Introduce to the conversation an invitation to accompany you to church on a specific Sunday.

Use email or the personal message section on facebook to do the same. There is still something very personal and appealing about receiving a card in the post. There are many accounts of Christians, some of whom are house-bound, turning the use of cards and letters into effective ministries. If you know of someone clearly in need of a spiritual home but, for some reason, you would rather not approach them yourself, pass the information on to the Pastor. Finally, as Christians, we need always to be mindful that often the greatest and most enduring influence we have on someone else derives not from what we say but from what they see in us. Lets ensure that the light from our lives brings glory to our Father who is in heaven.

REACHING OUT 2011-2012

I hope your excitement is still building. The Slaughter teachers are excited. They visited our campus on August 15th, as they ran their version of the Amazing Race. Each grade-level team played ring toss and each teacher received a small gift from Wesley before leaving on the next leg of their race. Pictures were taken of the teams and are posted on the board in the Narthex. They are a great group of ladies and gentleman, who were very appreciative of what Wesley did for them. Hosting Slaughter staff. We didnt host the teachers on our campus, instead we brought breakfast to them. They really enjoyed and were truly grateful for the pigs-in-a-blanket, the special treat from Nothing Bunt Cakes, orange juice and coffee. Thank you to Susan Hines for helping cook, deliver and cleanup. Your hands were a blessing!! Back to School Prayer Walk. A couple from Stonebridge UMC came and the three of us walked around Slaughter, praying the Back to School Prayer. It was hot so I know many of you were inside praying. Thank you!! If you didnt pick-up the flyer and want to pray this prayer throughout the year, its reprinted below.

Starting Point Flag Pole: Gods Presence Holy God, King of glory, we praise you that you are on this campus and will remain there at all times. Thank you for the godly men and women you have called into service at this school. Exert your holy influence on all who have authority over these students, including principals, teachers, nurses, counselors and other support staff, to act in the best interests of these students. Settle your presence on this school so that the students here will discover who you created them to be, the gifts youve given them and what purpose you intend for their lives. All respond: Lord, hear our prayer. One-quarter Point: Gods Protection Lord, as our shield, thank you for spreading your protection over these students. We praise you for being their mighty fortress. No one is exempt from trials in this world, and we dont know the difficulties they face each day, but you do. Be present with them; come quickly to their rescue, be their rock of refuge. Protect them physically, emotionally, and spiritually so they can realize your full potential and recognize your sovereignty. All respond: Lord, hear our prayer. Half-Way Point: Gods Leadership Heavenly Father, we thank you for our McKinney School District and for Slaughter Elementary. We pray for all the men and women who have authority over these students. Pour out your spirit on these leaders and make your Word known to them. Light in them a desire to do what is right in your sight. We pray for peace and harmony among the staff. We ask that you give teachers gently words of truth to build up their students and the godly character as much as knowledge is their goal in the classroom. We pray that the students, in obedience to you, submit to the authorities you have placed over them. All respond: Lord, hear our prayer. Half-Way Point: Gods Glory Let your glory be revealed at this school, Lord. As you continue to complete the good work you have begun in these students, we pray that they will find joy in life at school, either through academics, sports, music or other activities. We pray that you will continue to reveal yourself your power, your mercy and your love and that more students and staff will choose to be examples of Christ to those around them in conduct, in word, in love and in faith. Lord, find you faithful children within this school and use them to be a light on campus, letting your light so shine that others see their good works and believe in you. All respond: Lord, hear our prayer. Back at Starting Point: Summary Prayer Holy Father, as we have circled this building with our prayers, we ask that you encircle this school and all who enter it with you presence, your protection, your leadership and your glory. We celebrate your presence today, and we praise you for hearing our prayers. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.

Look for the sale flyers and coupons in the Sunday papers. The prices are GREAT!!! Become a Mentor, Tutor or Volunteer. I pray each of you have taking this to God to see if He is leading you to serve as a mentor, tutor or volunteer. Being a Mentor is simply being a friend and meeting with a child for 30 minutes once a week before school or during lunch. Being a tutor is giving a child a little extra help. Being a volunteer has a huge menu of opportunities to use wide range of skills. Once again, here are the dates for the required REACH Mentor Training that will be held on the Wesley campus. Other dates are available through the Partners in Education Department of MISD. Sept 25 at 5:00 pm, Sept 29 at 7:00 and Oct 1 at 10:00 am. Sign-up sheets are on the display board in the Narthex. The work date for this has been pushed out. Watch for dates and times, possibly the week between Christmas and New Years. This last opportunity is not Slaughter specific. WESLEY WATCHMEN
Isaiah 62:6 7: I have posted watchmen on your wall [Wesley]: they will never be silent day or night. You who call on the Lord, give yourself no rest, and give Him no rest until He establishes [Wesley] and makes her the praise of the earth. A powerful statement from God, given through Isaiah for the city of Jerusalem. Wesley needs more watchmen to pray in small groups throughout each week. She needs every man, woman, child, and youth praying at some point during each day. Two Watchmen Groups were started about 6 weeks ago to pray for Wesley, the UMC, McKinney, our nation, and the world. One meets at 6:50 pm on Wednesday evenings and the other at 2:00 pm on Thursday afternoons. Please be in prayer about joining one of these groups or starting one with a couple of friends, or with your family during your devotional time at home. A Watchmen outline can be found on the Usher's Table in the Narthex. As you start a group, please let Jayne Wolfe know, so we can rejoice with you and uphold you in prayer. God is healing Wesley and doing a new thing!! Come, says the Lord, be a part of what I AM doing.
