Energy Resilience in Hospitals

Abstract:
Energy resilience in hospitals is a critical issue, given their role as critical infrastructure and the reliance on
an uninterrupted energy supply for patient care. The research aims to explore the importance of enhancing
energy resilience in hospitals, the strategies to improve energy resilience, and the concept of energy
resilience in hospitals. Hospitals are critical infrastructure, and the provision of an uninterrupted energy
supply is essential for patient care, particularly in critical care units. Energy disruptions can have severe
consequences, including interruption of medical procedures, equipment failures, and potentially life-
threatening situations. Hence, enhancing energy resilience in hospitals is critical to ensure the continuity of
patient care (Geoff 2012).
According to a study by (Asadi et al. 2020), energy resilience in hospitals is essential in ensuring the
provision of uninterrupted medical services during power outages. The study highlights the importance of
energy resilience in hospitals, particularly in developing countries with inadequate power supplies. It
emphasizes the need for hospitals to adopt renewable energy sources, energy-efficient technologies, and
backup power systems to improve energy resilience and ensure the continuity of patient care.
These strategies include renewable energy sources, energy-efficient technologies, and energy storage
systems. The integration of these strategies can improve energy efficiency, reduce energy costs, and provide
a reliable and resilient energy supply to hospitals. According to a study by (Farag et al. 2021), the integration
of renewable energy sources, energy-efficient technologies, and energy storage systems can significantly
improve energy resilience in hospitals. The study highlights the case of a hospital in Egypt that achieved
energy resilience by installing a solar photovoltaic system, energy-efficient lighting, and an energy storage
system. The hospital was able to reduce its energy costs, improve energy efficiency, and ensure an
uninterrupted energy supply during power outages.
Energy resilience is the ability of a hospital to maintain its critical functions during energy disruptions or
outages. It involves ensuring an uninterrupted energy supply to critical equipment and areas, maintaining
patient safety and comfort, and minimizing disruption to medical procedures. Achieving energy resilience
in hospitals requires a holistic approach that considers the hospital's energy needs, the local energy
infrastructure, and the community's energy resilience strategies.
In conclusion, enhancing energy resilience in hospitals is critical to ensure the continuity of patient care.
Strategies such as renewable energy sources, energy-efficient technologies, and energy storage systems can
improve energy resilience in hospitals. Achieving energy resilience requires a holistic approach that
considers the hospital's energy needs and the local energy infrastructure.
