FINAL YEAR PROJECT 2020
Executive summary
In any aspect, knowledge of construction engineering should be supported with practical experi-
ence. This course strengthens student’s knowledge regarding structural design and analysis of
buildings.
The content of the report is divided into six chapters. The first chapter is introduction part. It
gives introduction to construction, design data and materials and loadings. The second chapter
focuses on analysis and design of roof. The project holds both truss type and slab type roof. De-
termination of EGA sheet, analysis and design of purlin, truss design are included.
On the third chapter of the project report, it explains about slab design and analysis. This in-
cludes moment distribution and adjustment for each panel. Next, the fourth chapter describes
frame analysis. On this topic, weight of each load, center of mass, base shear forces are calcu-
lated and distributed on each floor.
The fifth chapter describes beam and column design. This design is held by using ETABS out-
put. And finally on chapter six foundation designs takes place. In each parts of the chapter, we
tried our best to make every single point clear. And finally, general conclusions and recommen-
dation are described. This report includes some figures and tables from EBCS.

INTRODUCTION
FINAL YEAR PROJECT 2020
1. INTRODUCTION
Construction of a reliable building requires numerous techniques and in depth knowhow of Civil
Engineering. The objective of this project is to be able to make the structural design of a building
based on what we have studied in the past academic years. This paper consists of structural anal-
ysis and design of building of hospital which is G +4 reinforced concrete building located in
ADAMA with site altitude of 1712m.
The structural design of this building involves design of slab type and truss type roof, stairs and
landings, beams, columns, floor slabs, foundation, and analysis of frames.

1.3 Loading
Since the sit e is located in ADAMA, according to EBCS-8/95, in addition to vertical loading
earth quake loading was considered. The major loading considered are:
Vertical loading: Dead load (DL) – (self - weight, wall load and finishing load roof load-
ing)
Live load:
Lateral loading: Earth quake load in X &Y direction
Wind load
In general the total loadings make up different combinations which are listed below.

ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF ROOF
Page | 6
FINAL YEAR PROJECT 2020
Wind act directly on the external surfaces of enclosed structures, through porosity of the external
surface, internal surface through opening. Wind pressure act on areas of the surfaces producing
forces perpendicular to the surface of the structure or on individual cladding or covering compo-
nents.
The effect of wind on structures is significant on light and dynamic structures. It does have con-
siderable effect on vertically standing walls, columns and beams etc. Therefore; its effect can be
easily studied on roof structures such as truss structures and flat slabs. Therefore, our analysis on
wind load actions and its design will focus on roofs analysis and design and calculation of wind
forces on flat roofs.
The building is located in ADAMA city where there are some buildings around and it’s
categorized to suburban city.
According to EBCS-1, 1995, it is belongs to terrain category Iv.
The variables for terrain category III are:
Terrain factor, KT = 0.22
Minimum height, Zmin = 8m
Roughness length, Zo = 0.3m
Structural design of a G+6 building at ADAMA the area where the building is going to be placed
has an altitude of 1284.5m, for which its air Density is,
ρ =1.026 Kg/m3 by interpolation ……………. from (table 3.1, EBCS-1, 1995)

i. External wind pressure
External pressure is the wind pressure acting on the external surface of a structure.
According to EBCS-1, Art 3.5.2, the wind pressure acting on the external surface of a structure

Pressure coefficients
To calculate the external and internal pressure coefficients, Cpe and Cpei, we divide the roof into
the following zones. The magnitude of the coefficient s depends on the loaded area of the roof.
Different zones of the loaded area are subjected to different magnitude.
The roof has two mono pitch with in deferent dimension (in three wind direction 0 o, 90o, and
180o) but we do for smaller one for considering more wind pressure effect which is governing
one because in large cover area expected pressure is lower than to that of smaller one.

3.2.2Moment Calculation
Coefficient Method
Maximum moments for individual slab panels with edges either simply supported or fully fixed
are calculated as
1. The ratio of the actual support moment to the bending moment of fully fixed slab, or the
ratio of the width of fixed to the width of the simply supported part of the edge is
evaluated.
2. The bending moments of the slab are then computed by interpolating between different
conditions……………………. [EBCS-2, 1995, Art 3.3.1]

Strip Method
Advantages:
The strip method gives results on the safe side, which is certainly preferable in practice.
The strip method is a design method by which the needed reinforcement can be calcu-
lated.
In this project, we have used strip method for panels with irregular shapes but approximately
changed to rectangle.

3.2.7Load transfer to beam
According to EBCS-2/1995, the design loads on supporting beam and the design shear force of
two-way slab subjected to a uniformly distributed load considering torsion at corners may be de-
termined using the following equation.
Vx = βvx * Pd * Lx
Vy = βvy * Pd * Lx
For analysis to use in ETABS the dead load and live load should transfer separately.

4. FRAME ANALYSIS
4.1 Introduction
Earthquake is movements with in the Earth’s crust cause stress to build up at points of weakness
when the stress finally exceeds the strength of the rock, the rock fractures along a fault at a zone
of existing weakness within the rock. The stored energy is suddenly released as an earthquake.
Energy released radiates in all directions from its source, the focus. Energy is in the form of
waves.
Causes of earthquake:
Volcanic eruption
Tectonic movements of the earth’s crust.
Explosion of nuclear and chemical devices
Collapse of underground cavities
Generally, there are two method of Earth quake Analysis. These are

Response spectrum Analysis
Since the requirements for static method is more satisfied than dynamic, we used static method
for the analysis of earthquake. The nature of supporting ground has influence on the seismic ac-
tion. This shall generally be accounted for by considering subsoil classes.
According to EBCS_1-1995, for the ground condition in the absence of more accurate informa-
tion on soil condition, the seismic action may be determined assuming ground conditions subsoil
class B.

For buildings, a design method may be used which assumes the compression members to be iso-
lated. The additional eccentricity induced in the column by its deflection is then calculated as a
function of slenderness ratio and curvature at the critical section.

In beam-and-column type plane frames in building structures with beams connecting each col-
umn at each story level may be classified as non-sway for a given load case, when first-order the-
ory is used, the horizontal displacements in each story due to the design loads (both horizontal
and vertical), plus the initial sway imperfection satisfy the following criteria:
Nδ

HL
Where: δ is the horizontal displacement at the top of the story, relative to the bottom of the story.

FINAL YEAR PROJECT 2020
H is the total horizontal reaction at the bottom of the story
Since the columns are in non-sway mode, it is better to assume that the whole frame is a non-
sway type frame. In addition, by considering the frame as sway, the design of the columns will
be a safe design.

Unbalanced moments from beams
The bending moments can be converted in to un-equivalent axial load applied at eccentricity.
Therefore columns should be designed for the design moment obtained from the total eccentric-
ity.

CHAPTER SIX
FOUNDATION DESIGN
Page | 268
FINAL YEAR PROJECT 2020
6.1 Introduction
Foundation is that part of a structure which transfers the load of the structure to soil on which it
rests. The main objectives of a foundation are the following
To distribute the weight of the structure over larger area so as to avoid over loading of the
soil beneath.
To load the sub structure evenly so as to avoid unequal settlement.
To provide a level surface for building operations
To take the sub structure deep into the ground and thus increase its stability and avoid over
turning
Once the size of the footing is determined, the footing must be designed structurally for
The critical section for punching is at a distance “1.5d” from the face of the column (Ac-
cording to EBCS – 2, 1995)
The critical section for punching shear is at a distance of “0.5” from the face of the col-
umn. (According to EBCS-2, 1985)
We can use one of the above two methods in footing depth determination.
Page | 269
FINAL YEAR PROJECT 2020
The critical section for wide beam shear is at a distance of “d” from the face of the col-
umn and it is a one way shear consideration in both axis. (According to both EBCS-2,
1985, &1995).
Thus, let categorize into three groups and take the largest factored load and moment.
There are 8 factored loads and its moments, from these the largest load is 567.23KN,
There are 7 factored loads and its moments, from these the largest load is 882.5,
There are 6 factored loads and its moments, from these the largest load is 1071.52KN,
There are 6 factored loads and its moments, from these the largest load is 1480.1KN,
There are 6 factored loads and its moments, from these the largest load is 1959.32KN,
Page | 270
FINAL YEAR PROJECT 2020
Due to moment (eccentric load) the base area should be modified or the axial force shifts from
the geometric centre of the footing.
Assumptions
Since the load from the superstructure is factored. Therefore, the allowable bearing capacity of
1.3+1.4
the soil must be factored by an average i.e. =1.45

Determination of depth, D
In the structural design of footings adequacy of the thickness of the footing and provide the nec-
essary reinforcement to withstand punching shear and shear diagonal tension (wide beam shear)
moment and bond stress should be checked.
Page | 273
FINAL YEAR PROJECT 2020
Net punching shear force, Pp is given by
Pp = Pt – σ avgAc
For the structural design, a simplifying assumption is made in which the contact pressure
distribution is assumed uniform and it magnitude is taken as the average of the each side contact
pressure.

In the structural design of footings adequacy of the thickness of the footing and provide the nec-
essary reinforcement to withstand punching shear and shear diagonal tension (wide beam shear)
moment and bond stress should be checked.
Pp = PT – σavgAc
For the structural design, a simplifying assumption is made in which the contact pressure
distribution is assumed uniform and it magnitude is taken as the average of the each side contact
pressure.

FINAL YEAR PROJECT 2020
Conclusion
Every structural design must aim at creating a structure that is structural safe and economically
feasible. As a result all the design procedures must be in accordance with these two important
Page | 286
FINAL YEAR PROJECT 2020
principles. Sometimes due to sophistication of architectural drawings it is hard to adhere to both
this principles simultaneously. The purpose of the building makes it inherently expensive since it
is intended to be a G+4 hospital building. It is also relatively high rising building.
For designing and analysis of this G+4 building EBCS code of 1995 was the main and funda-
mental reference for any relevant assumptions carried out in this project papers. On analysis of
this project many tedious calculation works were compiled with ETABS and the result was taken
for designing purpose, as the adequacy of each building elements was understandable by the pro-
gram and can generate the output results with acceptable sign convention.
From this what we conclude is that if this program is not available it was such difficult to com-
plete this project with in this time constraint. In accordance with the design and analysis, the
structure is economical and safe against lateral and different load application, but for actual im-
plementation as the soil bearing capacity for the foundation was taken from relevant assumption,
it needs further soil exploration and modification of foundations accordingly.
In general, we have tried to make the structure as economically as possible by systematically ad-
justing the design as well as the detail drawings.

FINAL YEAR PROJECT 2020
Recommendation
It has been quite challenging to prepare a precise reinforcement detail; however, as it is essential
to achieve a quality performance of a structure under the situation it has been designed. Also we
recommend that structural as well as high way software like SAP,ETABS should be given in ap-
propriate and scheduled way.
In this projectthere is time constraint starting from late data provisionfor the groups till compil-
ing and submission of the documents thereby coincides
with exam schedule. Thus we recommend that the data have to be given on time
at the beginning of second semester likewise submission and presentation date
should be at least some days after examination.
