1.1.1 Content principle

Assessment should be a direct reflection of the mathematics


that is the most important for learners to learn.
Assessment should be anchored in important mathematics content. The critical
knowledge aspects of true mathematics understanding should be tested – those
aspects that will be used in learners’ lives and in later studies. The assessment of
the skills that are central in mathematical processes – reasoning, problem solving,
communication and connecting ideas – goes with the testing of knowledge.
1.1.2. Equity principle

Assessment should support every learner’s opportunity


to learn important mathematics
Assessments tasks should be designed such that every learner has a fair chance
to display their best knowledge, skills, reasoning and problem solving. All learners
should have access to challenging mathematics, however, not only the higher
order thinking is tested, because that would exclude learners who have only a
functional command of the mathematical concepts. In applying the equity
principle, there must be room for different ways of understanding, different
backgrounds playing a role in the problem solving and different methods of solving
problems.

1.1.3. Learning principles.

Assessment should enhance mathematics learning and support good instructional


practice.
Assessment should contribute directly to mathematics learning. Often, a quiz or a
test measures routine knowledge and skill and does not enrich learning. The way
assessment tasks are set, should be similar to the way learning tasks are set.
