Q) A PCS licensee plans to build out a 30 MHz license in band of 1850 MHz to 1880 MHz (reverse link) and

1930 MHz to 1960 MHz (forward link). They are intended to use a 1900 MHz radio equipment that provide a GSM-like service and support 8 users per 200 kHz radio channel using TDMA. Based on the link budget calculation, the RF designer decided to use a cluster size of 4 and cell radius of 12.56 km. a) How many GSM radio channels can be used by the licensee? b) If each BS can support a maximum of 64 radio channels, how many users can be served by a BS during a fully loaded operation? c) How many (i) cells (base station), (ii) radio channels, and (iii) total users channels are available to cover a city of 2500 sq km circular shaped area? d) If each BS costs $ 500,000 and each radio channel within the BS costs $ 50,000, what is the cost of the system in c? Solution) a) Given total bandwidth (one way) BWtotal 30MHz , the channel bandwidth Bc 200kHz , then the total number of full duplex channels is: 30MHz Nc 150 . 200kHz b) Number of users that can be served by a BS during fully loaded operation is: 8x64=512 (since TDMA is used, then 8 users can share the same channel).

c) (i) Number of cells: If we consider hexagonal cells, and since the surface area of a hexagon is: S cell then:
Ncells Number of cells

Total area 2500 6.092 N cells 7 3 3 2 3 3 2 R (12.567) 2 2 We can see that the reverse and forward channels in each pair are separated by 80 MHz.

In order to have the maximal separation between adjacent cells, the channels will be allocated as follows (for 4-cell reuse): Cell 1 Channel 1 Channel 5 Channel 9 Channel 145 Channel 149 Cell 2 Channel 2 Channel 6 Channel 10 Channel 146 Channel 150 Cell 3 Channel 3 Channel 7 Channel 11 Channel 147 Cell 4 Channel 4 Channel 8 Channel 12 Channel 148

Cells 1 and 2 will use 38 channels; cells 3 and 4 will use 37 channels.

(ii) 7 BSs are available. Total radio channels: number of channels per cell X number of cells=150/4 X 7=262. Total user channels: Total radio channels X 8 users per channel=262 X 8=2096. (d) Total cost of BSs=7 X $ 500,000= $ 3,500,000 Total cost of radio channels: 150 X 50,000 = $ 7,500,000. Total cost of system: $ 11,000,000.
