CORE LEARNING AREA:
The subject discusses the characteristics and functions of campus and national papers. It also traces the historical background of the campus
paper in the Philippines. Additionally, it explains the responsibility and standards of a student journalist. This subject expatiates the techniques
and principles of writing journalistic articles, as it simultaneously presents authentic samples printed and published in various campus papers.
The subject also teaches the learner how to ensure grammatical and technical correctness of a written article.
The learners can identify the tenets of journalism, name the functions of and duties of the press, compare and contrast journalism and literature,
explain freedom of the press and critic the strengths and weaknesses of select articles.
CHAPTER 2: The Campus Paper and the Publication Staff
The learners can trace the historical background of campus journalism, identify the duties of the editorial board, distinguish the functions of a
campus paper and critic the characteristics of magazine and newspaper.
The learners can enumerate the characteristics of news, decipher the elements of news, and apply elements of news in specific situations.
The learners can identify various sources of news, determine potential sources of school news, record the ways in news gathering and apply the
news elements in specific situations.
The learners can name the different kinds of lead, apply techniques in writing grammatical-beginning lead, distinguish information in select
leads and organize gathered data into specific news leads.
The learners can identify various types of news story, distinguish the proper uses of transitional devices, evaluate importance of information in
news articles, critic given news concepts and compose a news article out of the given set of data.
The learners can determine the characteristics of feature stories, name the types of features, differentiate news and feature stories, apply
techniques in writing feature articles and formulate mental images based on given motivations.
The learners can identify various types of editorial, distinguish the characteristics of editorial, compare techniques in writing editorial, simulate
an en-board meeting, and defend position on a given issue.
CHAPTER 10: Copyediting: Cleaning the Copy and Writing the Headline
The learners can determine the guidelines in journalistic writing, demonstrate the use of delete symbol, apply copyediting marks, convert verbal
deadwoods into concise word-equivalents, improve sentences culled from newspapers and evaluate submitted article using copyediting symbols.
The learners can apply fundamental and technical rules in journalistic writing, convert wordy expressions into brief words, apply copyediting
marks and compose a bank of newspaper styles.
