CHAPTER I
I. Background of the study
Bougainvillea is an evergreen and woody vine. Most of them have spines and are very
thorny. Bougainvillea is a terrific plant that is planted for terrace and flowery decorations. The
leaves of bougainvillea are ovate, alternately arranged, and simple. The flowers are trumpet-
shaped, small, and white and occur in groups of threes. The shoots, that have been overgrown,
may attach themselves to the surroundings. They will grow best when given enough space to
spread out and should be planted in an area that will allow them a minimum of 5-6 hours of
sunlight every day. Bougainvillea is a genus of thorny ornamental vines, shrubs, and trees native
to South America. The plants are known for their vibrant, papery, and long-lasting bracts that
come in a range of colors such as pink, red, purple, orange, and white. The Bougainvillea is a
member of the Nyctaginaceae family and is named after the French explorer Louis Antoine de
Bougainville who first discovered the plant in Brazil in the 18th century.

Bougainvillea plants thrive in warm, tropical climates and are commonly found in
countries such as Brazil, Peru, Argentina, and Colombia. They are often used in landscaping as a
hedge, climbing vines, or container plant due to their hardiness and drought tolerance.
Bougainvillea is also a popular choice for bonsai enthusiasts due to its stunning blooms and
adaptability to pruning. In addition to its ornamental uses, Bougainvillea has several medicinal
properties. The leaves of the plant have been used in traditional medicine to treat a variety of
ailments such as coughs, colds, and fevers. The plant contains several chemical compounds such
as quercetin, kaempferol, and anthocyanins that have been shown to have anti-inflammatory and
antioxidant properties. The flowers, alone or in combination with other medicinal plants, have
long been used in Mexican traditional medicine for the treatment of coughs and respiratory
problems. A related species, B. glabra, has been found to have important properties as a botanical
insecticide.

In the language of flowers, bougainvillea stands for passion. To the Victorians, a gift of
bougainvillea was meant to ignite passion. In other parts of the world, bougainvillea flowers
stand for welcoming visitors, peace, and free trade. Bougainvillea lights up any landscape or
floral gift with its stunning, colorful bracts. Bougainvillea has a nice fragrance that is like that of
the Honeysuckle plant. In cool or dry conditions, it can be semi-deciduous.

II. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

1. How long will our perfume last?

2. What is the difference between our perfume from other perfumes?
3. Why is our perfume counsel over other homemade perfumes?
4. What are the ethical considerations should be considered?
5. What are the benefits of our product?

III. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Upon the completion of the study, it will contribute the following;

Students. This research will help them to gain knowledge and learn about some flowers
that can be used for any purpose such as making your own product. It gives them the idea to
make their own product and make their own scent using those rare flowers that are not usually
used for making a product.

Communities. The findings of this study will lead them to search for some rare flowers
that aren’t usually used for perfume and to lead them to know that there are flowers that are
useful not just for decoration but also can be used on making your own scent. Also, help them to
dig more knowledge about the plants around them which are commonly seen on the sidewalk,
and search more about the hidden ability of each flower that can be seen every day in our life.

Society. This study will prevent them from destroying some plants without knowing what
a plant can do and its uses. This study will lead them to look for some common flowers yet
undiscovered abilities.

Future Researchers. This research will serve as their basis for the bougainvillea flower,
this study can help them to dig more about the bougainvillea flower and its abilities. This study
will also give them the inspiration to search for some plants that can be used for some
experiments or can be used for making a product using flowers.

IV. SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

The study is primarily focused on the potential of the bougainvillea flower as a perfume
product. It will focus on what will be the scent of the bougainvillea if it is used as a perfume and
how it will long. The study begins from March 2023 to April 2023 because the product must
have enough time to let the aroma of the bougainvillea flower appear.

VII. RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS

The scent of bougainvillea flowers contains unique aromatic compounds that can be
extracted and used to create a high-quality perfume with desirable olfactory properties."

This hypothesis could be tested through a series of experiments, such as extracting and analyzing
the volatile organic compounds present in bougainvillea flowers, conducting sensory evaluations
of different bougainvillea perfume formulations, and comparing the results to those of other
floral perfumes. The research could also investigate the market potential and consumer
preferences for bougainvillea perfume.

VIII. REVIEW LITERATURE

Bougainvillea is a genus of flowering plants native to South America, but it is now

widely cultivated in many parts of the world due to its beautiful, colorful blooms and its ability
to thrive in a range of climates. Bougainvillea is often used in landscaping and gardening, and it
is also popular as a potted plant for indoor and outdoor decoration.

One of the most well-known features of bougainvillea is its papery, brightly colored
bracts, which are often mistaken for flowers. These bracts come in a range of colors, including
pink, purple, red, orange, and white, and they can create a stunning display when the plant is in
full bloom.

In addition to its aesthetic appeal, bougainvillea has been studied for its potential health
benefits. For example, studies have shown that bougainvillea extracts may have anti-
inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which could make them useful in treating a range of
health conditions. Some studies have also suggested that bougainvillea extracts may have anti-
cancer properties, although more research is needed to confirm this.

Overall, bougainvillea is a fascinating plant with a long history of use in horticulture and
traditional medicine. Its colorful bracts and potential health benefits make it a popular choice for
gardeners, herbalists, and researchers alike.
