ODOUR CONTROL SYSTEM - AN ESSENTIAL COMPONENT OF A SUGAR REFINERY PLANT

INTRODUCTION
Breathing clean and fresh air is not just a luxury, but is in-fact one of the most important
natural pre-condition for a peaceful coexistence of the humankind. The introduction of
harmful substances into the atmosphere causes harm to all the living organism creating worse
scenarios and it has become a major environmental issue worldwide with increasing public
demand for better control of highly polluted odorous emission. The following are the benefits
of Odour Control System:

 Protects your investment in the plant equipment.

 Protects your own health, the surrounding biological life and Mother Nature.
 To comply the emission norms and standards set by the PCB.
APPLICATION OF ODOUR CONTROL SYSTEMS

 Sewage / Effluent Treatment Plants (STP/ETP) - Municipal, Industrial & Domestic

 Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Management Plants
 Process Industries such as Shrimp Feed Manufacturing, Dairy & Milk Products, Sugar
Refineries, Breweries, Paper & Pulp Processing, Tanneries, Pharmaceutical, etc.
ODOUR CONTROL SYSTEM AN ESSENTIAL PART OF A SUGAR REFINERY PLANT

 The foul gases are not only odorous, but

toxic in nature and can slowly degrade the
surrounding biological ecosystem including
all living beings.
 These gases are corrosive in nature,
corroding and eroding the equipment such
as pumps, blowers, railings, platforms,
structural steel, etc. all made of metal.
 Emissions from process industries need to
adhere according to the stringent rules and Equipment Corrosion in Sugar Refinery due to
regulation set by the Pollution Control Odorous Toxic Gases
Board (PCB).
TOXIC ODOUROUS GASES EMITTED FROM A SUGAR REFINERY

Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S) and Ammonia (NH3) are the most pre-dominant odour causing toxic
gases amongst others like Nitrogen Oxides (NOx), Carbon Monoxide (CO), Sulphur Di-Oxide
(SO2), Particulate Matter (PM) identified from a Sugar Refinery Process Plant.

AREAS WHERE THESE GASES ARE GENERATED
The characteristic foul odour is associated with the molasses that is present in the raw sugar
by nature. The intensity of the foul odour emitted from this raw sugar is associated with
moisture conditions, temperature levels and storage time.
Handling of this sugar (sudden disturbance) during production processes is also a potential
source of these odours. Raw foul odour of sugar can be detected in production processes such
as clarification, mingler, affination, melter, filter press, decolourization, evaporation, etc.
Typical compounds generating foul odour in these processes are Acetic acid, Ethyl alcohol,
Butyl alcohol, bacterial decomposition of organic matter and Sulphur compounds (H 2S).
The following areas are generally identified in any sugar refinery with requirement of odour
control systems:

 Storage Building (Silo Bottoms)

 Granulator Room
 White Sugar Packaging
SUITABLE ODOUR CONTROL SYSTEM TECHNOLOGIES
The type and concentration of odorous gases
generated in the plant play a crucial part in the
technology selection of odour control systems.
The specification for each plant may or may not
differ, but mostly each project is unique and
custom tailored by LIKU-TECH. We are the only
leading odour control system manufacturers,
who are specialized in manufacturing and
supply of all types of odour control systems
under a single roof.
For a Sugar Refinery Plant, in case of high concentration of toxic gases, the following systems
will be suitable for 100% odour removal efficiency:

 Bio-Trickling Filter (Primary Stage) + Activated Carbon Filter (Polishing Stage)

 Chemical Scrubber (Primary Stage) + Activated Carbon Filter (Polishing Stage)
And for low to medium concentration of toxic gases, the following system will be suitable for
100% odour removal efficiency:

 Gas Washer + Bio-Filter
