Odour Control Systems For Sugar Refineries PDF
INTRODUCTION
Breathing clean and fresh air is not just a luxury, but is in-fact one of the most important
natural pre-condition for a peaceful coexistence of the humankind. The introduction of
harmful substances into the atmosphere causes harm to all the living organism creating worse
scenarios and it has become a major environmental issue worldwide with increasing public
demand for better control of highly polluted odorous emission. The following are the benefits
of Odour Control System:
Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S) and Ammonia (NH3) are the most pre-dominant odour causing toxic
gases amongst others like Nitrogen Oxides (NOx), Carbon Monoxide (CO), Sulphur Di-Oxide
(SO2), Particulate Matter (PM) identified from a Sugar Refinery Process Plant.

AREAS WHERE THESE GASES ARE GENERATED
The characteristic foul odour is associated with the molasses that is present in the raw sugar
by nature. The intensity of the foul odour emitted from this raw sugar is associated with
moisture conditions, temperature levels and storage time.
Handling of this sugar (sudden disturbance) during production processes is also a potential
source of these odours. Raw foul odour of sugar can be detected in production processes such
as clarification, mingler, affination, melter, filter press, decolourization, evaporation, etc.
Typical compounds generating foul odour in these processes are Acetic acid, Ethyl alcohol,
Butyl alcohol, bacterial decomposition of organic matter and Sulphur compounds (H 2S).
The following areas are generally identified in any sugar refinery with requirement of odour
control systems:
