Jibaro Summary

 The story of a siren and her revenge on a deaf knight.


The meeting
 Soldiers marched in a forest and they are stopped by some weird looking guys (priest) from advancing any further. The
bejeweled woman shows up and dances on the surface of the lake and lets out a scream as soldiers are entranced by it and
start running into the lake to reach her. In the process, soldiers up killing each other and others end up drowning in the
lake. But only one man remains unaffected. The deaf soldier is left unaware of the situation and sees his comrades run to
their death.
The night

 The siren finds herself intrigued by the man. The soldier runs away. That night the siren finds the soldier and lays down
next to him. The following morning, the soldier wakes up with a start and as the siren runs away, he tries to catch hold of
her hand but gets a gash from one of her jewels.
The Siren Chase
 Because of man’s interest on jewelries, he follows her as she runs back into the water. He manages to walk across the
waterfall landing and reaches the siren who proceeds to kiss him but he later knocks her out and starts plucking the
jewelry from her body. In a way, he is ripping off her skin and the siren starts bleeding. He then pushes her body into the
river and tries to run away with his spoils.
Jibaro Ending
 The siren's body starts turning the whole river red with her blood. The soldier takes a sip of the bloody water due to
exhaustion; he suddenly gets his hearing back that freaks him out. He finds his way to the lake where the siren has
regained consciousness and is weeping at the state of her bare body. She lets out a scream again. This time, he can hear
her scream and runs towards her. The soldier then dies as his comrades did.

The last of the Sama-sellang


Basically, talks about the death of a creature, Sama-sellang
- Travel to Mr. Tsai’s house, previous day stormy but not today so smooth travel
- Smell stinks on the way
- Oysters around the house, rot stinks is stronger upstairs
- Sama-sellang – human-whale chimera; sunken eyes, mouth that looks like a tear in the face, fang-like teeth, scale/skin was
blue-gray, six feet, pink and green,
- It was abuse by the greed of humans to fetch it’s gem-like skin

The narrator describes their visit to an island in search of the Sama-sellang, which is a legendary sea creature with gem-like
scales that is on the brink of extinction due to the underground trade of its scales. They meet an old man, Mr. Tsai, who cares
for an bedridden Sama-sellang in a crude living space. The creature is a shadow of its former self, with many of its scales
repeatedly scraped off, leaving burns and pink, oozing patches on its body. The narrator offers to take it to a city vet, but Mr.
Tsai declines, knowing that the creature is beyond recovery. The narrator reflects on the warmth and magnificence of the
creature and wonders if there is anything that can be done to save it.
In this excerpt, a dying creature called sama-sellang is being comforted by the old man, Mr. Tsai, and the narrator. The
narrator reaches for a vial of amber liquid to help the creature sleep, but the sama-sellang reacts negatively to it. As the
creature's condition worsens, Mr. Tsai embraces it and the two bodies seem to merge. The sama-sellang lets out a final growl
before passing away, and the narrator quietly leaves the scene. The old man decides not to report the incident to the city
council and believes that the creature belongs to the ocean.
