Please read well the instruction on quiz 5.

Quiz 1:
Name:__________________
Time/Day of Class:______________

Instruction: Recall an incident in your life in which you decided to violate a non-moral standard
in order to follow a moral standard. In two or three paragraphs, narrate your experience in such
a way that the four characteristics of moral standards are illustrated.

Example:

Let me share my experience so you can have a pattern for your answer:

I love gardening. I take care of plants, especially bonsai trees, but not because I want to
make profit. I simply like to watch these as masterpieces, and relax in their midst especially
when I am too stressed. It has been a rule then in my life not to sell my plants because I value
their beauty so much. But there was a point in my life when I had to violate this rule. I had to sell
many of my plants. This happened when my father died and my mom was not yet qualified to
avail of her pension. My sister was still looking for a job, and my niece was only one year old.
The business of my brother-in-law was not making a decent profit. I had a job, but my salary was
very meager. In short, our resources were not sufficient especially that my niece needed
expensive milk for her development.

One evening, as I was watching my plants, I overheard that my sister needed to buy
milk, but there was no budget for that week. I thought then of selling some of my plants. I
valued my plants so much, but at that point, the well-being of my niece was more important.
Yes, I had to violate my rule on not selling my plants. My niece’s health, after all, was (and
remains) more valuable than my enjoyment of beholding my plants’ beauty. I sold many of my
plants for the health benefit of my niece. People who recognize sound reason, no doubt, will
agree with me that my niece’s healthy life is more important than my beautiful garden.
Now, it is your turn to narrate your story:
