Does automation overcome its benefits than its drawbacks?

Introduction
As technology advances, robots and machines are becoming more sophisticated and capable of
performing tasks previously performed by human operators. Automation is the process by which
machines perform processes with minimal human input. Despite the many benefits, there are
concerns about automation's impact on jobs, pollution, and the economy. It will be interesting to
examine the role of automation and assess whether it is beneficial or detrimental to the economy
as a whole.
Background
An automated system is a mechanical device that is electronically controlled and runs
continuously without the need for continuous operator input. A method, system, or technique for
heavily automating the operation or control of a process. It reduces human involvement thanks to
electronic devices (Mitchell, 2022). A winner-take-all economy, in which the most skilled
workers become wealthy while the rest fall behind, is in fact a threat. Automation is positioned to
eliminate jobs where computers perform better than humans (The Rise in Automation and What
It Means for the Future, 2021).
Body
Arguments in Favor of Automation
The manufacturing sector heavily relies on automation, because it enables higher production
rates with lower costs and resources. These benefits have made automation a more widespread
practice across a wide range of industries.
Companies have used automation as a cost-cutting measure for a while now. Because
automation makes it possible for businesses to produce their goods more quickly, affordably,
and of much higher quality, it has become more widely used in the marketing sector in recent
years. Because marketers want to take advantage of its benefits to boost productivity, the use of
automation is likely to continue to increase (Prasanna, 2022).
It also eliminates human errors. Errors can be costly; in some cases, they result in losses to
businesses of over $62.4 million. Aside from the financial benefits of fewer errors, human
workforce will also feel less burdened, because they will have less time to deal with the
consequences of those errors. This saves the company money by preventing the need for time-
consuming rework and ensuing expensive fines or downtime (Dunlap, 2022).
While automation promotes economic growth, generates jobs, and raises living standards, it can
also pose serious problems for workers and communities, such as job displacement
(unemployment can be a great issue to face in the future), local economic disruption, shifting
skill requirements, and pollution.

Arguments Against Automation

Worker displacement is the main adverse effect of automation. Although automation has many
advantages, it also has a number of serious drawbacks that are displacing a lot of people from
their jobs, because it does not require human labor and only requires a small number of people to
operate or control it (Goswami, 2022).
Huge initial investment is a must need when dealing with automation. Setting up machines in
factories or other establishments requires a sizable initial investment. In addition, experts are
needed to manage the machines and a suitable maintenance budget (Gyani, 2023).
Automation is a contributing factor in industrial pollution. Automation alone could have
significant negative effects, especially on energy use (and emissions generated from the current
energy mix), resource use, and ecosystems, without proper environmental objectives and
management systems (Dusik & Sadler, 2019).

Conclusion
The approach to the disruptions that automation can cause should not be to stifle innovation.
Both the advancement of new technologies and the promise of employment should be
encouraged by policies and reforms. Technology-created opportunities must be available to
workers. By making skills training accessible, ensuring the availability of good jobs, and
enhancing the systems already in place to support those who will transition from declining to
growing occupations, policymakers and employers can assist.
