ABSTRACT

Alocasia macrorrhiza or merely known as Giant Gabi, when planted directly on

the soil outdoors, it could grow up to 15 feet high and spread up. There are many

different varieties of Gabi in the Philippines, in Bicol Region, gabi (A. macrorrhiza) is

identified as one of the priority commodities. As much as to A. macrorrhiza’s different

varieties, each variety also has species in which the others are still up for research and

discovery. In Virac, Catanduanes, specifically in the Barangays of F. Tacorda, Valencia

and San Vicente, it is found that there are three (3) species of A. macrorrhiza and are

abundant to the folksmen of the said barangays. The species of A. macrorrhiza found in

the said barangays in Virac, Catanduanes are Prinsesa, Sinamar and Katigpi are

propagated and found. The researchers studied the frequency, average and its percentage

of the datas’ that are gathered from the survey and interview of the researchers from the

respondents. These were only few of the many species of A. macrorrhiza and the

researchers suggest to conduct similar studies to the other barangays of Virac,

Catanduanes.
