Series and Parallel Circuits

Resistance in Series
Voltage Divider Rule

1
Resistances in Parallel
Three resistances, as joined in Fig.
are said to be connected in parallel.
In case 1) All beginning terminals
are connected together and all ends
terminals are also connected
together, 2) At the beginning and
ends of the terminals, total current
is the sum of the three separate
currents.
Current Divider Rule

V V V R1  R 2
I1  , I 2  , and I  where R 
R1 R2 R R1  R 2
I1 R2 R2
  , or I 1  I
I R1  R 2 R1  R 2
I2 R1 R1
Also ,  , or I 2  I
I R1  R 2 R1  R 2
Example 1
What is the equivalent resistance between terminals X and Y ?
Example 2:

In the circuit shown in figure, find the battery current. All

resistances are in ohms.
Example
Find the equivalent resistance of the circuit given in Fig. 1.51 (a)
between the following points (i) A and B (ii) C and D (iii) E and F.
