Everyone is enjoying the ball that is currently taking place. Dancing

joyfully, until a group of people, dressed in the highest fashion,
enters the room. GEORGE BINGLEY, CAROLINE BINGLEY, AND FITZWILLIAM
DARCY.
Mr and Ms. Bingley, and Mr. Darcy will stand first for a while near
the door during this dialogue

(Everyone stops dancing) (SOUND DIRECTOR CUE: PAUSE PLAYING MUSIC,

SAME SONG, READY ON 0:22)

ELIZABETH
So which one is Mr Bingley?

CHARLOTTE
He is on the right, and on the left is
his sister.

ELIZABETH
And the person with the disagreeable expression?

CHARLOTTE
That is his good friend, Mr Darcy.

(SOUND DIRECTOR CUE: PLAY “MERYTON TOWNHALL” AT 0:22 BUT ON LOW

VOLUME, REPEAT TO THE START IF SONG ENDS)

CUT TO:
(Mr and Mrs. Bennet, the parents of the five sisters, introducing
them.)

Mr. Bennet
This are my daughters, Miss Jane Bennet, Miss Elizabeth Bennet, and
Miss Mary Bennet.
Mrs. Bennet
They’re five actually, the other two are already dancing.

Mr. Bingley
(stares and smiles to Jane shyly)
Delighted to make your aquaintance. Oh I almost forgot, this is Mr.
Darcy of Pemberly, Derbyshire

A stiff bow from Darcy, Elizabeth smiles, Darcy does not.

Mr Bingley
(looks at Jane)
May I invite you for a dance?

Jane
Oh, Of course

TRANSITION

ELIZABETH
Do you dance Mr Darcy?

DARCY
Not if I can help it.

CUTS TO:
Bingley and Darcy talking to each other

BINGLEY
Come Darcy, I must have you dance. I hate to see you just standing
there by yourself

MR DARCY
You know I don’t like it

MR BINGLEY
Upon my word, I've never seen so many
pretty girls in my life.

DARCY
You are dancing with the only beautiful
girl in the room.

Elizabeth overheres their coversation

ELIZABETH
Huh, how prideful of him

(SOUND DIRECTOR CUE: STOP MUSIC)

INT. LONGBOURN - BREAKFAST

SERVANT
A letter addressed to Miss Jane Bennet

(Everyone is shocked and amazed)

MRS. BENNET
Oh my, a blessing from the lord!

JANE
(opens the message)
It is from Miss Bingley! Mr. Bingley, they’re inviting me for dinner!

Lydia
I don’t think he’s good looking anyway

Jane
Can I take the carriage with me?

Mrs Bennet
Certainly not dear, you’re going on horseback

Jane
Horseback?!

INT. LONGBOURN - THE NEXT DAY

ELIZABETH
(reads letter)
"And my kind friends will not hear of me
returning home until I am better -- but do
not be alarmed excepting a sore throat, a.
fever, and a headache there is nothing
wrong with me." This is ridiculous, she caught a cold
because of the rain
ELIZABETH
I am going to Netherfield at once.

MRS BENNET
The horse is with Jane. And the
girls took the carriage to town.

ELIZABETH
Then I will walk there..

MRS BENNET
Walk! You will not be fit to be seen by
the time you get there.

MR BENNET
Why not. We could have them all at Netherfield Hall.

ELIZABETH
I will be fit for Jane which is all I
care about.

INT. NETHERFIELD

FOOTMAN
Miss Elizabeth Bennet

CAROLINE BINGLEY
Oh my, Miss Bennet. Have you walked here?

ELIZABETH
I'm so sorry. How is my sister?

DARCY
(more kindly) She's upstairs.

Elizabeth walks out to go to her sister

CAROLINE BINGLEY
Goodness, did you see her dress? It is covered in mud. And her hair,
it is so messy!

DARCY
I think her concern for her sister does
her credit.

CAROLINE BINGLEY
Oh yes, its shocking to have a bad cold.
I dislike being ill myself.

INT. COUNTRYSIDE
ELIZABETH
We met this man, his name is George Wickham. He’s an officer in the
militia unit. I would say, he’s a handsome gentleman.

ELIZABETH
You're too generous to lend Lydia money.

WICKHAM
I know. Fivepence halfpenny!

LYDIA
I'll pay you back.

WICKHAM
Oh yes. I'll make sure of that.

(They laugh. Elizabeth is really rather taken with him. They walk down
the street.)

ELIZABETH
Will you be stationed here all winter, Mr Wickham?

WICKHAM
That depends. Of course I look forward to action...
(smiles at her)

JANE
Lizzie - look!

(They stop. Jane's face lights up.)

JANE
Mr Bingley !

It is indeed Bingley, walking towards them. He is accompanied by

Darcy.
Bingley goes over to Jane. His open, friendly face is filled with
delight.

BINGLEY
I was on my way to your house.

LYDIA -
Please Mr Bingley, when are you going to
give a ball?

JANE
Lydia!

BINGLEY
I was just waiting until your sister was
quite well.-

LYDIA
She is!

(Elizabeth pays no attention to the following

conversation, instead she is looking at Darcy who, in
turn, is staring at Wickham. They both obviously
recognize each other and look very uncomfortable.)

KITTY
when, then?

MR BINGLEY
As soon as as possible

LYDIA
Be sure to invite Mr Wickham.

(Darcy turns and rides off without a word.)

JANE
Lydia, you can't just say that -

MR BINGLEY
Will you excuse me ladies? Mr Wickham.
Enjoy the day.

(Elizabeth looks at Wickham, puzzled.)

(Everyone goes away, except for Lizzie and Wickham)

ELIZABETH
So tell me Mr. Wickham, it seems like you have deep hatred for Mr.
Darcy, why is that?

Wickham
Do you really want to hear it?

Elizabeth Nods

Wickham

My father managed his estate. We grew up together, Darcy and I. His

father treated me like a second son. Oh he was the kindest of men and
bequeathed me the best living in his gift, for I had my heart set on
joining the church. But when he died Darcy ignored his wishes and gave
the living to another man. He did those out of jealousy, for his
father loved me more than he loved him. And out of pride, for he
considered me too lowly to be worth his consideration.

Elizabeth
How cruel of him
(traces of dissapointment for Darcy and sympathy for Wickham on her
face)

INT. NETHERFIELD - HERTFORDSHIRE - BALL #2

(SOUND DIRECTOR CUE: PLAY “ANOTHER DANCE” ON LOW VOLUME)

BINGLEY
You're here! I'm so pleased.

JANE
And so am I.

BINGLEY
How are you, Miss Elizabeth?
Elizabeth is not paying attention, instead she is searching over Mr
Bingleys' shoulder for a sight of
Wickham.

BINGLEY
Are you, looking for someone?
ELIZABETH
No, no not at all.

Elizabeth walks away and is suprised to see Charlotte

ELIZABETH
Have you seen Mr Wickham.
(She shakes her head.)

CHARLOTTE
Perhaps he is in the ballroom.

(They both walk into the ball room. We pull back to reveal
a sea of dancers. Wickham is nowhere to be seen. Dissapointment can be
seen on her face.)

(Everyone is getting for the next dance, Elizabeth and Charlotte is on

one side when Mr. Darcy then appears to invite Lizzie for a dance)

DARCY
May I have the next dance, Miss Elizabeth.

(Elizabeth is stunned.)

ELIZABETH
You may.

(Darcy walks away.)

ELIZABETH
What was I thinking? Have I no presence of mind?

CHARLOTTE
I dare say you will find him very agreeable, Lizzie.

CUT TO:
(Elizabeth dances face to face with Darcy. Neither can speak. They
dance for a moment in silence.) (SOUND DIRECTOR CUE: PLAY “ANOTHER
DANCE” ON FULL VOLUME, STOP PLAYING WHEN THE DANCE ENDS)

INT. LONGBOURN - BREAKFAST

ELIZABETH
Mr. Collins had just arrived, He’s my father’s cousin whose to inherit
everything. He’s currently going to have dinner with us. He’s planning
to propose to one of us and - I think he got his eyes on me.

Everyone proceeds for the dinner

Mr. Collins
(nervous and like a robot)
These vegetables are perfectly cooked.

Mrs. Bennet
Mr Collins, we are perfectly able to keep a cook.

Mr. Collins
Uhm, can I have a word for Miss Elizabeth Bennet? For a private
matter.

Mrs. Bennet
Oh my, this is it. Girls! go to your rooms. Including you Mr. Bennet

(Mrs Bennet winks to Mr. Collins)

Elizabeth
Ma! Please don’t just leave me here, Pa!

(Everyone walks out except for Lizzie and Mr. Collins)

MR COLLINS
Dear Miss Elizabeth, you can hardly doubt
the purpose of this. Almost as soon as I entered the house, I know
you’re the right one. My object in coming to Longbourn was to choose
one among of Mr.Bennet’s daughter, for as you know I am to inherit the
estate and such an alliance will surely make amends for this.
(drops to his knee)
And that no reproach on the subject of
fortune will cross my lips once we are - married.

ELIZABETH
Sir, I am honoured by your proposal, but
regret I must decline it.
MR COLLINS
I know ladies have their pretty little
Ways, and don't seek to seem too eager -

ELIZABETH
Mr Collins, I am perfectly serious. You could not make me happy and
I'm convinced I'm the last woman in the world who could make you
happy.

MR COLLINS
So I must conclude that you simply seeknto increase my love by
suspense, according to the usual practice of elegant female-

ELIZABETH
Sir! I am not the sort of female to torment a respectable man. Please
understand me - I cannot accept you!

(Elizabeth walks out of the stage, towards the door)

(Everyone goes in again, Lydia and Kitty can be seen laughing while
Mrs Bennet is dissapointed. )

MRS BENNET
Mr Collins, has proposed to Lizzie. But she declined and now the danger
is Mr Collins may not have Lizzy.

MR BENNET
And what am I to do?

MRS BENNET
Speak to Lizzy.

(Mr and Mrs Bennet goes to Lizzie)

MRS BENNET
Tell her that you insist upon them marrying.

LIZZIE
Papa, please - I can't marry him!

MRS BENNET
You will have this house! You'll save your sisters from destitution!
Mr Bennet, say something!
MR BENNET
Lizzie, Your mother will never see you again if you do not marry Mr
Collins, and I wil never see you again if you do.

ELIZABETH
Thank you, papa.

(Mrs Bennet looks very dissapointed)

INT. LONGBOURN - ROOM

JANE
(reading letter) "Mr Darcy is impatient to see his sister and we are
scarcely less eager to meet her again. I really do not think Georgina
Darcy has her equal for beauty, elegance and accomplishments, so much
so I must hope to here after call her my sister. It is my duty to
indulge you in no hope in this respect for your own self."

ELIZABETH
Miss Bingley sees that her brother is in love with you and is gone
with him to persuade him otherwise.

JANE
But I know her to be incapable of wilfully deceiving anyone.

ELIZABETH
He loves you, Jane. Do not give up. Go to
our aunt and uncle's in London. There’s a chance you may see him there

EXT. ROSING PARK - PROPOSAL

ELIZABETH

After proposing to me, Mr Collins ask Charlotte to be his companion,

which she accepts, not for romance but for her to have her own home.
Charlotte invited me to her new home here in Hunsford, She told me
that she’s in a excellent condition being with Mr. Collins. And Mr.
Darcy, it turns out he’s the one who tried to seperate Jane and Mr.
Bingley. Saying that my sister is “unsuitable” for him!

(Elizabeth is walking around the park when she sees Mr. Darcy walking
towards her.)

DARCY
Miss Bennet, I can bear it no longer. I will set aside ,my family's
expectation, my rank and circumstance, all those things I love you.
Most ardently. Please do me the honour of accepting my hand.

ELIZABETH
Sir, I am very sorry to have caused you pain. Believe me, it was
unconsciously done.

DARCY
Are you rejecting me?

ELIZABETH
Think of it Mr Darcy, How can I accept your proposal when you were the
one who seperated my sister and Mr. Bingley!

DARCY
I do not deny that. I did it because I think Charles is more attached
to her than your sister is to him.

ELIZABETH
That’s because she’s shy! She hardly even show her real emotions to
me. Maybe it has something to do with the with his fortune.

Darcy
No, it has nothing to do with this. It’s the matter with your family.
It is the lack of propriety shown by your three sisters, yur mother
and sometimes, your father.

ELIZABETH
How about Mr. Wickham? What other excuses can you make about what you
did to him? All those misfortunes!

DARCY
Oh yes, his misfortunes have been very great indeed!

ELIZABETH
You have ruined his chances, and yet treat him with sarcasm?

DARCY
So this is your opinion of me! Thank you for explaining so fully.
Perhaps these offences might have been overlooked, if your pride had
not been hurt.

ELIZABETH
And those are the words of a gentleman? From the first moment I met
you, your arrogance, your selfishness, made me realize that you were
the last man in the world I would marry.

(AN AWKWARD PAUSE)

DARCY
Forgive me, madam, for taking up so much of your time.

INT. HUNSFORD

(Elizabeth standing, staring at a blank space. Darcy then arrives to

give a letter.)

DARCY
I came to leave you this.

(After Darcy dissapears, Elizabeth then read the letter)

(SOUND DIRECTOR CUE: PLAY “ DARCY”S LETTER” ON LOW VOLUME)

ELIZABETH
“As I said yesterday, it was right that I tried to seperate My friend
and your sister because if your family. And about Wickham, my father
provided for Mr. Wickham. And when he died, I recompensed him 3000
pounds, so that he could study law, but he gambled them all away. When
he asked for more i simply refused after learning about what he did.
Last summer, Mr Wickham came to announce her love for my sister,
Georgina, which is to inherit thirty thousand pounds. When I told him
he’s not going to get a dime when he marries her, he left her. She was
fifteen. As we shall never meet again, I wish you happiness in the
future”

INT. PEMBERLY

ELIZABETH
Uncle and Aunt Gardiner arrived on Longbourn, and they invited me to
go with them to breathe in some fresh air. We were on our way to the
Lake District but they instead restricted our trip Derbyshire. I only
agreed because they said Mr. Darcy is away and… I’m also curious.
Only though it turns out, he’s actually here with her sister,
Georgina.

(Elizabeth wanders aimlessly across, drawn by the music. She follows

the music round a corner. She sees Georgina Darcy, a beautiful fifteen
year old playing the piano with great passion and fluency. She is
moved by the music and listens. Darcy is beside Georgina ( SHANIA OR
GEORGINA PLAYS A BIT OF PIANO) Elizabeth is stunned to see him
there. Darcy glances up and sees Elizabeth watching him. For a moment
they both stare at each other frozen with surprise. Elizabeth turns
and runs. Darcy comes out after her.

DARCY
Ms Bennet!

ELIZABETH
I thought you were in London,

DARCY
I’m not, I came here a day early

ELIZABETH
I’m visiting Derbyshire with my Uncle and Aunt. I'm so sorry to
intrude. They said the house was open for visitors. I had no
Idea… Goodbye Mr. Darcy

INT. LONGBOURN

MRS. BENNET
Why did the Foresters let her out of their sight?
what am I going to do. Lydia has eloped with Mr. Wickham and they’re
nowhere to be found.

KITTY
A message has arrived! It is adressed to Papa, in Uncle’s writing

MR. BENNET
(getting the glasses) They found them, and they will marry if I agreed
to settle a hundred pounds a year for them.

ELIZABETH
And you are going to agree with this?

MR. BENNET
Of course I will. But there’s no man would marry Lydia for a hundred
pounds a year. I see, your uncle is very generous. Wickham's a fool if
he takes her for less than ten thousand pounds. I should be sorry to
think so ill of him in the very - beginning of our relationship.

JANE
Ten thousand!? Heaven forbid!

MRS BENNET
Lydia married! And at sixteen too! Ring the bell, Kitty! tell the
servants they will have a bowl of punch!

ELIZABETH
We should thank our uncle, Mama.

MRS BENNET
And so he should help! He's much richer than us, and he hasn't got any
children.

ELIZABETH
How can you talk like that?

MRS BENNET
A daughter, married!

ELIZABETH
Is that all you think about?

MRS BENNET
“Mrs Wickham" - how well it sounds

INT. LONGBOURN

ELIZABETH
All it turns out, Uncle Gardiner was not the one who payed Mr. Wickham
to marry Lydia. It was Mr. Darcy all along. Lydia has told me this and
told me not to tell anyone about it.

Lizzie goes to Mrs. Bennet and others

ELIZABETH
Have you heard the news, Mr Bingley is coming back to Netherfield

KITTY
He’s here! He’s at the door

MRS BENNET
Oh my goodness! Everybody act naturally.

Jane completely freezes. Everybody else goes into a fluster.

KITTY
He’s with someone… Is that Mr Darcy?

MRS BENNET
Mr Darcy indeed! The very insolence of him. What does he think of
coming here?

JANE
Ma!

MRS BENNET
Everyone sit down! Act naturally!

Darcy and Bingley enters the room

MRS BENNET
How very glad we are to see you, Mr Bingley! There are a great many
changes since you went away. One of my own daughters is married.

BINGLEY
(SMILES)I did hear of it, and offer my
congratulations.

ELIZABETH
Do you hope to stay long in the country Mr Bingley?

BINGLEY
Just a few weeks. For the shooting.

ELIZABETH
How are you, Mr Darcy?

DARCY
Quite well, thank you.

MRS BENNET
My Jane looks well, does she not?

BINGLEY
She does indeed. Well uhhm I know this is embarassing but, can I have
a word with Jane, alone?

MRS BENNET
Oh, Girls. Everybody to the kitchen immediately. Oh, Mr Bingley.
Everybody except the two leaves

(SOUND DIRECTOR CUE: PLAY “CANT SLOW DOWN” ON LOW VOLUME)

BINGLEY
Miss Bennet,I would like to ask you -

JANE
YES! A hundred times yes!

MRS BENNET (still not entering the room)

Thank the Lord for that. I thought it would never happen.

( SOUND DIRECTOR CUE: MUSIC FADE OUT, STOP PLAYING)

INT. LONGBOURN- NIGHT

A noise of someone banging the door can be heard

Elizabeth opens the door

ELIZABETH
Lady Catherine!

Lady Catherine comes in uninvited

LADY CATHERINE
And these are your daughters, I suppose.

MRS BENNET
All but one, the youngest has been lately married your ladyship. And
my eldest was only proposed to yesterday afternoon.

MR BENNET
Could I offer you a cup of tea?

LADY CATHERINE
Absolutely not! I must speak to Miss Elizabeth alone, immediately.

The Bennets all look at each other", bewildered by this strange turn
of events. Everyone except Elizabeth and Lady Catherine leaves.
LADY
Maybe you know why am I here, Miss Bennet. Let me be understood. Mr
Darcy is engaged to my daughter. This union has been Planned even
before they learned to talk. Do you think it can be prevented by
someone of inferior birth, of no importance in the World. Whose own
sister's elopement resulted in the scandalously patched-up marriage,
only achieved at the expense of your uncle? Heaven and earth! Now tell
me once and for all, are you engaged to Mr Darcy?

ELIZABETH
I am not.

LADY CATHERINE
And will you promise never to enter into
such an engagement?

ELIZABETH
I will not. And I certainly never shall. Allow me to say, the
arguments which you have supported this extraordinary application was
ill-judged. You have, insulted me in every possibleway and can now
have nothing to say. I must ask you to leave immediately. Good night.

LADY CATHERINE
I have never been thus treated in my entire life.
Lady Catherine storms past the family and out into the
night. Elizabeth is standing shaking with the excitement
of having stood so firmly up for herself.

MR BENNET
Lizzie, what on earth is going on?

ELIZABETH
Just a small misunderstanding.

She walks past them to bed.

EXT. COUNTRYSIDE

ELIZABETH
Mr Darcy!

DARCY
What are you doing out here so early?
ELIZABETH
I could not sleep.

DARCY
Me neither. I have been up.most of the night.

ELIZABETH
Mr Darcy, I must thank you for your generosity to both my sisters.I
know what kindnesses you have done for poor Lydia and Jane

(SOUND DIRECTOR CUE: PLAY “LIZ ON TOP OF THE WORLD” ON LOW VOLUME)

DARCY
I am alarmed that you know about those things. But you must know that
your happiness is what I think about. I also want to tell you one
thing. I don’t know if your feelings has change but mine did not. I
love you. And I want to ask you to marry me.

ELIZABETH

I am very happy to inform you that not only have my sentiments changed
there are no other words that can make me more happier.

Darcy and Elizabeth holds the hands of each other.

(SOUND DIRECTOR CUE: LET PLAY FOR A A BIT THEN FADE OUT)

INT. LONGBOURN

MRS BENNET
Mr Darcy?! What are you doing here

LIZZIE
Mr. Darcy came here to speak to papa.

Lizzie talks to Mr Bennet

MR. BENNET
Are you sure Lizzie? I thought you hated him? He sure is rich, but
does marrying him will make you happy? We know him as this proud and
unpleasent man but it does not matter if you really like him.
ELIZABETH
I sure do like him!I love him! He's not proud. It's I who's been
prejudiced, who didn't realize. If I told you what he's really like.
What he's done.

MR. BENNET
What has he done?

Elizabeth whispers to MR Bennet

Mr Bennet
I should pay him back.

ELIZABETH
No, you mustn't tell anyone! He wouldn't want it.

MR BENNET
You do love him, don't you?

ELIZABETH
Very much.

(SOUND DIRECTOR CUE: PLAY “END CREDITS” ON LOW VOLUME)

MR BENNET
Well then, I heartily give my consent.

ELIZABETH
Thank you papa!

Elizabeth goes out to tell Darcy.

(SOUND DIRECTOR CUE: PUT THE VOLUME UP A BIT)
Everyone then enters and bows
