Introductory Concept:

This lesson extends students’ visual understanding of circles by

introducing them to its mathematical definition. Definition of terms related to the
circle also developed.

Learning Skills from the MELCs:

Illustrates a circle and the terms related to it: radius, diameter, chord,
center, arc, central angle, and inscribed angle. (M7GE-IIIg1)

Activities:

CIRCLES

You can probably recognize circles even when you were young. When you
hear the word circle, round shapes may come to your mind. Now, we will
learn how circles are shaped this way.

A circle is the set of all points that are

the same distance from a fixed point. This fixed
point is called the center of the circle. A segment
drawn from any point on the circle to the center is
called a radius.

Note: A circle is named by its center. The circle at the

right is called Circle O.
What are the terms related to circle? Let us determine what do we call the points,
segments, lines, arcs and angles in and on the circle.

Illustration Description Definition

Point O is the center

Center is the fixed or
The name of the circle given point in the circle.
is Circle O or O. It is also used to name the
circle.

Radius is a segment
whose endpoints are the
OC the radius center and any point on the
circle. It is half of the
diameter.
The plural form of
radius is called radii.

Diameter is a segment
whose endpoints are any two
AB is the points on the circle and
diameter passes through the center.
It is also the longest
chord.

Chord is a segment
DC is the chord
whose endpoints are any
two points on the circle.

Tangent is a line that

X́ is the tangent Point C
touches the circle at exactly
is the one point called the point of
point of tangency tangency.

Secant is a line that

Ý is the secant intersects the circle at two
points.

Minor Arc is an arc

AC is a minor arc less than half a circle (less
than 180°).

Semi-circle is an arc
ACB is a semi- that measures half a circle
circle (exactly 180°).

Major Arc is an arc

ABE is a major more than half a circle
arc (more than 180°).

Central angle is an
COB is a central angle whose vertex is the
angle center of the circle and
sides are two radii.

Inscribed angle is an
EAF is an inscribed angle whose vertex is a
angle point on the circle and sides
are two chords.

Based on the table, the terms related to the circle are center, radius, diameter, chord,
tangent, secant, minor arc, semi-circle, major arc, inscribed angle, and central angle.
