TUBERCULOSIS AND GUILLAIN BARRE SYNDROME

Pulmonary tuberculosis causing Guillain-Barré has very few case reported.

Case report: An 23 year-old man with a history of pulmonary tuberculosis diagnosed 1 week
back and treated with antitubercular therapy presented with weakness of all four limbs. His
power was 4/5 in the upper limbs , 2/5 in lower limbs with global hyporeflexia. Imaging of brain
and spinal cord was normal. CSF analysis showed albumino-cytological dissociation . Nerve
conduction showed evidence of an axonal neuropathy. Diagnosis of Guillain-Barré syndrome
was made.

Outcome: He was treated with IVIG and improved. The diagnosis of Pott's spine in a patient with
tuberculosis is very common . Here we present a case of Guillain-Barre syndrome with a
reasonable temporal association with the onset of pulmonary tuberculosis suggesting a probable
relationship between the two. Some authors suggest that GBS can be resulted from direct
invasion of the nerve roots by tubercle bacilli.
