Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory

Module 1: Measurement

Check-in Activity 1

List all the lab apparatuses mentioned in the video and give their function and uses.
You may expand the table below. (20 pts)

Laboratory Apparatus Drawing/ Illustration Functions and uses

BEAKER Beakers are useful as a reaction
container or to hold liquid or solid
samples. They are also used to
catch liquids from titrations and
filtrates from filtering
operations.

TEST TUBE
Chemists frequently use test
tubes to hold, mix, or heat
small amounts of solid or
liquid chemicals, particularly for
qualitative experiments and
assay
GLASS STIRRING ROD
is a piece of laboratory
equipment made from pyrex and
is used to mix
chemicals and liquids for
laboratory purposes.

FLASK Flasks can be used to make

solutions as well as to hold,
contain, collect, or
sometimes volumetrically
measure chemicals, samples,
solutions, and so on for chemical
reactions or other processes
such as mixing, heating, cooling,
dissolving, precipitation, and
boiling for distillation .

THERMOMETER It accurately measures

temperature for applications
such as experiment
monitoring, instrument calibration
, materials testing, and
maintaining a sterile work
environment.
PIPETTE a slender tube attached to or
incorporating a bulb,
for transferring or measuring
out small quantities of liquid,
especially in a laboratory

WATCH GLASS A watch glass is a circular

concave piece of glass used in
chemistry as a surface
to evaporate a liquid, to weigh
solids, to heat a small amount of
substance, and to cover a beaker.

II. Answer in complete sentences

Compare and contrast a beaker and an Erlenmeyer flask discussing transfer of liquids,
boiling, mixing. (3pts)
Beaker and Erlenmeyer flask are both laboratory equipment used for pouring, mixing chemicals and both
can be heated diretclt on a hot plate because they both have flat surface but both are not used for
measurements. They key difference between the two is the shape, beaker has a cylindrical shaped
body while Erlenmeyed flask has a conical container.

Compare and contrast a beaker from graduated cylinder. (3 pts)

A graduated cylinder is along and slender vessel used for measuring the volumes of
liquid, though it is quite similar with the beaker, The two apparatuses are very different with each other
Each other because you cant use a graduated cylinder for heating, weighing, mixing and
Stirring just like what we do with the beaker, while the beaker has a wide mouth and flat bottom
It comes with a variety of sizes from one millimeter up to several times.

What lab apparatuses must be used together with the Bunsen burner to carry out
heating in the laboratory? (3 pts)
It is called a Sparker, It is used to light the bunsen burner for it to heat the samples from low to high
Heat, to slightly melt the glass tubes and also for sterilization.

Why is the stirring rod made up of glass and not of metal? (2 pts)
The reason is because the chemical that is being mixed by the rod might be a metal reacting
Chemical, and it might cause of the rod melting or in worse case, explode
