Lab - 2: Implementation of Single Line Diagram of Power Distribution
System
Objectives:
◼ Understanding MATLAB for circuit simulation.
◼ Formation of circuits with MATLAB
◼ Analysis of the circuit using MATLAB

Resources:
Pc installed with latest version of MATLAB.

Theory:
MATLAB (matrix laboratory) is a multi-paradigm numerical computing environment. A
proprietary programming language developed by Math Works, MATLAB allows matrix
manipulations, plotting of functions and data, implementation of algorithms, creation of user
interfaces, and interfacing with programs written in other languages, including C, C++, C#, Java,
Fortran and Python.
Although MATLAB is intended primarily for numerical computing, an optional toolbox uses the
Mu PAD symbolic engine, allowing access to symbolic computing abilities. An additional
package, Simulink, adds graphical multi-domain simulation and model-based design for dynamic
and embedded systems.

Simulink:
Simulink is a block diagram environment for multi domain simulation and Model-Based Design.
It supports simulation, automatic code generation, and continuous test and verification of
embedded systems.

Simulink provides a graphical editor, customizable block libraries, and solvers for modeling and
simulating dynamic systems. It is integrated with MATLAB, enabling you to incorporate
MATLAB algorithms into models and export simulation results to MATLAB for further analysis.

3-phase single line diagram:

This lab is performed to understand a single line diagram of 3-phase distribution system in which
we see that how voltages are step down and distributed to the system and what is the relation of
voltage and current on primary and secondary side. In this lab you’ll be able to know about the
transmission and distribution line.
Transmission Line:
Transmission lines are sets of wires, called conductors that carry electric power from
generating plants to the substations that deliver power to customers. At a generating plant,

32
electric power is “stepped up” to several thousand volts by a transformer and delivered to the
transmission line, it is a 11Kv line.

Distribution lines:
Electric power distribution is the final stage in the delivery of electric power; it carries
electricity from the transmission system to individual consumers to perform this operation we
use distribution lines these are connected to the distributed transformers.

Experiment:

Task:

Make the following Circuit in Simulink MATLAB and find the designated current and voltage of
primary and secondary side using scope.

Figure 2.1

NOTE: Always place the power-gui block in the top-level diagram for optimal performance and
make sure that the block uses the name power-gui.

33
While simulating a circuit in Matlab/Simulink with the help of sim power system toolbox, we
need to put the power-gui block. In the power-gui block we get the option of simulating the
circuit using continuous or discrete mode.

Procedure:
1. Open new model in Simulink and open Simulink library follow the same steps of Lab1.
2. Add power-gui block in a new model

Figure 2.2
3. Save this file to the new folder. Now, open Simulink library and go to Sim-scape > Sim-
Power-System>Specialized Technology>Fundamental Blocks> and choose
electrical sources.

Figure 2.3

Select AC voltage source and add it to a new model.

Figure 2.4

34
4. Go to elements in the Simulink library and select 3-phase series RLC branch and add it to a
new model.

Figure .5

5. Right click on 3-phase RLC branch and select RL

6. Add 3-phase source,4 3-phase transformer (2 windings), Three phase V/I measurement and
scope and ground.
7. The primary side of the 1st transformer and the secondary side of 4th transformer is Y-
connected except this all the transformers should be delta connected.
8. Set the properties of transformers as given on the next page
Properties of 1st transformer:

Figure 2.6

35
Winding 1 of a 1st transformer should be Y connected and winding 2 of a 1st transformer should
be Delta connected as shown in fig 3.6

Figure 2.7
Set the voltages on primary side 11kV & on secondary side 220KV. This is a step up transformer
Properties of 2nd Transformer:

Figure 2.8

36
Connect both the primary & secondary windings as Delta connected

Figure 2.9
The voltages at primary side should be 220Kv and on secondary side 33Kv this a step down
transformer. Now add another delta connected step down transformer which step downs the
voltages from 33Kv to 11Kv.
Properties of 4th Transformer:

Figure 2.10

37
Now in the last winding of the 4th transformer should be Delta and winding2 should be Y-
connected. It is a step down Delta-Y connected transformer.

Figure 2.11
Now set the parameters of 4th transformer according to diagram and now you can see that the
output of 4th transformer is 440 Volts. In this way 11Kv step down to 440 volts.
9. Add scope to measure 3-phase current and voltage on both primary and secondary sides of a
transformer.
Results:

Fig2.12

38
These are the 3-phase voltages at primary side in fig2.12.

Figure 2.13

This is a 3-phase current on primary side in fig 2.13.

Figure 2.14

39
These are the 3-phase voltages on secondary side in fig 2.14.

Figure 2.15

This is a 3-phase secondary current in fig 2.15.

Questions:
1. Describe single line diagram in power system?
2. Justify your answer why secondary winding of distribution transformer is connected in
Delta or Wye?

Learning outcomes:
▪ Able to Judge the different part of single line diagram on Matlab/Simulink
▪ Able to compare that voltages on primary sides are high but current is less.
▪ Able to compare that on secondary side voltages are less but current is high.
