ASSIGNMENT / ACTIVITY NO.5A

GAS LAW

PROBLEM SOLVING:
Instruction:
(a) Identify the law
(b) Write the derived formula
(c) Write the given, your computations, and encircle your final answer

1. Find the amount of oxygen in a container with an initial volume of 4.0 L. The initial pressure
of the contained gas is 1470 mm when at 250 C. If the pressure is changed to 750 mm,
what is the oxygen’s final volume if the temperature doesn’t change?

2. If a 1L balloon is flexible and can be expanded with increased temperature (from 200C to
450C), find the volume of the balloon after it is heated.

3. A pressurized (875 torr), at room temperature (250C) hair spray can (15 ounces) is heated
to 15000C in a house fire. Find the pressure inside the can before it explodes.

4. If a bicycle tire has a volume of 0.5 m3 at 200C and 1 atm, figure out the volume when taken
into the mountains where the pressure is 720 torr at a temperature of 140C.

5. A gas sample is observed to exert a pressure of 600 torr when confined to a 10.0 L vessel
at 270C. What will be its pressure in kPa when the gas is transferred to an 8.0 L vessel at
300 K?

6. A gas sample occupies a volume of 12.0 L at 250C and 750 torr. At what temperature in 0C
will the gas occupy a volume of 15.0 L at 750 torr?

7. A 6.2 liters of an ideal gas are contained at 3.0 atm and 37°C. How many moles of this gas
are present?

8. A sample of a gas at an initial volume of 8.33 L, an initial pressure of 1.82 atm, and an
initial temperature of 286 K, simultaneously changes its temperature to 355 K and its
volume to 5.72 L. What is the final pressure of the gas?

9. A 6.0 L sample, at 25°C, and 2.00 atm of pressure, contains 0.5 mole of a gas. If an
additional 0.25 mole of gas at the same pressure and temperature are added, what is the
final total volume of the gas?

10. A 20-liter cylinder contains 6 atmospheres (atm) of gas at 27 °C. What would the pressure
of the gas be if the gas was heated to 77°C?
