Type of DC-DC converters: PWM Converter

OVERVIEW

Pulse width modulation (PWM) is a technique of

encoding a voltage onto a fixed frequency carrier wave. PWM,
instead of varying the modulation frequency with voltage,
output is merely switched on and off at a fixed frequency so that
percentage of the on-time is proportionate to the signal voltage.
This can control the speed of a motor or the brightness of a
lamp. You can build your own circuit for it, but the build calls for
a bunch of discrete parts and some time and effort. Using a
readymade electronic module designed for that task is a
practical shortcut. the design of the module is based on three commonly available ICs and a handful
of other active and passive electronic components. Those key components are the NE555 IC, LM393
IC, AMS1117-5.0 IC, and an S8550 transistor.

The module has three PCB screw terminal block connectors for input and output connections
as follows:

VCC DC 12V-30V
GND Ground
PWM Positive of PWM input signal
GND Negative of input signal
VOUT Output Voltage 0-10V
GND Output Voltage Ground

Design Description:

the system converts 0-5V PWM signal input into 0-10V analog output. The entire system can be
powered from any 15-24V (>500mA) dc power supply, and there’s an onboard auxiliary 5V regulated
dc output for running external peripherals. The recommended (default) input pulse width
modulation frequency is 500Hz +/- 2%.

PWM is in fact a technique used to generate pseudo-analog signals. As it’s not truly analog, a low-
pass filter (LPF) is required to merely smooth the signal into the ‘average’ output voltage of the
PWM. In addition to the LPF, an Op-Amp with a gain of x2 is merged to raise the output voltage in 0-
10V scale. The (optional) second Op-Amp, a unity gain (x1) one, is added up as an output buffer.

Features:

1. MCU embedded technology

2. Easy to operate, fine-tuned by potentiometer

3. Select the PWM signal input level range through short-circuit

4. The module is smaller, easy to carry and use

APPLICATION

PWM is usually sent as square waves and is commonly used for power transfer, servo motor
control, and as a communication protocol. It can also be used to generate analog voltage by altering
the duty cycle accordingly to the desired value. A capacitor is then used to smooth the PWM
waveform.
