INDUSTRY PROFILE- Automobile Industry Of Pakistan

Pakistan's automobile industry is a dynamic sector of the economy of the nation and is
expanding. One of Pakistan's smallest but fastest-growing industries is the automobile sector,
which increased by 171% between 2014 and 2018. As of 2018, it contributed 3% to Pakistan's
GDP and employed about 3.5 million people. The 35th-largest auto producer is Pakistan. It
contributes roughly Rs.50 billion ($220 million) to the national treasury. One of Asia's smallest
yet fastest expanding auto markets is Pakistan. Despite the presence of certain multinational
corporations, local manufacturers and assemblers dominate the industry.
The creation of a few modest-sized assembly factories marked the beginning of the business in
the early 1950s. The business did not start to take off, nevertheless, until the 1980s, when a
number of significant assembly plants were built. Today, a variety of vehicles, including cars,
lorries, buses, and motorcycles, are produced in Pakistan. Many of the biggest producers and
assemblers are headquartered in Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad, where the industry is
concentrated. The main organization in Pakistan that represents the automobile industry is
called the Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA). It has 16 members,
including significant producers, assemblers, suppliers, and vendors.
Adam Revo, Pakistan's first locally produced vehicle, was released. However, the dollar
continued to decline following the 2008 elections, and as a result of poor leadership, many
automakers decided to halt manufacturing, with some leaving Pakistan. Toyota, Suzuki and

Honda currently hold a monopoly on the automotive industry. The second "Auto Policy 2016-
2021," which provides tax advantages to new automakers to set up production facilities in the
nation, was passed by Pakistan on March 19, 2016. In response, Nissan, SsangYong,
Volkswagen, Hyundai, Proton Holdings, and Kia have all shown an interest in penetrating the
Pakistani market. MG to bring electric vehicles to Pakistan, SAIC Motor's Morris Garages (MG)
Motor UK Limited and JW Automobile Pakistan have signed a memorandum of understanding
(MoU). Mercedes Benz and NLC inked a contract for the production of Benz Actros trucks in
Pakistan. No model update or auto safety requirements have been implemented in Pakistan.
Suzuki still offers the Bolan and Ravi, two vintage car models, for sale. Jolta Electric began
making electric motorcycles on July 8, 2021.
The sector has recently encountered a number of difficulties, including escalating import rivalry,
a lack of investment and knowledge in research and development, and a lack of competent
labor. However, the government has taken action to assist the sector, including building a
regulatory framework to support international investment and providing tax incentives for new
investment. In Pakistan, there is a lot of room for the automobile industry to expand, especially
when it comes to exports and spending on R&D.
