5 SOCIETAL ISSUES

1. Corruption
- Examples of corruption in the Philippines include graft, bribery, favoritism, nepotism, impunity,
embezzlement, extortion, racketeering, fraud, tax evasion, lack of transparency, lack of sufficient
enforcement of laws and government policies, and consistent lack of support for human rights.
2. Crime (homicide, robbery, rape)
- homicide is the killing of one person by another. Homicide is not a criminal charge in and of itself,
but rather a broad term that encompasses any scenario where one person causes another person's
death.
- the unlawful taking away of personal property from a person by violence or by the threat of violence
that causes fear: larceny from the person or immediate presence of another by violence or threat of
violence and with intent to steal.
- rape, unlawful sexual activity, most often involving sexual intercourse, against the will of the victim
through force or the threat of force or with an individual who is incapable of giving
legal consent because of minor status, mental illness, mental deficiency, intoxication,
unconsciousness, or deception. In many jurisdictions, the crime of rape has been subsumed under
that of sexual assault. Rape was long considered to be caused by unbridled sexual desire, but it is
now understood as a pathological assertion of power over a victim.
3. Drugs or substance abuse
- Illegal drug trafficking is the most prevalent illegal drug activity. In the Philippines, prevalent drugs
being smuggled and trafficked include heroin, marijuana, and methamphetamine
hydrochloride popular as shabu – the most preferred drug yet most expensive in the Philippines.
4. Immigration Stress
- The social problems of immigrants and migrants include 1) poverty, 2) acculturation, 3) education, 4)
housing, 5) employment, and 6) social functionality.
5. Racial Discrimination
- involves treating someone (an applicant or employee) unfavorably because he/she is of a certain
race or because of personal characteristics associated with race (such as hair texture, skin color, or
certain facial features).
