Ground Truth Report

As stated in the heading, from 22/06/2020 E.C to 25/06/2020 E.C we have seen jointly with
Amhara National Regional State Water, Irrigation and Energy Development Bureau (ANRS
WIEB) two small scale irrigation projects namely. dendewa and mechala. In the following
subsection we have to write down details of each projects ground truth comments suggestion and
its measures.

1. Dendewa Small Scale Irrigation Project

A. General Items
➢ Access road: -from kebele work mawecha to some extent of headwork and command area
have an access that is stripped by dozer. But the remaining accessibility of the headwork
is difficult that is, hilly and vertical to transport materials, manpower’s and other necessity.
So that we have taken a measure of Belt convers along the ridge using high thickness of
Geomembrane material.
➢ And also, the remaining accessibility of the command the same as to the head work, but it
has footpath/animal road following the ridge contour’s to command area, so that transport
materials, manpower’s and other necessity have been done using animal and the project
access road should be include its cost.
➢ Generally, even if the project access road cost should be seen in details as per described in
the above statement and revise its cost.
B. Headwork
➢ Headwork bed bar axis inclination should have to be modified that is aligned on the
workability ground and to trap the river minimum base flow to the intake.
➢ Increase the bed bar length with a minimum length of five meters to anchorage with right
bank of the river and fully trap the river minimum flow.
➢ Headwork upstream retaining wall should have to be concrete, since the river have
transport large boulders and to protect and stable the headwork retaining wall from damage
during high flood flow.
➢ Settling basin should have to be under cut, that is below ground level and provide concrete
cover slab, so that during flood flow the basin is not damage and higher size boulders are
not inter in it and it is safe for cleaning.

C. Infrastructure
➢ Main delivery HDPE pipe haven checked the setting out data around the headwork outlet
and command area. But there is difference of elevation between the design and actual
ground truth about 1m to 5m. So that we have taken a measure of resurveying the data with
cross checking the data that is surveyed before.
➢ Anchorage location/chainage on the drawing should be included
2. Mechala-2 Small Scale Irrigation Project
A. Headwork
➢ Mechal river at the headwork site is the border of Legehida wereda and Wereilu wereda,
the left side retaining wall is on the land of Wereilu wereda, so what measure was taken
to mitigate the conflict rises during constructions because the project planned to irrigate a
command area of located in the right side of the river, that is Legehida wereda.
➢ The route of head work right side protection wall is passed on the private property of
farmer, so what measure was taken to mitigate the conflict rises during constructions.
➢ Tail water depth at critical points of down stream of the headwork, like change of d/s
protection wall cross section, bend and end of the protection wall.
➢ The amount of base flow measured by consultant has been exaugurated, but during ground
truth it is 80l/sec, that means the period is non irrigation time and the water is not diverted
at the upstream of current headwork. Generally, the water balance should be rechecked
carefully.
➢ The driving head at the headwork outlet is lessthan the out let depth and it should be
checked.
B. Infrastructure
➢ As per the geological report approach canal and primary canals route from the headwork
almost 900m is lied on black cotton soil, so that the design should have to be take a
mitigation measure like back fill with selected material under the base of the canal and
should have to be include the cost and revise the BOQ.
➢ At approach canal chainage 00+120 meter there is a small gully, so that include the
necessary structure details and cost on BOQ.
➢ At approach canal chainage 00+390-meter need fill materials, and check the cut and fill
analysis at that chainage.
