OUTLINE

GAMING ADDICTION AMONG TEENAGERS :

CAUSES AND EFFECTS

INTRODUCTION

OPENING STATEMENT : Addiction to video games is just like any other type of addiction. Individuals
may suffer if they are away from their consoles or systems for an extended period of time.

GENERAL STATEMENTS :
• Video game creators are always seeking for strategies to increase player engagement, just like
everyone else trying to turn a profit.
• Increasing gaming priority to the point where gaming takes precedence over other life interests and
daily activities
• Family responsibilities and community involvement
• Gaming becomes the individual's dominant or even sole interest.

THESIS STATEMENT : This paper discusses the causes and effects of gaming addiction among
teenagers.

BODY
1. Causes & Effects 1
Cause : The video game content is intended to be addictive.
Effects :
• Inability to manage time
• The correlation between family relationships and brain activity within the reward circuit in
adolescents with Internet gaming disorder (Hwang et.al.,2020).

2. Causes & Effects 2

Cause : Using video games to escape or relieve stress
Effects :
• Pathological gamers rate their intelligence and gaming abilities positively but rate their
social competence in interpersonal interactions negatively (Wong IL, Lam MP. Gaming
behavior and addiction among Hong Kong adolescents. Asian J Gambl Issues Public
Health. 2016;6(1):6 ).
• Emotional suppression may be a big problem among gamers (Yen JY et al.,2017)
3. Causes & Effects 3
Cause : Obsessive video game playing
Effects :
• Overweight and obesity are unhealthy conditions. Impact of physical inactivity or
prolonged sitting during digital game play, including overweight, obesity, and
cardiovascular risk (Yin et al.,2020).
• The gamers are emotionally attached to the gaming group and feel obliged to keep playing
(Wong et al., 2016).
• One pathway through which problem gaming might be speculated to increase the
likelihood of suicidality is through increasing psychological distress and impulsivity which
in turn may increase the likelihood of suicidality (Krossbakken et al., 2018, Klonsky et al.,
2016, Şalvarlı and Griffiths, 2019).

CONCLUSION

RESTATE THESIS : In conclusion, gaming addiction can lead to a wide variety of negative consequences
through obsessive video game playing. If we let this become a lifestyle, we must be able to manage our live
so that it doesn’t disrupts family life and take over people’s lives and futures.

SUMMARY OF MAIN IDEAS : Although some teenagers develop symptoms of video game addiction
quickly, for the majority, the process is more gradual. Years of social video game play may be abruptly
ended by increased exposure to video games or a stressful life event.

COMMENTS/ SUGGESTIONS/ PREDICTIONS : Since gaming addiction has been officially

recognised by the World Health Organization as a mental health condition, set a time limits on how long
teenagers can play to prevent it from worsening. Parents can be helpful in steering teenagers away from
video games by helping them discover a complementary hobby.
