1. Introduction
Purpose of Geotechnical Instrumentation (from Slope Indicator)
Purpose of Geotechnical Instrumentation (from Slope Indicator)
1.1 Site Investigation Instruments are used to characterize initial site
conditions. Common parameters of interest in a site investigation are
pore-water pressure, permeability of the soil, and slope stability.

Measure pore
water pressure as a data or
parameter for design.
Purpose of Geotechnical Instrumentation (from Slope Indicator)
1.2 Design Verification Instruments are used to verify design
assumptions and to check that performance is as predicted. Instrument
data from the initial phase of a project may reveal the need (or the
opportunity) to modify the design in later phases.

Measure d-wall movement during excavation Measure load distribution in pile test by
by Inclinometer vs prediction. strain gauge, can compare skin friction
between measured vs calculation.
Not design Sky swimming pool at the
beginning. After booming of swimming
pool --> owner want to have it.
Measured results, used for verify/compare
with the structural analysis result.
By Reading after construction of concrete
floor, wall, 50% water level, 100% water level
If measured results larger than predict, then
the correction plan can be perform.

RESULT EXAMPLE
Purpose of Geotechnical Instrumentation (from Slope Indicator)
1.3 Construction Control Instruments are used to monitor the effects
of construction. Instrument data can help the engineer determine how
fast construction can proceed without the risk of failure.

Typically, pause the fill for waiting the

pore water dissipate -> get more FS ->
can fill more layer.

Measure pore water pressure in clay (below

embankment) by piezometer->for calculate
stability, if FS is OK then can fill more layer.
Purpose of Geotechnical Instrumentation (from Slope Indicator)
1.4 Quality Control Instrumentation can be used both to enforce the
quality of workmanship on a project and to document that work was
done to specifications.

Worker tighten many bolt

after alert.

Results of pile wall movement during excavation by Inclinometer

Measurement result > prediction.
Alert to recheck workmanship or QC of bracing system.
Consult can use Instruments data to QC the contractor or Main Contractor can QC the subcontractor.
Purpose of Geotechnical Instrumentation (from Slope Indicator)
1.5 Safety Instruments can provide early warning of impending failures,
allowing time for safe evacuation of the area and time to implement
remedial action. Safety monitoring requires quick retrieval, processing,
and presentation of data, so that decisions can be made promptly.

Purpose of Geotechnical Instrumentation (from Slope Indicator)
1.6 Legal Protection Instrument data can provide evidence for a legal
defense of designers and contractors should owners of adjacent
properties claim that construction has caused damage.

Monitoring data as an information for legal defense ie. Data for evaluate the
stability of building or data for continue the construction work.
Purpose of Geotechnical Instrumentation (from Slope Indicator)
1.7 Performance Instruments are used to monitor the in-service
performance of a structure. For example, monitoring parameters such
as leakage, pore-water pressure, and deformation can provide an
indication of the performance of a dam. Monitoring loads on tiebacks or
rock bolts and movements within a slope can provide an indication of
the performance of a drainage system installed in a stabilized slope.

2.18 Real-time Instruments (Datalogger)

Introduction
A data logger, is an electronic instrument that records
measurements at set intervals over a period of time.

Objectives
• unattended to measure and record information for the
Fig.1 Campbell scientific Data logger
duration of the monitoring period
• ability to automatically collect data on a 24-hour basis
• ability to send data automatically to server via GSM
modem.
• measure and record of many type of sensor such as
electrical resistance strain gauge, Vibrating wire strain
gauge, Load cell, accelerometer sensor, Piezometer,
Tilt sensor, thermocouple, potentiometer sensor and
etc.
