As you can see the present simple tense has special characteristics .
- We have to use the auxiliary verb do/does to ask questions, to say no, to make
short answers and sometimes to emphasize.
- In the affirmative mode we only use one verb, the main one, that’s why is
“simple”, no auxiliaries.
- We normally do not use or mix other verbs and the verb to be in the present
simple, so do not write sentences like “I am watch the TV,” cause that’s
incorrect!
- Be careful when you use the auxiliary do/does in questions and negatives the
main verb remains in its simple or base or infinitive form, It is not conjugated,
what you need to conjugate in these cases is the auxiliary verb.
She does not play soccer. We do not say She does not plays soccer, that’s
incorrect!
As you can observe, the simple tense has a different conjugation for the 3rd, persons
singular: HE, SHE, IT. We add an S at the end of the verb to show that we are
talking about these persons.
With these persons we use the auxiliary verb DOES.
Spelling Rules for adding S.
- Normally we just add an S, like in speaks, eats, runs, loves, plays.
- We add ES when the verbs end in SS, SH, CH, X,O, like in kisses, washes,
watches, fixes, goes and does.
- When the Word ends in a Y that is preceded by a consonant we change the Y by I
and add es, like in study> studies.
So, I study English, Do I study English? I do not study English.
But, She studies English, Does she study English? She does not study English.
Be careful the S at the end of the verb does not mean plural but the contrary singular.
CONTRACTIONS.

In the Present Simple tense We use the

contractions with the auxiliary in the negative
mode: do not >don’t does not>doesn’t.
