Douglass and Lincoln

This is Abraham Lincoln, 16th U.S. President (on the left). This is Frederick Douglass,
the famous abolitionist (on the right).
President Abraham Lincoln did not allow black men to be in the military. This
upset Frederick Douglass. Later, Abraham Lincoln let black men be in the military.
Douglass’ job was to gather people to join the military, but he stopped because
the black soldiers were treated poorly like slaves.

Douglass was a slave but then he met with the President of the United States
because he was upset about these soldiers’ treatment. Lincoln knew who
Frederick Douglass was. They agreed on some things and disagreed on other
things. After they talked, Douglass gathered men for the military again. Douglass
thought Lincoln would make him an officer of the military, but he did not.
