Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners, can
continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.
Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-step as
you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.
Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM. This
will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you need to ask your
facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the lesson. At the end
of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check your learning. Answer
keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that you will be honest in using
these.
In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also provided to
our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can best help you
on your home-based learning.
Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of this
SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and tests. And read
the instructions carefully before performing each task.
If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the tasks in
this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

Thank you.

What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you master
the natural resources
The scope of this module permits it to be used in many different learning
situations. The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The
lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. But the order in which
you read them can be changed to correspond with the textbook you are now using.
The learners demonstrate understanding on use of scientific information and skills to
make informed decisions about themselves and the environment in which they live.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

cite and explain ways of using Earth’s resources sustainably.

Specifically after going through this module you are able to:

1. differentiate renewable from nonrenewable resources;

2. classify the different resources; and
3. enumerate the different sources of energy.

What I Know

Directions: Read and analyze the given questions below: Choose the letter of the correct
answer. Write your choice on a separate sheet of paper.
1. What is a natural resource?
a. Something you do for a living. c. It is a summer camp.
b. Something found in nature that people use. d. It is a way to cook camp
food.
2. Which one is an example of a renewable resource?
a. copper c. sunlight
b. coal d. iron
3. Which is an example of an energy resource?
a. salt c. natural gases
b. lime stone d. rock

5
4. Which is an example of a nonrenewable resource?
a. gold c. water
b. tress d. wind

5. Which is a way that we can protect our environment?

a. litter c. pollute
b. recycle d. contaminate
6. Where do things like vegetables, copper, and water come from?
a. the air c. the sun
b. space d. the environment
7. The process of using resources wisely is called?
a. overuse c. sustainability
b. pollution d. burning
8. Things we take from the environment and use are called:
a. rocks c. natural resources
b. pollutants d. energy
9. Which natural resources are essential for living?
a. soda and chips c. football and tv
b. cars and trains d. air and water
10. What type of natural resource can be replaced or replenished?
a. zero resources c. nonrenewable resources
b. everything d. renewable resources

What’s In

Natural resources are everything that is provided for us by nature. They are not
made by man. They can either be renewable or non-renewable. We call it a
renewable resource if it grows again or comes back after we use it.
Renewable resources are replenished naturally and over relatively short periods
of time. Renewable resources are solar energy, wind energy, geothermal energy,
biofuels, cultivated plants, biomass, air, water and soil.
Nonrenewable energy resources, like coal, nuclear, oil, and natural gas, are
available in limited supplies. This is usually due to the long time it takes for them to
be replenished.

6
What’s New

Directions: Classify the list of resources inside the box below as Renewable Resources and
Non – Renewable Resources. Copy the table below. Write your answer in your
answer sheet.

Soil water coal natural gas petroleum

nuclear energy solar energy biomass geothermal
lumber

Renewable Resources Non – Renewable Resources

What Is It

Types of Sources of Energy

These can be broken down into renewable and non-renewable energy sources.
Renewable Energy Source
- A renewable source is any natural resource that can replace it quickly and
dependably. These energy sources are plentiful, sustainable, naturally
replenished and good to the environment. The major types or sources of
renewable energy are:
• Solar energy from the sun
• Wind energy
• Geothermal energy from the heat inside the earth
• Hydropower from flowing water

7
• Ocean energy in the form of wave, tidal, current energy and ocean
thermal energy
• Biomass from plants

Non- Renewable Energy Source

- A non-renewable energy source is a source with a limited supply that we

can mine or extract from the earth, and it’ll eventually run out.
- These are formed over thousands of years from the buried remains of
ancient sea plants and animals that lived millions of years ago. Most of
these energy sources are “dirty” fossil fuels, which are generally bad for
the environment.
- The major types or source of non-renewable energy are:
• Petroleum
• Hydrocarbon gas liquids
• Natural gas
• Coal
• Nuclear energy

Different Sources of Energy

Solar Energy Wind Energy

Geothermal Energy Hydrogen Energy

8
Tidal Energy Wave Energy

Hydroelectric Energy Biomass Energy

Nuclear Power Fossil Fuel (Coal, Oil and Natural Gas)
