(Ans.)
JOINTS
- part of the body where two or more bones meet to allow movement

BONES
- any of the pieces of hard whitish tissue making up the skeleton in
humans and other vertebrates

- work with muscles and joints to hold our body together and support
freedom of movement

TENDONS
- is a fibrous connective tissue that attaches muscle to bone
- may also attach muscles to structures
- serves to move the bone or structure

LIGAMENTS
- are made of very thick and elastic material, making them tough and can
stretch when the bones move
- is a fibrous connective tissue that attaches bone to bone
B. Motivation Look at the picture. What body system is shown? (Ans: Human Skeletal

Ask: What composes the human skeletal system?
(Ans. Skeletal System- bones, cartilage, ligaments, tendons, muscles
connective tissues

Ask: What is the role of the human skeletal system in our body?
(Ans. The Human Skeletal System gives the body structural support
and shape. It holds the body as one and allows it to move.

C. Activity Activity 1.1: Four Pics, One Word

Instructions: Guess the word by studying how the four pictures are related to
each other.

Questions:
Ask: How are the four (4) pictures related to each other? What are
these all about? (Ans.) skeleton

Group Activity: Group pupils into four (4) groups. Let each member observe and
act the given activity. Have a discussion of all the members after performing the
activity to fill in the answer on the given table.

Activity 1.2 Observing Movements of Joints

Science Skills: Observing, Identifying

Problem: What are the different kinds of joints?

What you need:
Own joints in the body
What you need to do:
1. Try to move the different parts of the body by moving it back and forth,
side to side, rotating, and swinging.
2. Fill out the Observation Table below.

Body Parts Movement

neck
lower arm
upper arm
wrist
Shoulders and hips
skull

What have you found out?

1. Which part of the body allows movement? ________________
2. What makes the most of the body parts move? ______________
3. How does the movement of the shoulders differ from the movement of
the arms? _________________

D. Analysis Let each group present their output. Discuss their answers.
Why can you move your body in different directions? (Ans: Because of
your joints. Remember a joint is formed where two bones meet. Each
joint is designed for a specific movement.)

E. Abstraction  The skeletal system consists of the bones of the body. It is

made up of skeleton, muscles, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, joints and
nerves. It gives the body structural support and shape. It holds the body
as one and allows it to move.

Parts Description / Function(s)
1.Bones Protect the delicate organs of the body and provides support and
aids in body movements.
2. Joints Formed between two bones. It allows you to bend your knees,
twist your arms, nod your head, and do other movements.
3.Cartilage Fibrous tissues that coated the end part of the bones. Acts as
cushion between two bones and helps the joints move.
4.Ligaments Made of very thick and elastic materials that allows bones not to
separate even if they do a lot of movement.
5.Tendons Are made of tough materials that connect muscle to a bone.

Types of bones
The bones are categorized in two: axial skeleton which protects the
delicate organs of the body such as the skull, backbone, breastbone, and
the ribs; appendicular skeleton which provides support and aids the
body in movement such as collar bones, shoulder blades, and the bones
of the arms, legs, and hips.

In your different activities you found out that the bones are important
parts of the body. A healthful and hazard- free environment is important
for the care of the skeletal system. This is essential to prevent falls and
other accidents that could injure the bones. Proper exercise and nutrition
also keep the skeletal system healthy.

E. Application Directions: Match the parts of the organ system in column A to each
function in column B. Write only the letter of the correct answer.

A B
____1. cartilage a. made of very thick and elastic
materials that allows bones not to
separate even they do a lot of
movements

____2. tendons b. provides shape and support, as

well as protection for some organs

____3. bones c. made of tough materials that

connect muscle to bone

____4. joints d. acts as cushion between two

bones and helps the joints move

____5. ligaments e. formed between two bones and

allow to bend your knees and twist
your arms

F. Practical What do you feel when you press gently the sides of your wrist and top of
Applications of your head? How do you feel the bones on your arms and legs? How are

Concepts and they different or alike from the bones of your head using size and shape?
Skills in Daily
Living (Ans. Feel hard. Bones in some parts of our body have different sizes
and shape.)
G. Generalization What are the parts and functions of the skeletal system?
How do the parts of the skeletal system work together?
( Ans; Parts of the skeletal system are: bones and connective tissues
including cartilage, joints, tendons and ligaments.
(Ans: Function: The skeletal system gives the body structural support
and shape. It holds the body as one and allows it to move.

H. Assessment/ Directions:
Evaluation A. Multiple Choice: Choose the letter of the correct answer and write it in your
paper.
1. Which among the body system provides form, support, stability, and
movement in the body?
A. Circulatory System C. Nervous System
B. Digestive System D. Skeletal System

2. What is the characteristic of ligaments?

A. Can connect the ends of muscles to the bones.
B. Can able the bones to move freely in all directions.
C. Can stretch to facilitate the movement of the bones.
D. The ends are covered with an oil-like fluid that acts as lubrication.

3. Why can you move your body in different directions?

A. It is because of your skin.
B. It is because of your joints.
C. It is because of your lungs.
D. It is because of your intestine.

4.What is the function of the axial skeleton? It _____________

A. It acts as a shock absorber.
B. It aids in the movement of the body
C. It connects the muscles to the skeleton.
D. It protect the delicate organs of the body.

5. Which of the following components of the skeletal system holds two bones
